Searched and couldn't find it. Looking for stuff like Rime of the Ancient Mariner or Hearts Alive or At War With Satan. Awesome is more important than long, but primary attributes should be metal and epic!

(I took a run with the search engine, but couldn't find anything; I find it hard to believe there's not already a thread for this.)

that 20+ minute enslaved song 'bout vikings. "slaget om lindisfarne" or something.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Monday, 14 May 2007 09:21 (eighteen years ago)

"Halloween", by Helloween. Arguably even more thrilling an epic than "Mariner". Others might try to tell you to go with "Keeper of the Seven Keys" instead, but they're wrong.

The classic Manowar and Bathory albums are chock full of epics, one tip per record:

Manowar - Battle Hymn (from "Battle Hymns")
Manowar - Gates of Valhalla (from "Into Glory Ride")
Manowar - Bridge of Death (from "Hail To England")
Manowar - Thor (The Powerhead) (from "Sign of the Hammer")

Bathory - Blood Fire Death (from "Blood Fire Death")
Bathory - Song to hall up high/Home of once brave (from "Hammerheart")
Bathory - Blood and Iron (from "Twilight of the Gods")
Bathory - The Lake (from "Blood on Ice")

"White Cluster", by Opeth.

And hell, for something more current, "Clutching the Fists of Dissent", from the shockingly good new Machine Head album.

On a slightly mellower note, there's "Travel", by the Gathering.

A. Begrand, Monday, 14 May 2007 10:00 (eighteen years ago)

ulver - hymn 1

and it's only 6:16 long

also check:

emperor - with strength i burn
my dying bride - the return to the beautiful
my dying bride - the crown of sympathy
katatonia - brave

good call with 'white cluster', but anything from still life fits the bill. it's a pretty damn fantastic record.

"to cross the bridge" by high on fire. i never get tired of this one - it sounds like armies approaching, despite the fact that des only uses one tom live. witness:

Get the new Moonsorrow album. 2 songs. Almost 60 minutes total. Totally epic Viking metal. I love it.

"neogenesis" by enslaved is awesome and epic. it's on isa. and one of the epickest, if not the most epic awesome metal song is "crimson" by edge of sanity

has to be heard to be believed

Dopesmoker - Sleep

EZ Snappin, Monday, 14 May 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

Dopesmoker is long, but I don't know if I would call it epic. It's just sort of repetitive and lumbering (which isn't to say it isn't good).

Jeff Treppel, Monday, 14 May 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

Opeth make me wish for death (and not in a good, epic, viking-slaying-a-peasant kind of way).

I'm gonna say Maudie Snook (about a dessicated old woman who just won't die and scares the shit out of everyone) or QuietBabiesAstrayInaManger (it sounds like they're landing a helicopter with synths before the bass line rumbles in!) by Danava

Pretty much everything on Ride The Lightning, Rainbow 'Rising,' etc etc blah blah blah...

Andi Mags, Monday, 14 May 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

Also, first track on Flower Travellin' Band's Satori.

Andi Mags, Monday, 14 May 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

"Sign of the Southern Cross" - Black Sabbath

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 14 May 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

Judas Priest - Blood Red Skies, One Shot at Glory, Out in the Cold, etc.

Jeff Treppel, Monday, 14 May 2007 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

Manilla Road!! "Dreams of Eschaton / Epilogue" is one of the long ones with some memorable lines.

Before the Gods of Hell sentence you to die
Remember well, my friend, a warlord never cries

But "Flaming Metal System" is probably my favorite and definitely the most epic song under 6 minutes.

xox, Monday, 14 May 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

If I were to pick a definitive Priest epic, it'd be "Beyond the Realm of Death".

A. Begrand, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, knew I was forgetting something important. I guess I would also be remiss if I didn't mention Metallica's "One" and "Fade to Black."

Jeff Treppel, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

Savatage, "Gutter Ballet"

gabbneb, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, Savatage did some great epics.

I can't believe I forgot to mention Mercyful Fate's "A Dangerous Meeting". Most folks would probably plug stuff like "Satan's Fall" or "Come to the Sabbath", but "Meeting" packs so much into, what, four or five minutes, it's unreal.

Emperor's "Inno a Satana" is another great short epic.

A. Begrand, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

when i was in elementary school, I wrote a paper on Alexander the Great, which used quotes from the Iron Maiden song of the same name.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

haha early sign that something's wrong w/this kid....

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

Black Sabbath - Wheels of Confusion

earlnash, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

Number one Savatage epic is "Chance," no question.

Jeff Treppel, Monday, 14 May 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

Type O Negative - Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity

(Sorry, I could go on for pages with these)

MESHUGGAH - I

The Macallan 18 Year, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

Anything by Dragonforce.
Anything by Cellador.

"Crimson King" by Demons & Wizards.

novaheat, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

Can't forget the king of epic: Dio. I know someone mentioned Rainbow Rising above, but I think these are the best Dio epics:

Rainbow - the Gates of Babylon
Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
Dio - Egypt (the Chains Are on)

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

NEUROSIS - FROM THE HILL

oh, and The Mars Volta - Tetragrammaton, if you don't consider that cheating.

Just got offed, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

CREEPING DEEEEAAAAATH

John Splith, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

Isis - Backlit
Opeth - The Drapery Falls
The Wildhearts - Sky Babies

oh dear, you can tell I'm not a true metaller, more an INDIE INFILTRATOR :(

Just got offed, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

IMPOSTER! Unleash the wolves!

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 23:21 (eighteen years ago)

OMG that's it! Wolves! Ulver!

Ulver - Dressed In Black (I know it isn't REALLY metal, or epic, but STILL)

Just got offed, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

MESHUGGAH - I

Machine Head has a pretty epic song (kind of) about wolves on the aforementioned new record, appropriately called "Wolves."

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 03:06 (eighteen years ago)

Lykathea Aflame belong in here, but not sure which particular song. Elvenefris is entirely epic.
