DJ Quik is probably the producer i've listened to the most for the past year and a half, and i kind of love bits of everything. What I love about his sound is how clean it is - he has a real obsessive musician's approach, I think, which appeals to me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmkLgX5XsHw

^^^Thats from his 'new' group The Fixxers which isn't really new cuz its just him and AMG who have been recording together for a long long time.

From his early shit, his first album 'Quik is the Name,' the "Tonite" single, etc are kind of incredible and his first album went plat.

His work with 2nd II None is also some real solid early production work, classic party shit.

His next couple albums are good, and "Safe and Sound" was produced by Suge Knight, but his big step to greatness was circa Rhythmalism where he stepped smoothly into a modern production style, jettisoned the samples and recorded a straight up brilliant party record that sounds like it hasn't aged a day. "We Still Party" is my current ringtone. "So Many Ways," "Thinkin Bout U," reggae on "Bombudd," "El's Interlude" (omg what i wouldn't do for an all-Quik produced El Debarge album, this is the closest you'll get to hip-hop marvin gaye outside of Erick Sermon's "Music").

His albums after are good too and basically follow in this vein - "Trauma" from '05 was one of my favorite rap records, love the tribute to Roger Troutman and "Fandango" with B-Real is brilliant.

I kind of wish Quik would release an entire album in the vein of "Quik's Groove"'s.

There's also his production work, for Pac, for 8ball and MJG ("Buck Bounce" love 4-eva), jada, etc. But his best guest work tended to be for his friends.

Suga Free benefits the most, probably; his album from last year was alright but minus Quik it just wasn't the same magic. Suga Free's first too albums are hot, plus his features with Quik are pretty solid (I recommend both of the "Suga Free: The Features" albums, esp. for "Inside Out" and "Let's Get Together" (pretty sure those are both Quik, no credits on the liners tho)

His dude Mausberg, who was shot around the recording of "Under the Influence," is not really my favorite rapper but Quik occasionally has some nice production work with him and Quik's tribute song to him is powerful stuff. Hi-C's records are alright. I tend to listen to these more for the production than the rapping.

deej, Monday, 14 May 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

should say "safe and sound was EXECUTIVE produced by suge knight"

deej, Monday, 14 May 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

If you troll around places like Tower and coconuts or just browsing the internet you'll find random comps of Quik-produced records and one-offs with his crew - AMG, Hi-C, Suga Free, Mausberg, etc

I forgot to mention the Penthouse Players Clique! thats some classic old school Quik too

How's this for hot - his single for Tony Toni Tone where they're interpolating nirvana on the hook!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=CyF4sJ-pNJQ

deej, Monday, 14 May 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

he's really such a great party producer, lyrics are never dumbed down, and he evolved in a way that didn't sacrifice his strong suit - like "Tonite" drops when he's 21 and all he wants to do is grab a 40 and get drunk tonight, but by rhythmalism he's adapted to growing up w/ grace - "We still party, we get high/ sometimes we don't feel grown-up and that's no lie." Its like what Vahid was talking about in the beardo thread, about how the music's developed as he's transitioned from early 20s' rave music to hipster club house.

I still haven't heard the first two Hi-C albums ('skanless' and 'swingin') but i've been meaning to, if i can ever find them. maybe i should defend "Hi Life Hustle" more than just saying i just listen to the beats - he's a pretty good rapper

deej, Monday, 14 May 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

rolling 2007 deej thread

deej, Monday, 14 May 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

deej i like most of your assessment but glossing over Way 2 Fonky is a no-no. Jus Lyke Compton bitch! Not to mention maybe the best quik's groove and a bunch of nasty ass shit. He kind of deferred to the 2nd II None ethos over a lot of it(they were already broken by then iirc?) but his beats are all on point pre-Chronic wild hard funk hooks, love that style but it didn't get much of a heyday before g-funk came in.
u also forgot that one single by Juvenile Committee, though the rest of that album was butt-acious.

tremendoid, Monday, 14 May 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

skanless is a must hear. hi-c is like, ignorantly ignorant when it comes to women and his flow comes and goes(i should say his flow always fits his voice, he had the eazy style 'pleasant scream' going on that could be off-putting) but the beats are almost all dynamite with a couple of duds. Got a classic quik-stable posse cut too. Haven't heard his recent stuff.

tremendoid, Monday, 14 May 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

i dont know why i thought skanless was hard to find, amazon's got it for 10 bucks

i agree about way 2 fonky! - its great too. was that the one that chris rock put in his list, or was that safe + sound?

deej, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

yes, chris rock put way 2 fonky on his list.

as far as AMG, i know 'bitch betta have my money' is considered a classic but i had trouble getting into it when i first checked it out

deej, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

Listening to the 'Quik's Groove II' off way 2 fonky right now, i really wish he'd release a dj shadow/rjd2 style instrumental album like this. Good lord, perfect summer weather music.

deej, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, I'd never connected the dots between "Let's Get Down" & "Smells Like Teen Spirit", probably because I never heard the later 'til well aftfer the fact. Interesting. I absolutely love "Lets Get Down".

The live album is really good. I wouldn't quite put it above Jay-Z Unplugged, but its pretty damn close. But that's the only Quik thing I have. What would you advise for a second Quik purchase?

The Reverend, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

I always loved his song in bust a groove.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 02:46 (eighteen years ago)

Ha deej I almost understand why you mentioned beardo but the Quick I've heard always makes me think of Masters of Work more - relaxed svelte disco. Although actually it's more commercial than that. Like, that "Break Bread" song. He should have produced Will Smith - or did he?

I hadn't heard "Hand In Hand", thanks for posting that.

Tim F, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 06:23 (eighteen years ago)

i have nothing to contribute to this thread except that this new conversational turn towards talking about grownup relaxed svelte disco makes me think of snoop ft nate dogg "crazy", which i was kicking back to today and thinking about how it would totally sound great if they did a remix with peabo bryson and grover washington jr. then i listened to some madlib.

"Chromski A.K. Gattlington"?? ELLI$?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 06:43 (eighteen years ago)

also the mobile DJs that spin in the quad fridays during lunch play "can u werk that" almost as much as they play the pack.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 06:47 (eighteen years ago)

i'm coming around on can u werk that, i'd like to know what rtc was gonna complain about now! its def a song that gets better when hammered thru repetition.

Tim, I think you'd really like the Rhythmalism album if you haven't heard it.

yeah i mean beardo only mentioned cuz that was the context in which moonship was talking about grown folks disco. a similar point of comparison, more locally for me, would be steppin. Sort of the grown 'n' sexy dance music vs. the kids ghetto house/ rap music.

but yeah MAW is an interesting comparison point actually, except i hear more INTENT in MAW's disco to be 'taking it wayyyy back.'

I was talking about this in some other thread, how i wish dudes would make more dance/hip-hop blends - ethan started talking about the blade 2 soundtrack as usual but i'm thinking more like a lot of what Quik does - beats up in the 112 bmp area, rappers who sound comfortable over what is essentially house music.

Tim have you heard Suga Free's "Pimpin in the Year 3000"?

I finally copped Skanless, the Hi-C album, and yeah tremendoid was right its pretty amazing...I like old school Hi-C way more than the modern incarnation, the Eazy E comparison is on point.

deej, Sunday, 20 May 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

to elaborate on the dance/hip-hop blends comment - it seems like a lot of the 'real dance' dudes are 'real rap'-phobic, passing on a lot of great shit that would probably fit really well in dance sets; the only way you can hear something vaguely combining the two is trashy post-hollertronix djs who just mash up, like, justice and lil jon

deej, Sunday, 20 May 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

ha yeah, i'm still whatevs about it but as soon as i wrote that i did think to myself "bet this'll turn out to be one of those underwhelming nothing tunes that'll rule the world in 6 months" a la jim jones or mims etc, and then vahid only made me surer.

saying that tho, in terms of those kinda tunes you only get a feel of that sort of intoxicating social energy in a v shitty fake 2nd hand way in england, if at all, and i'm not about to wear out the mp3 play button desperately failing to recreate that. ldn has enough dsouth hipster dickheads bumping gucci mane or whatever as it is.

anyway fucking hell man if it says quik on the record i'm expecting to hear quik! someone else can be the fixxers.

^^^^^ this is a really good post

and what, Sunday, 20 May 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

the story behind 'werk that':

What do you feel is wrong with music?

QUIK: Right now I think it's just away from the growth of music. It sounds like it's snatch and grab. Coming up with a ]catchy hook and an 808 beat and people keep doing the same thing over and over and over again. And that's OK.

deej, Sunday, 20 May 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

that is a terrific quote. haha like, not insomuch as it makes a great case for anything, but just the peaceful quikian zen generousness of it either way!! ilx 3.0 should totally force all posts to have "and that's ok" at the end of them.

you know who else deserves a thread like this? fucking DJ BATTLECAT. it only recently occured to me that i don't think i ever heard a battlecat beat i didnt enjoy, yet how comes i never felt that need to really spend time really thinking about him?? or is that just me?

r|t|c, Sunday, 20 May 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, sometimes I listen to current hip house revivalism - "Touch Your Toes" or whatever - and wonder why its supporters don't just listen to uptempo hip hop and R&B (Mya's "Free" alone is a better urban/dance fusion than anything else any of us listened to this week). But kudos to Van Helden I guess for not using a corny rapper.

That said (incl. the bit about corniness) Deej you might like Studio R ft. Capitol A - "A & R (Llorca Remix)".

I'll track down your recommendation.

Spottie, Friday, 12 August 2016 17:29 (nine years ago)

is there perhaps some history of quik not getting proper acknowledgement of contributions? his phrasing re "In Da Club" percussion kinda seems like it:

Right. They don't even know why they like that song "In Da Club" by 50 Cent. They just know that they've heard it more than any other song, and it never gets old somehow. Well, it's because I helped Dr. Dre with the drums. I gave him those claps, and that kick. He acknowledges that now. I used to say for years, "You guys don't understand! I gave Dr. Dre those drum sounds!" "Yeah, yeah, okay David." And now when I go into the studio with Dre, he'll tell his people. And I'm like, Dre, that right there is worth more than any advance you could have ever paid me, any royalty or publishing. Acknowledgment like that from you? I'm good.
