I need more wall of noisy/distorted guitar rock, bands that followed along in the Husker/SY/Big Black/Dino Jr mould, plz.

Modern examples welcome. Stuff like Squirrel Bair, Bitch Magnet, Superchunk I already know about.

Ok, start.

I think Polvo would fit in this category. I need to get me some Polvo.

Polvo's a bit too mathy for me, but the other suggestions have merit.

I'm listening to the Cows right now and came here to post them but M@tt beat me to it! So then I was going to post Hammerhead and he posted them already too. Dammit Matt.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

btw freddy votel (2nd drummer also in TVBC w/Paul Metzger) from the cows is in a new band called Skoal Kodiak, who are great...kinda dancey meets early butthole surfers:

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

are squirrel bait really a modern example? their first record came out in, like, 1985! but they were influenced by the Du, so i guess that makes sense. and, yeah, they came after, so...but they were contemporaries! anyway, yeah, i was listening to Tar's Jackson album the other day and it still sounds mighty good to me! i'm sure the cows would too, but i don't think i have any cows records anymore. so sad. AND i was listening to skag heaven the other day. that always sounds good. and i was listening to the pain teens too. old home week.

scott seward, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

Not. nec. a modern example w/ SB, but i guess I wanted both older and currently active bands.

kingfish, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

Also, more skrrrring guitar distortion. Think "Kerosene" or "First of the Last Calls".

Live Skull was a good start.

I was really into Swervedriver's early EPs at the time because they were obviously fans of Dino Jr. and Sonic Youth. Later albums are different but still worth listening to.

first Buffalo Tom album
Seam * Headsparks
Band Of Susans
Arcwelder
Superchunk
Wedding Present * George Best
Pitchblende
Engine Kid
Kepone
Cop Shoot Cop
Laughing Hyaenas
Bullet Lavolta
Steel Pole Bathtub
Pegboy

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

Bizzump.

Archers of Loaf was surprisingly correct, esp. 'Harnessed in Slums'.

Gimme more chimey Husker rock & roll. Swervedriver & Superchuck are too easy, and already covered. There's gotta be dudes w/in the last 5 years who've put out similar guitar-focused records. The Beatings are a good choice, for example.

And if not, then fuck it; I'll fill in the gap.

^ this album is pretty crucial if you like Husker Du or Squirrel Bait or Mission of Burma. Came out in about 1986 on Taang! Records, they were from Boston or thereabouts. One of the great lost guitar records of the 80s.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Thursday, 9 July 2009 09:37 (sixteen years ago)

Title is 'Burning In Water', check out 'Less Than Gravity' on their myspace.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Thursday, 9 July 2009 09:39 (sixteen years ago)

I can't see an image but I'm guessing this is Moving Targets?

xp I was right haha!

Real Men Play On Words (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 9 July 2009 09:40 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, the picture has gone for me too - good guess. Didn't realise that Pat Brady had died recently, his drumming was pretty special.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Thursday, 9 July 2009 09:47 (sixteen years ago)

Used to love the Cateran too, who were the Scotland's answer to this sort of thing.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Thursday, 9 July 2009 10:03 (sixteen years ago)

one year passes...

And if not, then fuck it; I'll fill in the gap.

Does that mean you've formed yer own Husker-influenced band by now?

No Age is an obvious one, since they backed Mould on a set of HD songs at the 2009 All Tomorrow's Parties. Also Parts & Labor.

Man Sized Action
Lemonheads
Foo Fighters, oddly
Sorry
Salem 66
The Wipers
Descendents
Bad Religion

ten years pass...

I'm in the mood for something like this – noisy, punky, "alternative" rock (from any era). I'm listening to Unwound's 1995 album right now; somehow that band felt like the right "go-to" (I've only heard Fake Train before). It's good! Kind of scratches that itch. Anything offhand to recommend; maybe a little newer, and off the beaten path? (I'm familiar with lots of names in this thread.) Thx
