C or D: "Lido Shuffle"

my gawd! a heroic, gangbusters, guns blazing performance!

deep pocket courtesy of Jeff Porcaro and David Hungate, assured vox from Scaggs, and keyb arpeggios that bespeak the patented Rick Wakeman "spread your wings and fly" move wherein a dude plays two synths across the bank from one another…

whatchoo think?

― Veronica Moser, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

i may be predisposed to like this, whatever it is

― 696, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

Classic.

― kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

Extremely classic

― Tom D., Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

WHOA-OH-AY-OH-OH-OH!

― J, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

hard to believe this was on the same LP as "Lowdown"...time for Silk Degrees to get a thread of it's own...

― henry s, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

Totally totally classic, with the only downside being that it took me years to figure out what it was, because "Lido" is the last thing I would have guessed for the lyrics and "Woah oh oh OHhhhhhhh" turns out to be hard to Google. The synth arpeggios are aces, they're like the keyboard equivalent of the solo on "Hotel California."

― Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

"deep pocket"

― blueski, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

my parents bought me a record player when i was 8 at a jumble sale, and this single was on the turntable. so by default the first record i ever owned. woah oh oh oooooohhhhhhhhhhh!

― zappi, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

I wanna know what Geir thinks of this tune!

― Veronica Moser, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< "Lowdown"

― The Good Dr. Bill, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

Agreed. Lowdown rocks tha spot. It's got flutes and cooing and that fat rubbery bouncy bassline at the start.

― gnarly sceptre, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

"Lowdown" is still the go-to song at amusement parks for rides that go in circles, and have names like the Calypso, the Bobsled, etc...

― henry s, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

they play gorgeous mid-tempo old-school r&b on bobsled rides? shouldn't they be playing emo or hip-hop?

― fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

Request for Silk Degrees thread seconded!

― Brad C., Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

Well, what can I say?

― Mark G, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

Nothing but choice Happy Hardcore and DJ Sammy on the waltzers, plz.

― gnarly sceptre, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

ONE. MORE. TIME. OUGHTA DO IT.

My gay emo bandmembers nicknamed me "Lido" because I dared to put this on a mix CD for them.

― Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

great tune

― Johnny Hotcox, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 23:30 (nineteen years ago)

Never realized that was Jeff Porcaro, either, although it seems obvious in hindsight.

― Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 02:50 (nineteen years ago)

some Boz/ Porcaro youtube gold. Jeff P. must be, like, 22 here.

Silk Degrees was my mom's favorite album when I was a little kid, so I would here it all the time. Lido Shuffle is definitely a classic.

Lido Shuffle and Brandy (You're a Fine Girl) make an awesome 1-2 punch on oldies stations

― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 30 December 2010 05:23 (fifteen years ago)

You know, I think iTunes would make a bit more profit if they'd sensibly price older songs like this. I caught the tail end of this walking into a gas sttation last night and decided that I NEEDED this song. But since it was 1.29 I just listened to it on YouTube a couple times and forgot about. Jesus Apple if you weren't so damn greedy, you'd have earned nearly ONE WHOLE DOLLAR from me last night, instead you get nothing. Sleep with THAT on your conscience tonight Jobs.

Anyway, this song? Fucking great and C all the way.

― one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 30 December 2010 14:18 (fifteen years ago)

Digressing with a bit of a rant here, I just don't get Apple's pricing for these older songs AT ALL. I can totally understand why the latest Black Eyed Peas or Katy Perry single is 30 cents more than average price, but why all these old one-hit wonders? I mean, there are times when I have really wanted to go on a tear, downloading half-remembered pop hits from my youth, but they are inevitably priced at $1.29. Like, "oh this song was semi popular for a week in 1982 and the only song from this artist people remember, so JACK THE PRICE UP". I mean, maybe this sructure works for the casual listener in a way that I don't understand, but I feel like marking a 30 year old hit down to 89 or 79 cents would lead to a whole hell of a lot more sales. Kind of like when the record industry realized they'd sell more, I don't know, Eagles catalog titles if they were four bucks cheaper than new releases (of course this was before the culture of REISSUE REISSUE REMASTER, so I don't know). Anyway, I'm operating on little sleep and dealing with a metric shit-ton of personal issue right now so don't mind my ranting, but I have to say again how goddamned CLASSIC "Lido" is.

This popped up on shuffle on my ipod today at the gym. Thank you Ipod shuffle. What a great fucking song.

for a second I thought I'd clicked on the Lady Gaga thread bookmark and was like, yeah, she's got horns on the album cover, hadn't really noticed the synth arpeggios but i bet they're there...

Yeah, I was blown away...how do you even create something so ridiculously seamless?

My younger bro and his girlfriend were hanging out with me when I put it on for the first time, and they were digging on every song. And I just love how Lido is universally pretty much everyone's favorite song, even if they don't know it yet.

I can see it. Or a rascally uncle

― calstars, Sunday, 25 June 2023 16:55 (three years ago)

in the video above he's definitely rascally uncle Lido for the first part, but starting with the phone call montage he turns into Bill "Boz" Bozeman, former rock star turned suburban dad with some shitty office job who dreams of returning to stardom

I feel like it would have been appropriate for him to appear as a regular guest on The Love Boat.

Whenever anyone mentioned the Lido Deck he'd be like "Hey, did I ever tell you they named that after-" "Yeah, shut up, Boz. It has been called the Lido Deck since 1971, and it derives from the Italian for 'beach.' Isaac, cut this guy off."

An earlier great Boz Scaggs recording I have come to really love getting to know from the YT algorithm is the long jam "Loan Me a Dime" which features some great Duane Allman guitar playing.

― earlnash, Sunday, 25 June 2023 18:51 (three years ago)

Boz also did a take of Neil's "On the Beach" a few years back that is really worth checking out too.

Boz needs a crowd of people

― calstars, Sunday, 25 June 2023 18:55 (three years ago)

In an 80s x-over kind of way, you could have the episode of Magnum PI where Boz meets The Boz and both help solve a crime with the gang.

I mean, TLC were at one point going to be called “The Silk Degrees”:
https://i.gifer.com/2GXc.gif

I don’t need to tell you their biggest hit was “No Scaggs”, plus they knew the answer to the man’s question, ‘what can I say?’: “all he can say is, baby, it’s good to me”

Boz’s whole career in general seems to foreshadow that of TLC, and it’s not even all that cryptic, Down Two Then Left being just the most obvious example

in short, that “Lowdown”/“Creep” mashup is long overdue

that was from a network program, '76 or '77, which aimed to show what a day in the working life of a big time singer was like…hence the shots of Boz working the phones, as he was his own manager… I wonder if his son, who nepotastically slid right in for a job at Rolling Stone for many years, has ever visited ILX? Are you there, Austin? Show yourself!
