so what you want is "That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever!" -- Job 19:24

but it's whoever has the better arg, "For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges." -- Deuteronomy 32:31

(yes the chron is backwards but in the Bible the future reveals the past...)

Rock is the sound of a generation coming to consciousness and then drowning that consciousness in a haze of pills and cheap booze.

Borges writes a story somewhere about a persecuted heretical sect who revere Judas Iscariot because without his betrayal, no crucifixion, no resurrection, no Second Coming at the Last to Redeem us all blah blah. Somewhere else there’s a novel — I forget even where I read about it — in which Pilate in retirement is asked about the Jesus incident, and can’t even remember that it all happened. As some of you know, I’ve been writing a history of music and technology — from Edison to the present — for a long long time: I always imagined when I arrived at the 60s, the music I first loved and grew up with, that I would be able to speed up. I was wrong: the more I explore, the less I feel I know. What rock is, what punk is, how and why they work, how and why they don’t: well, you know? Is punk rock’s antithesis, or did it arrive intended top rewire and complete rock? Punk means rentboy, the kind of shrewd pretty prison kid who survives by playing along with the whims of abusers. Oh yes it played with a return to 50s values (the instant hedonism of that lost children’s pop crusade) and rejecting 60s values (well, no it totally didn’t, but THAT briar-patch is not one I’m venturing into for the moment).

"Is punk rock’s antithesis, or did it arrive intended to rewire and complete rock?"

Same thing, surely? (Dialectically speaking...) The Sex Pistols were simultaneously a pub rock band and a Dadaist cutup.
