Deep Purple is better than Led Zepplin

Yes, it's true... I listened to "In Rock" last nite and arrived at this obvious conclusion. No hobbits or faeries, just sordid tales of cars, groupies and most of all, speed. They just played with more finesse, and Ian Gillan could scream without sounding like a woman (Robert Plant). Jon Lord's overdriven Hammond anchored the bottom, Ian Paice is a phenomenal and underrated drummer, the whole band just seethes with a barely contained fury. No "Battle of Evermore" or that kind of crap. I then listened to "Machinehead" and it only affirmed this view. Discuss.

I would be inclined to agree if I didn't like Zep so much already. However, Deep Purple's version of "Hush" is one my favorite songs from that entire era.

faeries are bettah than groupies and hobbits are bettah than kars

Beneath that punkish exterior, Andy is a mere cock-rocker at heart. ;-) Actually, having recently listened to the box set, I have to agree that the band were definitely propulsive motherfuckers at their best -- but there's always room for space and falsettos.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You called it, Ned... I don't listen to much punk anymore, just as a baker tires of the smell of nice freshly baked loaves. I'll take Grand Funk over Government Issue anyday.

Andy, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the idea of Andy coming to your town to help you party it down.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Grand Funk over Government Issue, gee whatta choice.

, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The world needs a motorik cover version of Highway Star.

Damian, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i luv Deep Purp btw, i wasnt raggin on them. but Grand Funk, they were bunk. OK 2 good songs or somethin.

, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Deep Purple were cool but they were only a great Vanilla Fudge rip-off

dave q, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Hawkwind better than Deep Purple or Led Zep or the Pink Fairies.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

same actually

, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah even the pink fairies!

, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

& re: purp vs fudge, that's a great example of a copy band beating the prototype's ass.

, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Purp/Fudge = "Ride on Time"/"Love Sensation"

dave q, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ahem,

"TALIESYN: Bard of the fabulous court of King Arthur in beautiful Camelot. As such, he was responsible for providing all the entertainment and setting the various moods of the court. The Book of Taliesyn is a representation of seven different feelings with Ritchie, Rod, Ian, Nicky and Jon, establishing the moods under the spiritual direction of Taliesyn. The book is not an end in itself, but merely another link in the chain of musical progression which is evolving as Deep Purple."

somebody somebody come to my side, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, yes, true... that is pretty D&D. But, in all fairness, that was from Deep Purple Mark I, who also butchered "Help!" and "Hey Joe" on the first album... and it was this lineup that was also responsible for the pompous London Philharmonic bullshit. When Gillan & Glover came on board, Blackmore redirected the whole thing toward a more metallic roar, and they never looked back. Even the above doesn't mention orcs or elves though, does it?

Andy, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"the pompous london phil bullsh" was the 1st album by the GOOD line- up!

'less i am suffering from senile dementia.

, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Duane's right, actually. Sorry, Andy, prog and elves lurk in the closet and you cannot ignore them. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

DP name-dropped FZ in their most famous song. Ergo, they're better than LZ.

seven months pass...
You have to be fucking high to even think that Deep Purple could've been better than Zep. If they could've got their shit together maybe,(on a freezing day in hell) but inner band conflicts, drugs, popularity (unchecked and allowed to go to their heads, IE Ritchie) caused the band to loose site of the true message. The music is the listeners not the musicians, I could play cello like Yo-Yo but if the listener wants to hear canary puke I might as well be playing my skin flute. Truth is what the people want is what the people want. If you happen to be a small segment that thinks your band is better than anyone elses, I say more power to ya. Don't try to shove your shit down my throat though. In the end the band that is still played on the air wins, just the way it is so deal with it you fucking losers

I think a better question is, What song is better for a t-top 84' Camaro and a mullet: "Smoke On the Water" by Deep Purple or "Hair of the Dog" by Nazareth?

Craig Struthers is not just OTM, but in several currencies at once

Saw this on wiki:

The reunion tour followed, starting in Australia and winding its way across the world to North America, then into Europe by the following summer. Financially, the tour was also a tremendous success. In the U.S., the 1985 tour out-grossed every other artist except Bruce Springsteen.

So I thought, no fucking way. And of course the source cited is Jon Lord, citing no one.

Then we did the Perfect Stranger tour and we were second in ticket sales to Bruce Springsteen.

OK, Jon Lord.

Sabbath was better then both of them, but that's obvious.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Monday, 26 December 2022 20:30 (two years ago)

Which Sabbath? Certainly not any form of the band that persisted after about 1976.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 26 December 2022 21:23 (two years ago)

Deep Purple probably released more decent songs in the 60s than Zeppelin did:

And the Address
Hush
The Shield
Chasing Shadows
Blind
Bird Has Flown

vs

Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
What Is and What Should Never Be

I don't really like much Zeppelin before III, the reverb on those first two albums gives me a headache.

Were Uriah Heep an attempt to split the difference between the two groups? For Purple fans who wanted to hear about Rainbow Demons instead of big fat tires?

Sabbath was better then both of them, but that's obvious.

Never Say Die might be the best record released by any of these three groups past 1976. I don't mind the reverb on that one.

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 28 December 2022 17:36 (two years ago)

That's a bold and unusual take. I always thought the best part of that album was the cover and sleeve art. Ozzy really phoned it in.
