Here we go! The Zombies! Bjork! Joseph Arthur! Yo La Tengo! Paradise Lost! Pacific! The Sixths! Poem-Cees! Max Eider! 3LW! The Aloof! Jonathan Richman! What do you THINK???

Tom, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm putting the entries up in stages because otherwise coding would fuck me up. So coming up TOMORROW we have entries from ILX heroes Mike Daddino, Nathalie, weblog wizard Wisdom Goof, and MORE!

Tom, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

wow i doubted mitch but he came strong on a BET ninety-seven style!! also anthony i like yours.

ethan, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Very nice so far, good range of styles in a short space and place. For sheer hilarity, right now Dan wins.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mitch?

Jimmy's has a nice punch.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I take it the Reviewer listing denotes the person chosen to write about it in June?

Curt, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Okay I'm ready for the next batch.

Andy K, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, it does - thats a bit unclear actually, I'll sort it out

Tom, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(mitch did the logo)

ethan, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, he's thanked on the front page for logos but not specifically on the 102 page, something else I'll have to sort out.

Tom, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nice ones, especially Dan's. The only one that's really off the mark would be the Paradise Lost one. With the two first albums, this band was as innovative as they come, doing things no one had done before, amazingly coherent and powerful, spawning a generation of Yorkshire bands. After that, they somehow lost the plot (or at least, their innovative instincts) in a major way, first trying their luck at being a Black Album-era Metallica with the 4th and 5th one (horribly off-key vocals!) and finally trying to come as close to a cross between Depeche Mode and the Sisters as humanly possible. The band has now become a footnote to history.

Siegbran Hetteson, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Feeling apprehensive now. A bit late fer that I suppose.

david h, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Talk about MEEEEE.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

thanks Ethan!

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cool!! 3LW! I might get that Paradise Lost album!

jel --, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rilly! Talk about MEEE! I think I finally started to approach Joshua Clover territory with that piece.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Heh...well, I pretty much said what I needed to say about the Paradise Lost thing, but I picked that album because I think it's overlooked and a lot of people might actually like it. I know the debut and Gothic were all groundbreaking and influential and stuff in the metal scene, but Draconian Times and One Second are the classics for me.

I liked Paul's review and Jimmy's 'review' quite a bit.

Jordan, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think the moral of this story is that I should drink before writing.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's what I did before I wrote my Focus Group comments and look how that turned out.

Ian, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sterl: I love that you just name checked (the other) Clover.

bnw, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I'm going to hate that Paradise Lost album, no offence Jordan, I'VE BEEN SET UP. bastards.

Ronan, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All the selections of recipients were completely random Ronan. It just turns out that a couple of them (yours and Tim H's in particular) were very fitting.

Tom, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I liked Jimmy's.

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i was actually kinda psyched to be deluged with 7000+ 102 beats thats! after they're all presented in installments, will there be a single page where we can read them all in one go?

also what's up with the velvety conspiracy? was there a requirement to use the word 'velvety' that i didn't know about?!?!

anyhow they all rock so far!! a good job by all

geeta, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah no I know. it's ok honestly.

Ronan, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can you confirm ahead of press time that mine really is that rubbish?

Graham, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sterling's most made me want to hear the song. It's got atmosphere.

Keiko, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sterl is closet gonzo. Either that or street style is closet gonzo.

JM, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Predictably Sterling's is the only one I've gone looking for to download so far. (It's good). Though I want to download all the individual tracks people wrote up and make a 102 Beats That compilation!

Tom, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"solidest", Matos? ;-)

The first four words of Billy Dods' piece are identical to mine IIRC. In fact the whole thing has a familiar feel to it. I'm gonna get accused of plagiarism, I just know it. (I wouldn't mind, only I've been unintentionally duplicating other people's posts on IL* all week.)

Good stuff everyone, btw. (I bet someone's said that already too)

Paranoid Jeff, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rob Morgan's pick sounds the most intruiging. Nice logo Mitch!

michael bourke, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Michael I have an entry from you which is in fact the missing 02long.html (entries are going up in the order I recieved them) but it is 80000 words long not 102 - can I edit or would you like to?

Tom, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes, solidest. what, you think I'm gonna run from that one? please....

M Matos, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

80000,shit sorry Tom, i knew it was way too long but er, not that long....could you edit it if its not too much hassle?

michael bourke, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I may have been hit a bit with the exaggeration stick.

Tom, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And here I was imagining Carrot mailing Tom a 300 page paperback novel thinking, "Hmm... that's about 102 words."

Dan Perry, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

On the 3LW tip -- "No More" was to 2000 what "I Do" was to 2001.

Also, search "Crush" with the immortal line "dad would kill me if he only knew/baby girl been puttin it down/when he ain't around"

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
This has been updated -- any thoughts? The person writing about my Dismemberment Plan track hated it. Also, my response piece was very boring.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 18 April 2003 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't wait until I have some time to browse these more thoroughly, but the ones I've read were great! (THANK GOD my review reads better than my initial post, whew!)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 April 2003 12:36 (twenty-three years ago)

my logo was meant to go across the whole screen. i forgot the format. oh well.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait, are they all updated? Did I miss something?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

The responses are up now. I'm suprised Tom didn't post an article response thread. Mine is in reply to the Kinks record. I hope people like it.

Graham (graham), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

These are all old. Let's do it again, this time with newer songs!

(ducks)

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank god they put up my SECOND review of Soul Stirrers. Jeebus my first run was poor. Though this one might not be any better.

jm (jtm), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

That was great, DV. Glad you enjoyed the disc. (Immersion = Colin Newman [ex- of Wire] and Malka Spigel. It's unfortunate and surprising to me that they haven't got more attention.)

I'm sorry I haven't submitted my review of M Doughty. To be honest, I really didn't feel like I appreciated the songs enough to even give a meaningful criticism, sorry.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Mine wasn't melodramatic enough.

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

You can't be melodramatic when I'm around

jm (jtm), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Melodrama.

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

haha, I still thought the suffix -scape had some useful currency back when that was written.

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 18 April 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)
