I love that "Run Through the Jungle" apparently got R&B play in the day, while followup "Lookin' Out My Back Door" made it to at least one C&W station.

Vote: "Up"/"Run"

My brain just short-circuited - my heart said 'Down on the Corner' 'cause the flip is too socially signficant ... but my heart says 'have you ever'/'hey tonight' ... went with my brain.

BlackIronPrison, Sunday, 3 June 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

oops . meant to say brain first - went with 'Down on the Corner'

BlackIronPrison, Sunday, 3 June 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

I never thought this would be one of the hardest polls, but it is dammit.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 June 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

Bend/Jungle for me.

On Memorial Day there was some jackass in the park with a deck chair, a craked-up boombox, and Old Glory. One of his jams was "Run Through The Jungle".

I should be more charitable; maybe he knew exactly what he was saying with that...

Jon Lewis, Sunday, 3 June 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

"cranked-up" that is.

Jon Lewis, Sunday, 3 June 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

this is impossible - one of the best singles bands ever

Shakey Mo Collier, Sunday, 3 June 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

I might actually go with Rain/Tonight tho - some of these A/B pairings are really strange (Fortunate Son was a B side?!)

Shakey Mo Collier, Sunday, 3 June 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

Was listening to Chronicle on a road trip recently and placed myself in the same dumbfounded position as this poll does. The best answer I could come up with was "Whichever Creedence song is playing AT THIS MOMENT is the best Creedence song there is." It's kinda a zen thing, I guess.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Sunday, 3 June 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

Not sure if 'Porterville' was ever a single but is a great one nevertheless.

calstars, Sunday, 3 June 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

Most of these were considered "Double A-sides," however that played out in those days (guess it had to do with how they were promoted).

OTM, except replace "whichever Creedence song is playing at this moment" with "whichever Creedence song I am currently looking at the name of and/or thinking about". and voting for singles just makes things even harder, because "Who'll Stop the Rain" and "Bad Moon Rising" are two of my favorite CCR tracks, but they're both paired with songs that I don't particularly love, whereas "Down on the Corner"/"Fortunate Son" or "Up Around the Bend"/"Run Through the Jungle" gets you two awesome songs for the price of one!

bernard snowy, Sunday, 3 June 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

I can remember going camping with about 50 other students during a retreat for our university newspaper. The only music we had for the entire trip was a battered cassette copy of Chronicles, which turned out to be the perfect soundtrack. I can remember sitting in my deck chair, beer in hand, realizing the near perfection of CCR's songcraft. I have to agree with kkvsgojira and bernard: The truth is, depending on your mood, and the context, any CCR single can be the best.

Binjominia, Sunday, 3 June 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

Chronicle was the first CD I got as a kid.

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 3 June 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

This isn't easy. Up Around The Bend or Have You Ever Seen The rain probably. Strange how they had one no 1 single here in the UK then didn't have any big hits after. A travesty.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Sunday, 3 June 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

aw man, I just realized that since I quit my job, I won't have anyone to enjoy Creedence wednesdays with anymore! total bummer

bernard snowy, Sunday, 3 June 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

You worked for the Human Genome Project, didn't you?

Jon Lewis, Sunday, 3 June 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

no, but I was doin' science. why do you ask?

bernard snowy, Sunday, 3 June 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, I was just being silly! I just liked the idea of Creedence Wednesdays in a lab environment. What kind of science were you doing?

Jon Lewis, Sunday, 3 June 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

I went with my first thought, "Green River," even though the b-side isn't the strongest.

But I might vote again before it's done.

Rock Hardy, Sunday, 3 June 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

"Down On The Corner" b/w "Fortunate Son"

"Up Around The Bend" b/w "Run Through The Jungle"

how do you choose between these? you can't

am0n, Sunday, 3 June 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

breast cancer research. and really, Creedence Wednesdays were more of a "me and one other dude getting sick of listening to rhythmic adult contemporary" thing than a defining feature of the lab.

xpost: by voting for "Travelin' Band" b/w "Who'll Stop The Rain"!

bernard snowy, Sunday, 3 June 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

"Green River."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 3 June 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

I gave some serious consideration to "Green River"/"Commotion," 'cause I love "Commotion" so much. So punk!

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Monday, 4 June 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

Proud Mary/Born on the Bayou. The best A/B combination.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 4 June 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)

Imagine a band with enough high-quality material that they could afford to use the likes of "Lodi" and "Who'll Stop The Rain" as B-sides.
These are all great singles, and I want to single out "Proud Mary/Bayou" for showing what Fogerty could do with little more than one fuggin' chord. But ultimately I think "Down On The Corner"/"Fortunate Son" is the most all-around satisfying.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 4 June 2007 01:15 (eighteen years ago)

"bad moon rising"/"lodi" got my vote -- one of the strongest A/B sides of any band ever.

Eisbaer, Monday, 4 June 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Monday, 4 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Total embarrassment of riches. Don't Look Now, Effigy, and Hideaway weren't even singles? Voted for Born On The Bayou pretty much at random.

dad a, Monday, 4 June 2007 23:48 (eighteen years ago)

Thank you, ILX System. You may return to your closet.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 4 June 2007 23:58 (eighteen years ago)

haha wtf

seven months pass...

still can't believe I was the only vote for "Travelin' Band" b/w "Who'll Stop The Rain". in the sense that both A. I can't believe I voted for that and B. I can't believe nobody else did.

bernard snowy, Friday, 1 February 2008 07:49 (seventeen years ago)

Actually, that's the only one I liked "a lot" at the time. The rest were "OK" by me.

Mark G, Friday, 1 February 2008 09:29 (seventeen years ago)

"Who'll Stop The Rain" is epic. "Travelin' Band", I always found kinda forced. The horns add nothing, and it just doesn't choogle. (I like the line about the state militia, though.)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Friday, 1 February 2008 18:38 (seventeen years ago)

makes sense. I was about to comment on how superior the B-side is in every instance except for "Travelin Band"

will, Friday, 1 February 2008 19:03 (seventeen years ago)

(which is to say it's not as clear cut a winner)

will, Friday, 1 February 2008 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

ok and may not hold true w/r/t these two: "I Put A Spell On You" b/w "Walk On The Water", "Sweet Hitch-Hiker" b/w "Door To Door"

will, Friday, 1 February 2008 19:05 (seventeen years ago)

weren't those their last singles right before the band fell apart?

Display Name, Friday, 1 February 2008 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

I Put a Spell on You, I believe, is their second single (after Suzie Q), whereas their last single, I don't remember the A-side, but the B-side is, I believe, the emotionally gripping Someday Never Comes.

Drugs A. Money, Friday, 1 February 2008 21:26 (seventeen years ago)

still can't believe I was the only vote for "Travelin' Band" b/w "Who'll Stop The Rain".

The single loudest record I've ever owned - honestly about twice as loud as anything else. I missed this poll, don't know what I would have voted for - maybe "Proud Mary"/"Born on the Bayou"

Actually, "Someday Never Comes" was the A-side, and the last CCR hit to make the Top 40.

Rev. Hoodoo, Saturday, 2 February 2008 14:08 (seventeen years ago)

Taking into account both A and B sides, I guess I would have voted for one of these; hell if I know which one, though:

Down On The Corner" b/w "Fortunate Son" 22
"Bad Moon Rising" b/w "Lodi" 7
"Up Around The Bend" b/w "Run Through The Jungle" 7
"Green River" b/w "Commotion" 5

In general, I'd say their cover versions and songs about rain are overrated and their really fast songs are underrated. But probably not by everybody.
