‘Both Sides of the Brain’ [which I just downloaded off emusic.com] seems to me like one of the best hip hop albums of the past two or three years, but I don’t recall him ever been mentioned here. Did I miss a thread or is he just not that highly regarded? If not, why not?

Del was invovled in Blurillaz, he has been mentioned E NUF.
Alright rap skillz, neds help with lyrics somedays. Also of note is his duet with J Mascis.

I thought the music and the lyrics were both more interesting than his rapping. ‘Pet Peeves’ for instance, is one of the smartest songs about middle-class gangsta poseurs I’ve heard, and the sax blowing at the end is unusual for hip hop but fits perfectly. The whole album is full of subtle touches like that.

I really like that album, actually. Deltron less so, and Blurillaz was a waste besides the music videos. He's humorous and skillful with the syllables although a little trapped in his romper room tone of voice.

honda is otm. del has great wordplay. his flow is just tired. im all del-ed out.

chaki, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He's been mentioned many times. Great, great rapper, one of the very best -- and I mean that. His Gorillaz verses (an unfairly disliked band) stuff were okay, but they definitely have a tired, knocked-off quality, as opposed to most of his rapping, which is very intense. Deltron 3030 is his definite album, IMO, though his solos and Hieroglyphics stuff is excellent as well.

hahahahahahahahahahahaha

ethan, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yuck. gorillaz should be hated more than they are. plodding, stiff, and a bit dumb, in a bad way. deltron also lacks spark... the production is all bricklike and rigid - to a less awful extent than gorillaz, but still just.not.that good. it sounds like the kind of hiphop that would be made by someone who had only ever listened to the sneaker pimps or something. del's rapping - i find it jarring, i don't like his style. he's like this big lumbering dumb animal.

hence neither funky nor homosapien

-BSotB- is a pretty decent record.. I prefer the production to the rhymes. Most Heiro production is totally on point.. it sounds like Sega Genesis music! Del's rhymes, while sounding fresh at first grow stale kinda quickly.. I think his style really appeals to people who don't listen to much hip hop. It comes off as gimmicky to a lot of more avid hip hop listeners.

That said, it's far from being "one of the best" of anything.. it's just a solid album.. pretty typical Heiroglyphics stuff. If you liked that one, you'll probably like Souls of Mischief's -Trilogy-. Seek "Medication" and "Interrogation" off that one...

Bobby D. Gray, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What, you prefer his b-movie actor cousin? Har har.

I think a lot of Del's appeal lies in the novelty of a lot of his references, especially in his Deltron 3030 material. You don't get a lot of MCs rhyming about total sci-fi/anime/cartoon geek stuff, so I suppose your annoyance with him might hinge on that. Gamera, Transformers, Robotech- that kind of shit. Not to get all backpackery on everyone but it's a nice break from "I got mad bling Bentley pimp ho guns".

P.S.: I like Gorillaz. I also hate ABBA. My opinion is probably worthless now. Damn.

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alas the ABBA heyday of ILM is long gone and we now live in decadent times where heretics like you are allowed the run of the boards. Besides you also like the Strokes if I recall so you're one of us at heart.

Tom, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dull album

search: jaw gymnastics, phoney phranchise (domino mix), and protoculture (but for only a listen or two)

bc, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, Del's nerdiness is nearly his entire appeal to me. Every facet of his music tells of someone who played the same video games and watched the same anime I did whilst growing up. Which is really cool.. That doesn't mean the rhymes are all that interesting though. I don't care so much about the content as how it's delivered.

Bobby D. Gray, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, his voice is kinda take-or-leave but he's got that odd delivery where he seems to be just spitting out free-association stuff while still putting it in the context of a theme or a narrative, with tweaks to the whole rhythm of the rhyme scheme here and there to screw with the flow and throw the listener off. I guess that can be irritating depending on your tolerance of abstract style, but he sort of reminds me of a less random/psycho version of Kool Keith. And "If You Must" has THE BEST CHORUS EVER. (Note: hyperbole)

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah.. I understand his flow.. I've been a fan for a while, got all the albums, seen him and all that.. I think I've just grown tired of it over the years. His rapping is unconventional, yeah.. but it's also predictable most of the time. I'm really just waiting for his next album.. I wanna see him take it all to the next level. BSotB was on some other shit compared to his older stuff, and I wonder what the progression from that album will be.

Bobby D. Gray, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Mista Dobalina" from his first album, I Wish My Brother George Was Here, was a great single. As was "Catch A Bad One" from his follow-up album (title escapes me... the cover was made to look like a comic book). But the two albums are kinda weak, and his delivery does kinda get to you after awhile. I haven't heard anything by him since he went indie (nor have I heard Deltron or Gorillaz), so I can't comment on that stuff, but look into the two songs I mentioned if yr curious aboot Del.

Del is one of the most underrated MCs of all time imo
