Sorting Through Nu Folk Rock and Nu Folk

OK, I know folk rock is a hard genre to define because some of it is 75% rock and 20% folk and 5% cheese.

But make a short list of new folk & folk rock that matters. And another short list of what "isn't that good"

Good
Archer Prewitt, Sun Kil Moon, King Creosote, Jim O, David Gray, Howie Beck

uhh.. it isn't that great you guys
iron & wine, elliot smith, devendra Banhart, bright eyes, nick cave (lol)

CaptainLorax, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 02:31 (eighteen years ago)

What's wrong with Iron & Wine?

Drooone, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

Nick Cave isn't really nu anything at this point

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 02:45 (eighteen years ago)

what's wrong with elliott smith?

please explain the (lol).

Emily Bjurnhjam, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 03:00 (eighteen years ago)

Who is Jim O?

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 03:18 (eighteen years ago)

hmmm. Iron & Wine bad, David Gray good?

Drooone, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 03:19 (eighteen years ago)

I don't like nasaly singers, voices that sound like punk rock or emo,or boring deep vocals...

I'm very particular about music. I have to have the whole package (and vocals might be most important to me).

Take sufjan for example. Sure he has a few good tracks (elliot too) but in the end that's all I'm listening to and nothing else by them.

THAT is my humble opinion, and I wouldn't mind if you all shared your opinions about any folk/alternative folk/rock folk/whatever also.

ps.
yeah I don't listen to any david gray or iron & wine or nick cave (so you caught me red-handed). Maybe I don't listen to some of them because they never had enough to hook me. And for the record I have no clue if David Gray is good or not. I just assumed he was.
I'm lame I know.

Jim O'Rourke - Insignificance / Eureka / Loose Fur

CaptainLorax, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 03:23 (eighteen years ago)

You're weird.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 03:29 (eighteen years ago)

You're special

CaptainLorax, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 03:35 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not really following what you mean by "folk" and "folk rock" and how you define "nu". Some of Jim O'Rourke's stuff is slightly folky, I guess, but Eureka? Insignificance?

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 03:35 (eighteen years ago)

please explain the (lol).

Yes, please do.

Drooone, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 03:38 (eighteen years ago)

his vocals are very folky. and his guitar styling sound southern. 75% rock
25% folk. Maybe I should call it rock-folk.

Would you say Jeff Buckley is Alternative Folk? I would

CaptainLorax, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 03:39 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, call it rock-folk.

Drooone, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 03:40 (eighteen years ago)

(lol) because tons of people would disagree with me for raggin on elliot smith, nick cave, etc...

CaptainLorax, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 03:40 (eighteen years ago)

I could of went on longer but I realize my list contained enough stuff I hadn't really listened to.

CaptainLorax, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 03:41 (eighteen years ago)

lol
