Albums and EPs (and singles) to avoid the EP7 dilemma. Plus Gescom as there isn't much and I figure over half of it is pure ae anyway. Plus Lego Feet for sure and Dual Purpose why not. In rough chronological order.

Tri Repetae for me. A classic!

the Dirt, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 09:20 (eighteen years ago)

Incunabula here. Very, very closely followed by Chiastic Slide, LP5 and Tri Repetae.

StanM, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 09:26 (eighteen years ago)

Confield for me - that's some next level shit for sure. Wonder if Gescom will get any votes - Keynell is a stone-cold classic.

Draft 7.30 is where it all went downhill.

ledge, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 09:31 (eighteen years ago)

LP5, forever.

Turangalila, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah, Confield also rules. I always forget about that one (I like Untilted a lot too)

StanM, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 09:59 (eighteen years ago)

Must go back to Untilted. Didn't give it enough time at the er time - my impression was that it was perhaps the least cerebral and most physical of their albums (not a bad thing necessarily).

ledge, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 10:04 (eighteen years ago)

i have way too many of those. like all but 10 (i.e., i stopped obsessing around confield). and i'm going for tri repetae just because.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 10:29 (eighteen years ago)

I have everything available on cd, the rest on mp3. Plus every remix ever. Still a fanboy, just, still obsessing, still hoping they pick it up again.

ledge, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

voted for the first i bought, mostly because i recognised the name and liked the cover. (envane)

i have, i think, 21 plus odd bits of others on comps (all on cd apart from cavity job and wap72. oh, and minidisc.).

koogs, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

Isn't it about time for something new from them? :-/

StanM, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 11:00 (eighteen years ago)

Confield. Wonder if eg Mindisc will get any votes?

toby, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 12:15 (eighteen years ago)

I only have 10 of the above (but most of the rest on MP3 thanks to a certain ILXor I won't get into trouble) and I thought I was a fan. Went for Tri Repetae, cos it's sublime. Like the more recent stuff too. Was tempted to voted for Gantz Graf or Minidisc just cos I like 'em as artefacts (the DVD video of the former, the dozens of track-names on the latter).

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 12:19 (eighteen years ago)

Anvil Vapre. It was the 1st Autechre I bought.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

mine too, but i like tri repetae better.

, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

garbage, anvil vapre or tri repetae. it's so hard to know which vibeless pile of clanking tedium to vote for.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

i'll vote for envane because it's poised halfway between their two best works.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

Peel Session 2 = secret classic. Chiastic Slide after that.

Guilt = I never got around to hearing LP5

Jordan, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

Peel Session 2: Gelk = yes. Gaekwad = fuck yes. Surprises me every time I hear it, I hope I never figure out exactly wtf is going on there. Other two not so worthwhile, although the Microphone Fiend version of Blifil... yeah it's pretty awesome.

If I had to pick between the EPs and the albums I'd be tempted to go for the EPs. Smaller but more perfectly formed.

ledge, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

I had all of Autechre's stuffs and I deleted them.

jim, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

"vibeless pile of clanking tedium" = lp5

, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

ep7
lp5
keynell rmx b
one of 'this' or 'that', i can't recall which.

been a while since i heard any, though. i therefore vote for the skam frisbee.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

lp5, but the thing i like best is one from a live set at coachella i think, dunno what it is

696, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

coachella '99 livemix dj set. that's the one with the 'microphone fiend' mashup of blifil, the breakbeat mashup of vangelis' 'heaven and hell part 3', tons of other great LP5-era stuff (some of which came out later on ISS:SA, but not all of it)

did a board recording of their last tour ever surface? I have the Geneva room recording you posted once, but I liked those live sets much better than Untilted

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

the 2nd track on that coachella one i really like

696, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

i think the lp5/ep7 stage had the best balance of erm, complexity, for want of a better word - not just wonky noises complexity but an greater emotional complexity too, compared to the earlier tri repetae type idm stuff which wasnt much more than triphop moody soundtrack triteness to my ears. the albums after that passed me by; i assumed they'd fallen into self parody.

having said that, i just stuck on lp5 and half of it is straight electro bangers in a leaner gescom style, and the rest is big simple bewitching toybox melodies and then 'rae', the soppiest ballad they ever did.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

i mean, fuck, they're basically total b-boys at the end of the day.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

the one with "arch carrier"

ciderpress, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

that's LP5 which is the best one. I never got the love for Tri Repetae. I find it a bit dreary and soulless, even for them. EP7 is a great album.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

i voted chiastic slide because i think it's gorgeous and one of the most distinctive things they've done and it deserves more love. then i'd go garbage, tri repetae, amber, cichlisuite, all by a hair. lp5 and confeld haven't aged very well to my ears. my favorite post-confeld thingy is gantz graf, which just totally kills it.

strgn, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

garbage though guys. garbagemx256hl3k or whatever can still wreck me like nothing else, so sad.

strgn, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

Confield still slays me.

bear, bear, bear, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Monday, 11 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

i guess i should give lp5 another chance.

, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

It's their most melodic one. It's the first I ever got by them and as far as I'm concerned, it's their peak achievement. The first two tracks I've never been able to get on with very well, but 'Rae' is a bona fide Autechre classic. Listen to the way the track ends - it winds down in such a beautiful musical box way.

Later you have 'Vose In' with it's sickly-sweet (see what I did there?) modal changes and an effect as if one of them is turning some kind of pitch-knob back and forward.

'Fold4,Wrap5' is pure showing-off but not without being a wonderful track. It sounds as if it's speeding up and slowing down all the time, but really it's just the way the drum pattern works and underneath is yet another beautiful chord sequence.

'Under BOAC' kind of pre-empts the armaggedon style more typical of EP7. It's vast, epic and complex. Noisy too. Weird vocal sounds (you don't really get many voice samples on Autechre records on the whole) including the famous "Is it washable?" sample. And then it sounds like these gargantuan steel springs are being tightened to breaking point, like being trapped inside a guitar that's being tuned up. It's a monster!

'Arch Carrier' is one of the most astounding tracks they ever made. A Knight Rider beat with this gorgeous, evocative string section which I can never work out if it's sampled or more hopefully the use of clever electronic mucking-aroundery swells in the background. It reminds me of long, sad train journeys through the countryside. It'll take your breath away.

And then of course 'Drane2' - thousands of little balls of light bouncing around and making a dramatic "after the flood" release. I like to think there's a sort of lonesome battle horn going on in the background too.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 00:40 (eighteen years ago)

Now if someone could explain Confield to me, I'd be very happy. I find it really painful to listen to.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 00:40 (eighteen years ago)

Shame there was no more love for EP7 - it's a great record and I'd almost go as far as to say that along with "Dropp" the last four tracks are among their very best.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 00:42 (eighteen years ago)

Anvil Vapre is the top EP - I'd concur with Vahid and pick Envane. No Gescom votes! Unsurprising perhaps.

ledge, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 08:44 (eighteen years ago)

confield sounds like a field in lincolnshire with a rusted tractor in it

696, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 08:47 (eighteen years ago)

in a good way

ledge, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 08:49 (eighteen years ago)

theres a bad way?

696, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 08:51 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe not. Anyway I think it sounds more like a lightning-fast train ride through an underground techno-dystopia. Or a lonely probe slowly cruising through the vast emptinesses of space. Or the signal from said probe, received from the other side of the galaxy after being filtered and intercepted and garbled by black holes and quasars and hostile alien civilisations.

ledge, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 09:05 (eighteen years ago)

Also the first track off LP5 is classic. The rhythm track is fast and busy but it's the high needling melody over the top that makes it.

ledge, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 09:12 (eighteen years ago)

ha i never really understand this techno-dystopia stuff in autechre, to me, they just sound very english (i think i once called confield their 'folk album' on here)

mills'n'moors

696, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 09:29 (eighteen years ago)

ok i still cant get into lp5. except for fold4 wrap5, thats a very cute track. but, to be fair, ive fallen out of love with tri repetae as well, except for eutow, overand and stud. (OMG STUD!! not so good on headphones though.)

i probably should have voted for garbage.
