"Fodderstomp" should have been a single, then.

Jazzbo, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

a 'mixie' version was on the 12" bside of "Death Disco"

Mark G, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

I'm betting "public image" takes it

Edward III, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

Oooh, I thought this was a no-brainer for "Public Image" 'til I noticed that you'd included "World Destruction" (which was credited to Time Zone not PiL - although "Open Up" and "Sun" weren't credited to PiL either, so clearly this is a post-'Pistols Lydon poll rather than just PiL).

Stewart Osborne, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, I thought I'd "open up" the options.

I do have "The Animal Speaks" golden paloninos 12" but hey.

Mark G, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

But Mr. Lydon only appears on the B-side of that, no?

Stewart Osborne, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I thought it was the a-side.

The b-side has the presumably guide vocal by someone else.

Mark G, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.sacreddub.com/discography/the-animal-speaks-12 seems to think so.

Jack Bruce then.

Mark G, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

You're probably right, I've only got the song (Lydon version) on some old Golden Palominos comp.

It was never likely to offer much serious competition to the likes of "Public Image", "Flowers Of Romance", "This Is Not A Love Song", "World Destruction", "Rise", "The Body", "Disappointed" or "Open Up" anyway 'though, was it?

(x-post)

Stewart Osborne, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

I heard it for the first time when I was in Chicago, and was thinking "Wow, USA Radio is great! J.Lydon tracks I haven't heard! And he's singing like he's learned how to!"

I bought the 12" much later, and was a bit more "meh" about it, as this was now after "Album" and all that.

Mark G, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 09:42 (eighteen years ago)

rise! gotta be rise! WOT A SONG I MEAN WOT A SONG

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

"Death Disco"

latebloomer, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

public image! gotta be public image! WOT A SONG I MEAN WO ... oh, you get the idea.

tempted to create a third login so i can do "death disco" too, but no. silly.

xpost

simon, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

"Death Disco" is all too easy, so I voted for "Rise," which is one of my favorite singles recorded by anyone, anytime. I'm also quite fond of "Disappointed."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

Public Image, Memories or Rise, but I went with Memories for the way the production changes when it gets to the chorus.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

"Home" all the way.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

Rise

onimo, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

God, I used to hate "Don't Ask Me" but it almost gets by on the sheer force of John's singing.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

I went with Memories for the way the production changes when it gets to the chorus.

It doesn't on the single tho (still unreleased on CD)

Mark G, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

One of the toughest polls yet. 'Rise' wins though.

SeekAltRoute, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

Tempted to vote for "Rise" on nostalgia grounds, but on actual "i like it" grounds I think I'll have to go for either "Public Image" or "Death Disco"... still deciding.

Trayce, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

I chose Seattle, although it's been maybe 15 years since I've even heard a PIL song.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

oh, then please take back my vote.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going with 'Death Disco'. Or 'Public Image'.

Z S, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

trayce: you know "rise" makes sense. nostalgia is simply masking a truly, truly underrated and joyous piece of music.

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

Speaking of Seattle, how is it now? Are there jobs?

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

Torn between "Public Image" and "Home".

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

"Flowers Of Romance" beats "Death Disco" by a whisker, although I'm already having second thoughts.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 7 June 2007 12:58 (eighteen years ago)

MORE PEOPLE NEED TO VOTE FOR "HOME" BECAUSE IT'S FUCKING AWESOME

HI DERE, Thursday, 7 June 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

One of the toughest polls yet.

OTFM.

StanM, Thursday, 7 June 2007 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

I need 10 votes. someone invite ILX poll invites please?

StanM, Thursday, 7 June 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

(yeah, that first one should have been "invent")

StanM, Thursday, 7 June 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Thursday, 7 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Flowers of Romance needs some love!!!! Also it has the best b-side outside of Cowboy Song.

leavethecapital, Friday, 8 June 2007 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

Went for Death Disco in the end. Love that bassline.

Trayce, Friday, 8 June 2007 02:05 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Friday, 8 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

ooh, ta.

Mark G, Friday, 8 June 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

I'm betting "public image" takes it

-- Edward III, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 15:43 (4 days ago) Link

and I claim my $5

Edward III, Saturday, 9 June 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

And Public Image wins, as it should. GET ON BOARD.

Although you folks are making me pull out Home because I can't remember how it goes. I don't remember it being half as good as "Ease" from the same album, though.

Bimble, Saturday, 9 June 2007 03:49 (eighteen years ago)

Haha, I mean Album.

Bimble, Saturday, 9 June 2007 03:50 (eighteen years ago)

I never could get into "Home", something about the way he sings the chorus makes me feel really weird and uncomfortable. Some may argue thats a mark of good music, perhaps. I dunno.

Trayce, Saturday, 9 June 2007 03:55 (eighteen years ago)

"Ease" is good, possibly better, but it was not a single.

The uncomfortable bit about the chorus is that he's essentially singing a fourth interval that is in a key a whole step away from the tonality of the instruments, so one line is in tune and the other one isn't.

HI DERE, Saturday, 9 June 2007 04:04 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm...I'm playing "Home" now and it's definitely made an impact. Quite good! But better than Public Image? I mean, come on.

Bimble, Saturday, 9 June 2007 04:06 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going to play this song a few more times, though. I really like it.

Bimble, Saturday, 9 June 2007 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

Dan: Yeah, you're right. That clash of notes induces a sense of queasy unease. Which is what Lydon is very good at obviously!

Trayce, Saturday, 9 June 2007 04:10 (eighteen years ago)

Damn, I forgot this wasn't the same thread as the TS: MES vs. John Lydon thread. That really did my head in for awhile.

Bimble, Saturday, 9 June 2007 05:51 (eighteen years ago)

Look, I am NOT A PUNK ROCKER ANYMORE! Do YOU HEAR ME?

Where's MAX? I AM NOT A PUNK ROCKER. I REPEAT I AM NOT....

Bimble, Saturday, 9 June 2007 05:52 (eighteen years ago)

This thread was kicked off by viewing one of my many excellent compilation VHS videos, of PIL doing "Disappointed" off the Late show. Probably his most accomplished performance,in both the good and not so good meanings of that word.

Naturally, I voted "Death Disco", but hey.

Mark G, Saturday, 9 June 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

I'm surprised at how well "Death Disco" has done; and astonished at how badly "This Is Not A Love Song" (their highest-rated chart sucess?), "World Destruction" (votes = just me) and "Open Up" (votes = one other poor sap) have done.

Stewart Osborne, Monday, 11 June 2007 09:55 (eighteen years ago)

This was probably crying out for the poll where you get to choose "second fav" as per the VU album one.

Mark G, Monday, 11 June 2007 09:57 (eighteen years ago)

no, its not
