Anti-rockist moments in history.

Approximated transcription of the phone call I just received during my radio show:

Music playing: MF Doom - Go With The Flow

Me: Hello, WMEB!
Dude: Oh. There's a live DJ on.
Me: Yup! What can I do for you?
Dude: I thought it was that Q guy on. Is he luring you over to the dark side?
Me: Well, actually, I really like hip hop and I play it a lot on my show.
Dude: Oh. Right. So this is REAL hip hop, not that pop hip hop stuff?
Me: Well, I don't really have any problem with quote-unquote "pop hip hop", I loves me some Lil John, but sure, this is MF Doom. He's amazing.
Dude: Suuuuuuuure. Well, uh, keep playing good music *snicker*.
Me: Gotcha!

You?

I believe someone was once kicked out of a hotel for similar reasons.

Seriously, though, the only conversation I can remember having along these lines involved talking about bands with a guy who was just really digging into indie rock, and saying about some act that they had a good singles collection, and that was a good starting point -- to which he got really intense and said "no, man, I don't buy collections, I only buy albums." Which made sense, given the kind of stuff he was wanting at the time, but I wound up having to make a short list of all the good proper rockist things you'd miss out on by sticking to that rule: Singles Going Steady, wasting way too much money on Jam records, Complete Recordings indiepop discs like Black Tambourine and Talulah Gosh, etc., etc.

nabisco, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

Which, come to think of it, was possibly an even more rockist argument: "You listen to albums? I listen to collections of those early EPs, which were way better."

nabisco, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

EPs are great though!

wasting way too much money on Jam records

hahahaha so true.

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

The Jam always seem like the ultimate example of that big gulf -- the singles collection is this must-buy that anyone can enjoy, but you'd have to be a serious Jam devotee to really go through buying all the albums.

nabisco, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

or you buy the first three or four jam records on vinyl and then ten years later you're looking through your stuff and you're all "why the hell do i have four jam records???"

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

people are way, way more rockist in reality than you would guess from browsing ILXor and its satellites. they are way more prejudiced, racist, sexist, etc., too, but that's another story. the pop-is-king mindset of hereabouts i would venture most people are at some difficulty to understand. anyway, i ended up speaking with some 17-year-old metal-fan a couple of weeks ago, and he was like a caricature of everything that's wrong with obstinate rockism. for one, he cocksuredly claimed that the meaning of a word was carved in stone - such a ridiculous proposition i actually found it hard arguing against - he also considered most music but rock gay and throwaway. i have to confess i found his dogged zeal quite engaging, even though i acutely disagreed with him in principle. there is something to be said for unreasonable fervour.
