In this case the term "Reggae" can refer to Ska/Rocksteady/Roots/Rockers/Dancehall/Ragga etc...

the next grozart, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

I think my answer has to be Johnny Clarke - None Shall Escape The Judgement. It's just so danceable and has so many different hooks and feelings to it. The flying cymbals, the bass line, the singing is all spot on.

Alright fuck this one pick bullshit:

Best ska track: Prince Buster "Madness"
Best rocksteady track: John Holt "Ali Baba" (although virtually a million Studio One and Treasure Isle tracks deserve mention)
Best reggae track: Cables "What Kind Of World" (ditto plus a million other sides by Perry, Niney, Hudson, Brown, Yabby You, Pablo)
Best roots track: Watty Burnett "Open The Gate" (ditto ditto ditto)
Best lovers track: Janet Kaye "Silly Games" (pretty much indisputable king here)
Best non-digital dancehall track: Barrington Levy "Here I Come"
Best digital dancehall track: Pincers "Bandolero"
Best Burning Spear track: "Creation Rebel"
Best Studio One riddim: Death In The Arena
Best single produced at the Black Ark but not produced by Perry: Pablo Moses "I Man A Grasshopper"
Best bassist ever: Leroy Sibbles
Best rocksteady/reggae producer who barely gets any credit at all: Sonia Pottinger
Best non-Studio One/Treasure Isle compilation that everyone should own: Rebel Music (the original one, although the single disc version is very nice)
Best deejay from the 70s: Dr. Alimantado
Best deejay from 2000 on: Sizzla by a million miles

I reserved the right to change any one of these picks at any time for any reason at all from now until forever.

If not, "Bafflin Smore Signals" possibly.

Ha. I was just coming back to this one to post and thinking about "Bafflin Smoke Signals" but I was thinking it's one of my faves-to-amaze, but not an actual fave.

this morning's choice would have to be: Curly Locks, Black Star Liner, or this cover of "I Never Knew What I Missed 'Til I Kissed You" on Studio One, but I can't remember who it's by. Rediculously cool rhythm and authentic C&W vocal twang.

Reggae is a music genre developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s.

The term reggae is sometimes used in a broad sense to refer to most types of Jamaican music, although the word specifically indicates a particular music style that originated after the development of ska and rocksteady. Reggae is based on a rhythm style characterized by regular chops on the off-beat, known as the skank. The tempo is generally slower than that found in ska and rocksteady. Reggae is often associated with the Rastafari movement, which influenced many prominent reggae musicians in the 1970s and 1980s. Reggae song lyrics deal with many subjects, including faith, love, relationships, poverty, injustice and other broad social issues.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 23 August 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

I don't have a fave reggae track, but I gotta say the various artists compilation Mojo magazine put together and slapped on the front of their Bob Marley issue recently is really amazing. In fact, when I went to see UB40 recently (who I realized I don't particularly like), they put this very Mojo compilation on the PA before the bands came on. I was delighted.

Here's the tracklisting:

Toots & The Maytals - Funky Kingston
Lone Ranger - The Answer
Sugar Minott - Steal Away Girl
Burning Spear - Marcus Garvey
Black Uhuru - What Is Life?
Stephen Marley - Mind Control
Bob Marley & The Wailers - Exodus (live)
Yabby You:Trinity Meets The Dillinger - Jesus Dread
U-Roy And The Congos - Fisherman Style
Freddie McKay - I'm a Free Man
The Heptones - Message From A Black Man
James Eastwood - Darkest Night
Prince Far I - Black Man Land
Keith Hudson & The Soul Syndicate - Nuh Skin Up Dub
Lee Perry & The Upsetters - Curly Dub

Aside from these, there are a few tracks on my Keith Hudson CD that are just INFECTIOUS, like "Old Fashion Way" and "Satan Side".

Can't choose just one. I'll limit myself to three: Horace Andy's Spying Glass, The Congos' Open Up The Gate, and Jimmy Cliff's Many Rivers To Cross. So many other deserving tracks to list. . .

Cheers for reminding me about Culture and Max Romeo. Just went on a DL fest and found Two Sevens (30th Anniversary Edition [where DOES the time go?]), and a bunch of rips of Max Romeo singles.

next grozart tell us how you got into reggae

blueski, Friday, 24 August 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

Why do you ask? I got into Reggae when my man Coxsone Dodd set up his soundsystem back in the early sixties and invited me along to spin some tunes he had lying around.

Actually I think I was just interested in hearing some after going to a few houseparties and it being on, so I bought "Super Ape" and "The Prime Of Horace Andy", which both remain some of my favourite Reggae CDs I own.
