The Velvet Underground member poll provoked interesting debate (and results) - I thought a more modern group might also prove an intriguing polling subject.

Emma ("Baby") 18
Victoria ("Posh")12
Mel B ("Scary") 10

AW this is hard! posh far and away my favourite at the time but she's so freaky in a bad way now - emma is now the best but her cutesiness used to be v grating.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

A B C, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 09:58 (eighteen years ago)

B, because of "I Want You Back"

StanM, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 09:58 (eighteen years ago)

Mel B had the best vocal bits once you mentally discount Mel C's showboating.

I don't know, they were all very equal for me. But I'll go with Mel B. She's certainly the one who's struggled the most outside of the Spice Girls spotlight (Bobby Brown's lovechild?) so she deserves a hug now.

Tim F, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

I voted on which one is the hottest, then and now. Mel B easily.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 11:28 (eighteen years ago)

mel c's showboating was the worst bit. there's a live version of 'viva forever' which is a duet with pavarotti - at the end mel c decides it's a good idea to try and outsing him which is mildly embarrassing

lex pretend, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 11:28 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for Geri - which is how I'd have voted in their heyday I think. I'm not quite sure why, given the unremitting awfulness of her solo records but she seemed to embody the spirit of the band at their best, in the first year or two.

Groke, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 11:29 (eighteen years ago)

What to do? Amber likes Geri for obvious reasons. Alice likes Mel C for also obv reasons.

Mark G, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 11:34 (eighteen years ago)

Mel C was the one with at least a hint of talent, so it has to be her.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

Emma of course.

Mel B is the only other one I like.

StanM, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

I thought this might be a tough one, but I quickly realised it had to be Geri. I still have a soft spot for Mel C but V, E and Mel B have always irritated me a bit.

byebyepride, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 12:20 (eighteen years ago)

What The Lex said in his first post.

I had a k-embarrassing moment at a work social function in 1996 when the subject of this poll came up. I contrived to appear either stupid or racist or both.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

has it been running for that long?

Mark G, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

I fancied Posh at the time but, yeah, look how that turned out. Mel B's pretty cool, I agree, but I had to go for Emma. Mel C still has a moderatley succesful solo career in mainland Europe, efforts range from awful power ballads to trance pop to a cover of "I Want Candy". All of it pretty dire.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 12:53 (eighteen years ago)

wasn't there a Stinky Spice that got kicked out of the band early on for poor hygiene?

You're thinking of Marcel, the Friends monkey who was fired because he vomited up live worms, aren't you? :-)

StanM, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

I kind of can't comprehend how Posh could be anyone's favorite, considering they did the pop group equivalent of keeping her in a box under the stairs. The only line I ever remember her singing is the "You don't need to say 'I love you'/'Cuz I'll shag you anyway"* part of "Say You'll Be There".

Mel B has Eddie Murphy's love child, not Bobby Brown's. Despite this (and despite her being smokin' hot), I voted Mel C. I kind of want to change my vote.

*Thanks to Ally, that is how I will remember that part of the song forever and ever.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 13:33 (eighteen years ago)

I voted Mel B. I may have been swayed by exposure to her album 'Hot'.

Spice Girls were MULTIMEDIA PHENOMENON, the music is only one of many factors to consider!

(To be perfectly honest tho from what I can remember posh was pretty lame in all of those other factors, too.)

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

Ginger was absolutely the best member! I loved her as a kid. She was the attitude and the newsmaker. None of the Spice Girls made even a blip in the US solo-wise (even as a group after their debut they went downhill quickly) so I can only speak to what I remember from years ago.

I would once have had a hard time with this, but they seem to have all sorted it out over the years so that Emma's the most likeable.

Soft spot for Mel C, though -- I might have pegged her as a favorite right around the time of the Spice dissolution. Important question I always wanted to see her answer: does being sporty (a) suck, because you have to wear track pants and look like an idiot, or (b) rule, because everyone else has to maintain ridiculous getups and you get to wear functional dance-appropriate clothes / dress like an unemployed person?

This was a little harder than I thought. All got consideration except for Posh. Speaking of Posh, one thing fun I remembered is that right after they came out I debated whether I should have a secret crush on Posh because she was mysterious (she never sings! she never dances! she never smiles! who's that girl!)

I remember feeling vaguely sorry for her because all the rest got to sing their own bit and all she got to do was stand and pout. As it turns out, that was a good move. Work with your talents.

hobart paving, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

Emma has two hall of fame caliber singles post-Spice (Maybe, What Took You So Long), but she seemed superfluous during the Spice era. So a tough question.

I go with Sporty. She had the attitude, and actually contributed something interesting vocally.

I congratulate the thread on the long-overdue appreciation of Mel B's hotness. No one gave her enough hotness credit in the US back in the day.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

This is so hard. I think they were the only group of this type where all 5 singers were very attractive (at the peak of their fame).. (and prove me wrong if you'd like)

Emma's solo stuff is clearly the best. Mel C's single with Lisa Left Eye wasn't bad at all and I quite enjoyed Mel B's "Feels So Good."

Having said that, I think the best solo Spice single is Posh's "Out Of Your Mind" with the True Steppers. I actually still remember my dad singing it in the car.

In the end, I voted for Mel B because of her laugh.

ok so yeah despite what she is now i guess my vote goes to victoria.

(she was my favourite at the time because she had the best hair.)

lex pretend, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

At the time I was happy that Sophie Ellis-Bextor beat her to the top but now I'm sad she's the only solo Spice not to have a number 1. But in general SEB>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>victoria.

danzig, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

SEB is very mediocre, 'groovejet' apart i don't think she has made a single song worth more than 6/10. most of victoria's solo work is unmentionable ut 'outta your mind' = solid gold, 10/10, and better than 'groovejet'. vicky b wins.

Actually i'm inclined to change to Geri. I was thinking of the other day how excited my friends and I were to hear the Spice World album when it came out, and it felt like such a Geri-helmed concept album. Would anyone else have pushed for "The Lady Is A Vamp"?

"Look At Me" was good too, despite being a bit too obviously post-"History Repeating".

"Viva Forever" and "Say You'll Be There" were nice songs, actually. Not that it was because of the Spice Girls' musical talent in any way (like most teenybopper pop they were written by outside writers), but still...
