hey dudes,
can we talk about how totally kickass king khan & bbq show are? plz include comments on how other khan/bbq-related projects (ex: mark sultan) are also totally kickass.
thanks!

both kk&bbq albums are great. they get that r&b/pre-beatles garage rock thing DOWN like very few others seem to be capable of, shake and swing and rock and the tunes are really, really, really catchy. they can sing, too, which is a pleasant surprise.
first one's fantastic all the way through, second is quality as well but they amp up the garage punk angle and that kinda detracts from their uniqueness (although on a few numbers, like "zombies," they kick so much ass you'd be an idiot to complain).
i've heard mark sultan's sultanic verses once and it sounded v. cool but i haven't had a chance to really familiarize myself with it yet.

i love the latest album, especially the weird scratchy doo wop tunes.
― stevie, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)
and i have sultanic verses waiting on my desk... anyone seen them live?
― stevie, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)
So great! Saw them last year for the first time and they blew me away despite both being sick with food poisioning. They made the subsequent suckiness of the Detroit Cobras endurable.
― Ms Misery, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)
are they based in germany or am i going insane?
detroit cobras... some great moments on record, such a mess live. and they have the potential to be, like, the greatest wedding band ever.
― stevie, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)
Love these guys. I've only got the one they put out on Goner (in the states) but yeah, it's great. I accidentally missed them the last time they came through town. This will not happen again.

I want to like the Detroit Cobras more, but they've really bored me the last couple of times i saw 'em. They did make the mistake of following the Reigning Sound though.
(I'm trying to post from my blackberry- in the Detroit airport no less- apologies if this post appears like 4 times)

I've seen the Detroit Cobras before when they've killed. But this time when they were out with King Khan blew. Rachel was Ms. Bitchy McBitch. Constant complaining about the sound and how she couldn't perform under these conditions, etc. After she stopped and made the band restart a song for the fourth time, we left. I mean I understand that good sound is important but at some point you have to just say fuck it and do your best to give your audience a good show. Chances are (especially as late as they made us wait) they're too drunk to care.

seen them probably 5 or 6 times. seen bbq solo twice, seen the mind controls 3 times. they're always a blast.
detroit cobras blow.
king khan & his shrines are worth finding. i don't think they have a u.s. label, the stuff i have is on the sounds of subterrania label. search it out, it's good.

THIS BAND RULES LIVE
― francisF, Thursday, 7 June 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)
ps they live in montréal
― francisF, Thursday, 7 June 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)
no, they've lived in berlin for the past two years. khan has been there longer (it's where his daughter lives) and mark moved a few months later.

Love these guys, but this new King Khan album sounds like fake Dirtbombs. Not digging it on first listen AT ALL

What, the greatest hits? Is that a joke?
― Reatards Unite, Sunday, 18 May 2008 00:48 (seventeen years ago)
I'm talking about the Supreme Genius of King Khan and The Shrines thing on Vice that's coming out.
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 18 May 2008 02:29 (seventeen years ago)
That's the greatest hits compilation.
― Reatards Unite, Sunday, 18 May 2008 14:49 (seventeen years ago)
And by "greatest hits" I mean career-spanning thing since they technically don't have any "hits"
― Reatards Unite, Sunday, 18 May 2008 14:56 (seventeen years ago)
Really, Flying Assholes, you don't like the Shrines stuff??? I'm surprized, 'cuz that Supreme Genius... comp just fucking RULES. Does a damn fine job of culling key tracks from albums that all pretty much rule on their own. Doesn't sound a damn thing like "fake Dirtbombs", except that it draws influences from all kinds of bygone rock/soul/R&B genres. I can see how folks into the more garagey King Khan & BBQ/Mark Sultan stuff might be put off by the slickness, but SO MANY GREAT SONGS!
Tracks on The Supreme Genius... are almost all drawn from two King Khan & the Shrines LPs: What Is?! and Three Hairs and You're Mine (five and six songs respectively). Those're rounded out with the debut single, two tracks off an album called Mr. Supernatural, one of the better tunes from the Dirtbombs split, and a song from the Spread Your Love...Like Peanut Butter EP.
Search: What Is?! - The best of the three KK&Shrines records I've got. Tons of variety, catchy tunes, great production. Three Hairs and You're Mine - Maybe just a tiny cut below What Is? Maybe not. Fantastic either way. Shrines/Dirtbombs split LP - A decent-but-not-great record on which each band demonstrates just how little they sound like the other.

Anyone know when this thing (the Supreme Genius comp) is actually due?
― contenderizer, Monday, 19 May 2008 15:08 (seventeen years ago)
June 17 according to Vice

is there any difference i quality/sound/members between the Shrines and the BBQ show? new to King Khan...
― chinchillas they can fit on gorillas, Friday, 30 May 2008 04:32 (seventeen years ago)
*difference in
I've discovered I strongly prefer BBQ solo to King Khan solo
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Friday, 30 May 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)
The Shrines good live? I'm more of a KK+BBQ fan, but may try to catch them in a couple weeks if it works with my schedule. Youtube clips were kind of "meh".
― Reatards Unite, Friday, 6 June 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)
the interview he gave to pfrk is awesome. gotta love this fuy (esp if you also saw him live)

the end of kkbbq? but, to quote suzi quatro, what a way to die:http://www.thedailyswarm.com/swarm/king-khan-vs-sydneys-opera-house-starring-lou-reed-laurie-anderson-rubber-snakes-chinese-food-tai-chi-and-demise-king-khan-bbq-show/

jeez, what a nightmare. sounds like about the worst artistic experience imaginable, even with the little ray of light at the end. plus no more kk+bbq?!? god, say it ain't so. saw the fabulous shrines a month or so back and it was wonderful, inspirational, a total blast. suppose the lesson = "when they tell you not to throw the snake, don't throw the guitar."

Everything I've heard by KK so far I've liked. Tremendous voice, crunchy garage-o-delibilly with a pinch of off-the-wall exotica for good measure. Recommended.

Idle No More album is little more polished
― curmudgeon, Monday, 30 May 2016 02:12 (nine years ago)
That's a King Khan & the Shrines one; not the reunited King Khan & BBQ Show
― curmudgeon, Monday, 30 May 2016 02:14 (nine years ago)
one of their songs (Love You So) is huge on TikTok right now, not sure how that happened
― na (NA), Saturday, 19 March 2022 14:48 (three years ago)
it’s been used in 4.5 million TikToks so far?!
it’s not a meme or consistent theme or anything, just everyone is using it as background music
― na (NA), Saturday, 19 March 2022 14:49 (three years ago)
I hadn’t seen “Drop” in a long time and now wish I’d voted for it. Seems kinda proto-Jackass now too.
