Inspired by the "NME's 10 Most Influential Bands/Artists" thread. And yes, that list is crap.

Indeed

I shudder to think how much worse this year's list would be.

Top 132,785,723 lists are alright - as long as they're presented in random order.

Naw, you have to have some semblance of order. Rank them based on the shoe size of the lead singer. Or the cup size of their most Zaftig female back-up singer.

I have no problem with Top Ten lists whatsoever. In fact, I think I'm going to write a post about the lists I'd like to have if I were stranded on a desert island...

Been there. Done those.
I just saw the list of "Cool" records in the most recent Rolling Stone. (Yes, I read it. No, I'm not proud of it.) and I have to say its nowhere near as bad as the list in Spin from last month.

Hey, LC is back! I hope you are catching up on all the Rock threads.

Yep. Returned from Limbo. Upgraded my system (Thats why you can read my posts 20% faster than before!) and had to go on a futile quest to find a modem that works with my extraterrestrial phoneline.

eight years pass...

This one looks interesting to me. Has it been linked to before? Some of the usual suspects are here, but consider how close to the bottom of the list some of them are appearing:

I don't see why being different from the usual canon is such a big issue at all.

Again, for the 1000th time, the albums that are in the "canon" are there for a reason. They are probably there because they are better than other albums.

So, if you want to help people discover other stuff than the usual suspects, then it would be a lot more fair just leaving the entire canon out of the list rather than having "Sgt. Pepper" and "Sticky Fingers" in the bottom 10 of the 1000. Because, obviously, they are great albums and pretending otherwise is just pathetic. But if people already know and love those albums, and want more stuff to check out, then leaving them out is a good idea. Thus, I find a Top 1000 a good idea, because then the typical canon may be the top 100-200, and the next 800 may be less familiar stuff that is still also good.
