Best Song on Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours"

Another very difficult one...I want so much to vote "Second Hand News". Ultimately, though, I'm going with "You Make Loving Fun"...the clavinet,
Christine's warm chorus with the spacious backing vox, the final "You Make Loving Fun" ending.

Of course, odds are on "The Chain", "Go Your Own Way", or "Dreams" for scooping up the win...

GYOW

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 7 June 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

I have to say, "Don't Stop" is another favorite (though I've always felt it should have moved a bit faster than it does).

Joe, Thursday, 7 June 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

I love every song on this album and would normally pick GYOW as my favorite, but the older I get and the more I realize what an asset Christine was "Songbird" cuts deepest.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

no way i'm going to choose between second hand news, never going back again, go your own way, the chain and gold dust woman, and you can't make me!

fact checking cuz, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

Second Hand News pls!

Groke, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

songbird

creme1, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

I think I have to vote for Dreams for the drum and bass sound

mizzell, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

destroy the eva cassidy version though

creme1, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

Don't

Stop

blueski, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

Go Your Own Way.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

(xpost)>> Dreams for the drum and bass sound.

OTM. I worked above a restaurant the year this came out, and come closing time the staff would crank this on the jukebox so loud that the drum and bass came up through the floorboards. Mick and John (and the production) on this are flawless.

That said, I think it's still GYOW for me. Apples and oranges, though.

Dan Peterson, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

really hard to choose, but i went for "never going back again."

ian, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

Including "Silver Springs" is unfair a) because it's only been a proper inclusion for 3 or 4 years and b) it makes deciding my favorite even harder.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 7 June 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

Go Your Own Way. One of my fave singles ever.

ellaguru, Thursday, 7 June 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

"Gold Dust Woman"--a perfect ending to a near-perfect album.

JN$OT, Thursday, 7 June 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

"Silver Springs"

matt2, Thursday, 7 June 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

cheater!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 7 June 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

"Never Going Back Again" 4 eva

Dominique, Thursday, 7 June 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

Bubba kind of ruined Don't Stop for me.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 7 June 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not a big Stevie Nicks fan, but "Gold Dust Woman" just has a mood to it. It's not as spectacular as "Go Your Own Way," but it gets under one's skin like no other song on the record.

The Deacon, Thursday, 7 June 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

Wow-- I find it somewhat shocking that people who are really into music like this album. I always associate Fleetwood Mac with soulless, faceless, highly produced AM radio drivel. Have I been misguided for so long??

Richard Wood Johnson, Thursday, 7 June 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

obvious troll

i vote dreams, with silver springs a strong second.

Frogman Henry, Thursday, 7 June 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

I assume that people who are really "into" music actually recognize good music when they hear it.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 7 June 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, whatta buzz killer. (And misinformed too: they get WAY more play on the FM stations!)

I choose "Never Going Back Again", such a pristine little miniature.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 7 June 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

Finally a poll I care about. This one was really tough, but I voted for Second Hand News (It could just as easily been Chain or I Don't Want to Know.)

I know, right?, Thursday, 7 June 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

I always associate Fleetwood Mac with soulless, faceless, highly produced AM radio drivel. Have I been misguided for so long??

actually, I'm not sure this is intentional trolling -- both my parents think this, and they're not uniformly allergic to "good" music. I think there is a certain sect of people (esp those who had to live with FM being mega stars) who probably do think the record and the band are pretty much worthless and hollow.

Dominique, Thursday, 7 June 2007 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

But are obviously wrong.

I know, right?, Thursday, 7 June 2007 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

just saying is all

Dominique, Thursday, 7 June 2007 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

I know, I know...

I know, right?, Thursday, 7 June 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

"You Make Loving Fun"!

DavidM, Thursday, 7 June 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

never going back again!

alexei, Thursday, 7 June 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

I went for Gold Dust Woman, but this was stupid hard.

kenan, Thursday, 7 June 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

when i told my dad that Fleetwood Mac was becoming my favorite band, he looked straight at me and said, maybe slightly less than half jokingly, "I don't even know who you are anymore".
I voted Songbird. Primarily because a couple of my best friends think Rumours is one of the best albums ever EXCEPT for Songbird, which "sucks". I've been trying to convince them for a couple years now that it's the heart of the album to no avail. whatever.

methanietanner, Friday, 8 June 2007 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

I voted "Silver Springs" with "Second Hand News" a tad behind.

van smack, Friday, 8 June 2007 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

No "Oh Daddy"s as of yet...

Joe, Friday, 8 June 2007 01:27 (eighteen years ago)

granted, I suppose (for me that's the weakest track).

Joe, Friday, 8 June 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

"world turning" :D

tricky, Friday, 8 June 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

The 1-2-3 of "Second Hand News," "Dreams," and "Never Going Back Again" is kind of unstoppable.

kenan, Friday, 8 June 2007 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

Wow-- I find it somewhat shocking that people who are really into music like this album. I always associate Fleetwood Mac with soulless, faceless, highly produced AM radio drivel. Have I been misguided for so long??

Kind of lame even for a troll, as associating FM w/soulless, faceless, highly produced AM radio drivel = I never heard anything they did before 1975, at the very least.

Anyway, Don't Stop, which even the Clinstones couldn't stop.

dlp9001, Friday, 8 June 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

"Dreams," but any given evening it could've been any of the other tracks.

Mordechai Shinefield, Friday, 8 June 2007 02:57 (eighteen years ago)

I think I'll go with 'Dreams' but I'm sad that on one is cheering for 'The Chain', that breakdown before the coda is probably the best moment on the whole album.

baaderonixx, Friday, 8 June 2007 08:28 (eighteen years ago)

that was the theme for televised motorracing for many years in the uk.

Frogman Henry, Friday, 8 June 2007 08:31 (eighteen years ago)

What the flip is "Silver Springs?"

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 8 June 2007 08:36 (eighteen years ago)

My question exactly, it is not on my vinyl (sorry, my mam's vinyl) copy of this. Is it the same as that Buckingham Nicks song?

I know, right?, Friday, 8 June 2007 10:38 (eighteen years ago)

Go Your Own Way - easy.

SeekAltRoute, Friday, 8 June 2007 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

from wikipedia:
The track "Silver Springs" was released as a B-side to "Don't Stop" and "Go Your Own Way". The song, originally intended for release on the LP, was not included because of its length. The shorter Nicks song "I Don't Want to Know" was its replacement. The standard version of Rumours now includes "Silver Springs"

van smack, Friday, 8 June 2007 12:20 (eighteen years ago)

and nicks was pissed at the band for both removing "silver springs' and adding "i don't want to know."

fact checking cuz, Friday, 8 June 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

Lindsay's "Bow bow bow bow bow" vocal on "Secondhand News" is the best thing ever.

I might ultimately plump for "You Make Loving Fun" but it's so hard with this album.

Tim F, Friday, 8 June 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

"The Chain" and not just because of...

I Don't Want to Know

The Chain, partly because it's the only thing I can play on a guitar.

dermoth, Friday, 15 June 2007 03:47 (eighteen years ago)

i voted for i don't know want to know

river wolf, Friday, 15 June 2007 04:24 (eighteen years ago)

"GYOW" but mostly cos that scene with it in Casino when there's that sweeping shot of the desert and they're driving made me realise how great FM were. Too hard to pick properly, nearly anything on this is a sentimental fav and musically it's so good

President Evil, Friday, 15 June 2007 06:20 (eighteen years ago)

hey, did anyone notice how the writing on the back of the lp is in comic sans?

creme1, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Damn, only six votes.

van smack, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

for some reason, this is a total surprise, but..

Of course, odds are on "The Chain", "Go Your Own Way", or "Dreams" for scooping up the win...

...mentioning odds-on favorites in the original post should be outlawed!!

Dominique, Saturday, 16 June 2007 00:44 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry... :)

kenan, Saturday, 16 June 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

I read that in a George Costanza voice

van smack, Saturday, 16 June 2007 01:43 (eighteen years ago)

i love every song on this record, but surprised to see the chain so high and don't stop so low. have the clintons ruined it for everyone?

electricsound, Saturday, 16 June 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

the chain does deserve props for being one of mick'n'john's few songwriting credits and keeping them in blow and headscarves for another day

electricsound, Saturday, 16 June 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

I read that in a George Costanza voice

You get me.

kenan, Saturday, 16 June 2007 02:27 (eighteen years ago)

I feel sorry for "Oh Daddy", which I think is a great track, so doomy!

That said if I was honest I'd admit that it wasn't anywhere near my favourite song on the album.

This is the problem with these Fleetwood Mac polls. They're kind of guilt inducing!

Tim F, Saturday, 16 June 2007 03:45 (eighteen years ago)

eleven years pass...

I've listened to quite a few episodes of the Song Exploder podcast, and this episode where Lindsay Buckingham breaks down "Go Your Own Way" is easily the most interesting one I've heard:
http://songexploder.net/fleetwood-mac

He plays the demo version, isolates each singer on backing vocals, talks about how he couldn't get over Stevie, and overall sounds like much less of an egomaniac than I had assumed he was.

enochroot, Wednesday, 12 December 2018 00:51 (six years ago)

Tested bass amp at band practice tonight with iconic breakdown riff from “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac.

Dan Darragh not kidding: “That’s Big Black, right?!”

i had a hazy memory of this album being polled and "you make loving fun" winning. it's my pick, anyway. but i kinda dug the world in my head where that had quietly become the consensus favorite among us ILM types.

|Restore| |Restart| |Quit| (Doctor Casino), Wednesday, 12 December 2018 13:52 (six years ago)

You're not wrong, "You Make Loving Fun" finished second in the other poll: How can it be that we have never polled RUMOURS by Fleetwood Mac?!

maximum waste and minimum joy (oder doch?), Wednesday, 12 December 2018 14:05 (six years ago)

Toss up between several songs for me (obviously), but really surprised to see GYOW winning it. One of the least interesting songs on the album IMO

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 13 December 2018 14:19 (six years ago)

"Dreams" and "You Make Loving fun" are the only songs I really like on this album.
(I also like "Silver Springs" but it's not on the original album)
I'm much more of a Tusk person !

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 13 December 2018 16:02 (six years ago)

That I enjoy this whole record goes without saying, yet 'You Make Loving Fun' is still my favourite track on this album by miles.

am i wrong in remembering a moment in one of those 60 minute classic albums programs where lindsey plays the backing tracks to "gold dust woman"? i remember being really charmed at the bit of wickedness placed into the song and it helped revive my interest in that era of the band years back.

"Dreams" slaps, et al.

Get the point? Good, let's dance with nunchaku. (Eric H.), Saturday, 10 October 2020 15:07 (five years ago)

Before my time here. My #1 would be the B-side, "Landslide." So that doesn't count. Probably "Silver Springs," but I still like "Go Your Own Way" and "Dreams" a lot. Not "Don't Stop." In high school, we ran onto the court to "Don't Stop," picked by the coach. (He later served as Clinton's campaign manager, I believe.) I kept asking if we could switch to Aerosmith's "Back in the Saddle." I remember running out to that at least once, so I had some measure of success.

So many covers of tunes from Rumors. I like Hole's take on Gold Dust Woman.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:40 (five years ago)

It is...not sure why I thought it--did it ever turn up as a B-side?

clemenza, Saturday, 10 October 2020 20:41 (five years ago)

I believe “silver spring” was a bside that was inserted into Rumours when the CD came out?

brimstead, Saturday, 10 October 2020 20:55 (five years ago)

That's it then, I'm getting the two mixed up. It was "Silver Springs" I discovered years later.

clemenza, Saturday, 10 October 2020 21:03 (five years ago)

Silver Springs was left off the album because the overall length (at that time) would have meant sacrificing the bass response by narrowing the grooves.

Of course on CD that doesn't matter so it was restored.

nonsensei (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 10 October 2020 21:11 (five years ago)
