Indie circa 1984:

(song starts @ 1:30)
This was on the radio all the time for a few months when it was current, then it just vanished. I haven't heard it in over 10yrs, maybe 15. I remember watching this on "The Tube" when it was broadcast, they had Ken Russell on, & he commented favourably on the video after they showed it. I'm glad I still like it! It's way weirder than I remember, a genuine oddball classic, like Wild Man Fischer or the fish head song. Best thing in the clip is the drummer's weird steez.

A fair few Cravats/DCL/Very Things fans round these parts, IIRC.
― aldo, Friday, 8 June 2007 11:29 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, like me! I found the aforementioned album for a dollar last year amidst a bunch of other crappy vinyl.
New double CD of Cravats reissue material came out last year, we were discussing it on a reissue thread iirc.

I heard this again about 2 or 3 years ago and was also surprised how weird it was. Anything else good by these guys?
― everything, Friday, 8 June 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)
Yes, all of it. I prefer Bushes Scream to Motortown/Let's Go Out, but it's only a preference. The Cravats reissue mentioned above isn't as complete as it could be but is great.

Oh yeah, I remember that Motortown song now. Going to have to investigate these guys some more. And I've never heard the Cravats.

1st TVT album is a masterpiece of brit-psych. Nice to know dear old Ken dug the video.
Singer Shend is the MC of a regular jazz/swing night in Brighton. Something I only found out after visiting town, considering the club and opting not to go. Next time.
Cravats/Very Things reunions haven't been ruled out, so watch the skies!

DCL Locomotive EP is also very good. A lot of this stuff showed up on MP3 blogs about 6 months back.
Search: "Bushes Scream" LP, The Cravats "Colossal Tunes Out" LP or new anthology. There is also a Very Things CD that compiles some singles including their 1st one (which is also very good).

I did get "This is motortown" at the time.
It's good, but it's not "Mummy you're a wreck" or bushes..
― Mark G, Friday, 8 June 2007 22:56 (eighteen years ago)
Oh fucking fantastic, they're on You Tube too?! God, you can find almost anything on You Tube can't you? I mean sometimes I wonder why I bother to do anything else but sit like a vegetable in front of that site.
I bought Motortown when I was getting into these guys a few years ago and I really didn't dig it. I'd sell it, even.

I had the 12" of "Let's Go Out". oh, how I loved it

OH MY GOD. The clip which opens this thread...just makes me feel so bad for all the young kids. Surrender now to 80's music. Those poor souls have no idea what they're missing. NO idea. I'm not meaning to be trite or superior, I just think it's sad. That is a piece of history that should live on. Wow.

It's almost like we need a TS: Stump vs. Very Things thread, but Very Things will win from the most pleasant brand of weirdness.
― Bimble, Saturday, 9 June 2007 07:18 (eighteen years ago)
Ah, I see, it's one of those nights when I have to be patient for the Brits to wake up. Ah well. I haven't even finished my beer, here. Let me know when you're awake, yo.

OK, just about coming round in the UK now . .
They were going to make a 3-D film for their version of Nervous Norvous 'Transfusion'. I remember reading about this in the NME(or maybe even Snouds) and they were shown with puppets constructed for the shoot.
I thnik things went pear-shaped with the record company shortly thereafter. Anyone seen the film, or know if it was actually completed?
― Soukesian, Saturday, 9 June 2007 08:19 (eighteen years ago)
I think I told this story on another thread, but I remember a roomful of noisily fucked-up people gradually falling into awed silence as TVT's 'information' played out in the background. Track ends with the monologue from 'It came from outer space': "Sometimes the wind gets in the wires . ." Magical stuff!
― Soukesian, Saturday, 9 June 2007 08:32 (eighteen years ago)
NOT WITH MY ACCEPTANCE. Oh wait I haven't heard Very Things yet.

Then by all means, please refer to the video at the very top of this thread.

Have done now and am intrigued! What is It's a Drug, It's a Drug, wot I found on eMusic? It says from 1993 -- late album? compilation? what?
(I see how you can connect them with Stump, esp in the vocal manner(isms))
― anatol_merklich, Saturday, 9 June 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)
Actually I think that's a compilation but I can't remember now and I'm too drunk to feel like looking it up.
― Bimble, Saturday, 9 June 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)
I would have to side w/Stump in that contest, based on the information I have at present
― Morley Timmons, Saturday, 9 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)
Well, I don't hold it against anyone if they choose Stump.
But you know...I've just found my CD of "It's A Drug" by accident while looking for stuff by another artist, and I suddenly have this feeling I was wrong, that it isn't really a compilation.
― Bimble, Saturday, 9 June 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)
no, it is - has the "Mummy You're A Wreck" single plus the first one and some unreleased stuff iirc.
― sleeve, Sunday, 10 June 2007 02:18 (eighteen years ago)
k k then I'll be downloading it when my next availables come around, I think. Even more intrigued than above by this interrupted sequence of titles: #2 "Mummy You're a Wreck" #3 "When Father Papered the Parlour" #13 "When Mummy Papered the Wreck"
