Anybody seen this? Between Sheik doing this and Glen Hansard of the Frames onscreen in the sorta musical Once do we have a trend?

Wait, what exactly is the trend?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 June 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

My wife saw this and said it was the worst fucking thing she's ever seen, and she's a Sondheim fan.

Hey, if it keeps them off the radio. Oh wait.

There could be a performance on the Tonys (going on right now on tv here in the US East Coast) although the songs supposedly deal lyrically with sex, abortion, and suicide, so that may not be pleasant enough for the tv network. I am curious about the show although yea, Ned & company may be right (I liked the movie Once even if some of Hansgard's troubador renderings got a little samey). Maybe I should have just gone to a friend's and watched "The Sopranos" on HBO, or gone out and seen Electrelane or Eddie Palmieri instead of contemplating this.

We're home watching (my son researching his future career don't ya know), but no SA number yet.

shut up no one asked you

and "Barely Breathing" was on at the ice cream store today, and it is better than i remembered!

Spurs are crushing Cleveland in basketball so I turned the Tonys back on. The director of SA made some mention about how folks this SA is changing and revitalizing musicals. They finally had a cast performance number from it--kinda emo meets standard musical. SA also won for best musical.

"think" not "this"

I never saw "Rent" which I guess was the last musical that was supposed to change things. I never saw movie musicals "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" (1964, 91 minutes, in French with subtitles)or "The American Astronaut" (2001, 91 minutes) which were supposed to be different from the norm (but not necessarily innovative).

There was one number late in the program, but my head's still reeling from the Scott Walker movie, so I didn't pay lots of attention

I loved this soundtrack, though I haven't gotten to see the show. I raved a bit about it on the Teenpop thread.

Mordechai Shinefield, Monday, 11 June 2007 07:06 (eighteen years ago)

we saw the show back in january and thought it was awersome. never been much on musicales myself but SA achieved that rare thing, an unforced fusion between rock/pop energy and theatrical plot & advancement. and the history of the play itself -- written 100 years ago and quite the scandal at the time -- only adds to the fun. the only other production I've seen that really works this rock/theatre connection was Hedwig & the Angry Inch, which of course was both more raunchy and rocking.

that said, I haven't listened to the soundtrack tho my wife put it on her ipod and plays it alot.

"Rent" is the opposite of "Spring Awakening" AFAIC, a travesty. and "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. And while I'm no Sondheim expert I will add that last year's revival of Sweeney Todd opened my eyes to his genius, hands down the best thing I've ever seen on stage, complex and entertaining.

recently we went to see an off bway musical called In The Heights which is destined for bway soon. it's about the travails of a group of young folks in new york's dominican neighborhood Washington Heights and it's a gas: somewhat corny plot-wise but absolutely exuberant in terms of music performances production etc. here's hoping it's a big hit.

maybe this is a sign of getting old, getting into theatre? only problem is the tix are outrageous though I guess concerts are too these days.

m coleman, Monday, 11 June 2007 10:06 (eighteen years ago)

Yes to the outrageous ticket prices for theatre and big concerts...

curmudgeon, Monday, 11 June 2007 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

Every time I hear an audioclip[ of SA, sounds abominable. Broadway as usual discovering pop styles 10-15 years late.

"The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" is one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

OK, no need to pay m coleman any heed ever.

You don't have to agree with everyone on everything.

Yep, now I see on Amazon that the soundtrack came out in December 2006. I had quickly looked for it at allmusic and did not see it.
