They've been recommended to me by a friend and are playing at a pub round the corner from my house in may. What are they like? Japanese psych rock has been mentioned in connection with them.

i saw an edited feature profile on them on MTV News the other night (where i get all my crucial info)... the slant was "real rock" but all i could think was "real stupid" in their tight black clothes and "rock n roll" haircuts... through the interviews one can tell that their main priorities are 1) chicks and 2) dough, which YES is fair enough but lord they don't make it look very entertaining.

i hyped myself up after reading about them. downloaded both albums and was turned off after about ten minutes. i enjoyed their instrumental song and that was it.

Has anyone done a side by side comparison of their new cover art with the first Grand Funk album? Not a parody, not a spoof, just a direct ripoff, back cover included. I don't understand.

i can explain that.

they fucking suck.

Maybe it's an homage. (a la London Calling / that Elvis cover). Or Soul Asylum's Clam Dip and Other Delights.

nickn, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe... but both those covers you mention somehow toyed with the originials, and by doing so they made some kind of statement, even if it was of dubious substance (Soul Asylum). With this one, it seems more a case of "Wow, that's a cool cover... let's make ours look like that." If it's an homage, it's an homage to a fairly unsuccessful, cruddy sounding record.

love the record. saw the piece on MTV about them and about fell out of my chair laughing at how dorky they came off. rock does not make you cool. unless you're prince.

Brock K., Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But is the dorky look part of their shtick? I gotta believe a band that calls itself the Mooney Suzuki has some kind of perspective on rock history. I must confess I've neither seen nor heard them.

Kind of the same thing with Andrew WK, maybe he's just realized the rock as hair shirt penance is about to swing back to party hearty, dude, and he's positioning hinmself to ride it all the way.

Brock it was Spinal Tap thru and thru weren't it? "yeah.. it's called, like, electric sweat, yeah"
