Record Store Clerk Idol

On the RIP mister cd... thread, someone saw a load of potential Record Store clerks for the new Rough Trade shop. If there was a Record Clerk Store Idol what would Simon Cowell be looking for? What tasks would they be given, who'd be thrown out straight away?

Real-life store-clerk wheat-from-chaff stuff seems to come down to some serious basics:

1. can you even remotely be trusted with things like keys and bank envelopes
2. do you smell okay
3. are you often drunk / on drugs at work
4. will you show up like within 2 hours of when you're expected, and if you don't, will we be able to reach you on a non-disconnected phone line to tell you to get your ass in here
5. do you do any work whatsoever

and mostly importantly

6. is the music you play in the store annoying in a cool way, or annoying in an annoying way

Oh also

7. do you seriously plan on working here for long enough for us to bother hiring you, and
8. if "yes," then what's wrong with you that we can't tell right now?

(not that all of this stuff isn't equally applicable to any store-service workers, from waiters to boutique employees -- I actually think record-store clerks get a bad rap and are usually reasonably hardworking, knowledgable, and have a genuine desire to be friendly and helpful) (unless you suck)

1. ability to lift 40-50 lb boxes regularly.
2. willingness to get hands grubby
3. no dust allergies
4. enjoyment of cheeseburgers
5. knows that tarkus does not get filed under "Rock T"
6. can tell apart composer and conductor on classical LP sleeves
7. cash-register knowledge; simple math.
8. does not lose pens
9. does not take shit from europeans who wish to haggle
10. can grade LPs
