This was hard. I had to go for God Ween Satan. I don't know if its the best but it is the one I reach for the most when I'm in a Ween mood.

James, Monday, 11 June 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

man, i just saw these assholes live last night. it was brown. way brown.

Emily Bjurnhjam, Monday, 11 June 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

I think people should use the intervening thread time to analyze and explain Ween lyrics, starting with the following:

When I was younger, my mama told me
She said, "Gener, I want to smell it"
And when she smelled it, and it was smelly
She said, "Lordy lordy lord, I'm coming home"

nabisco, Monday, 11 June 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

Analysis: Ween smokes a lot of pot.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 11 June 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

Ween is in big trouble dudes.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 11 June 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

You forgot:

Prime 5
Erika Peterson's Flaming Crib Death
Live At Stubb's
Live In Toronto
All Request Live

Z-Rock Hawaii with the Boredomes probably deserves to be there too.

But the correct answer is The Pod.

flamingrev, Monday, 11 June 2007 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

Ween is a classic case of a "diminishing returns" band.

GodWeenSatan > The Pod >>>> Pure Guava >>>>>>>>>>>>> everything that came later

o. nate, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

prediction: you will die at the age of 74 when an accident in a fondue restaurant leaves you drowning in a scalding, molten mixture of CHOCOLATE AND CHEESE

nabisco, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 00:58 (eighteen years ago)

ween is one of the very few bands where i can honestly say that i like every single one of their albums. however, the pod and chocolate cheese are probably the best of the best.

Emily Bjurnhjam, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 01:06 (eighteen years ago)

What's the album with ''Push The Little Daisies (and Make Them Come Up)''? It's got to be that one.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 12 June 2007 02:00 (eighteen years ago)

God Ween Satan without question, especially the reissue w/the beefed up sound. Agree w/O. Nate, though I have a soft spot for White Pepper.

dlp9001, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 02:15 (eighteen years ago)

White Pepper has its moments - it might be the best of their post-Guava albums - maybe even as good as Guava, though that kind of screws up my "diminishing returns" theory a bit.

o. nate, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 02:45 (eighteen years ago)

The Mollusk. Or 12 Golden Country Greats, strangely.

joygoat, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 06:38 (eighteen years ago)

Gold: Pure Guava
Silver: GodWeenSatan: The Oneness
Bronze: (tie!) Chocolate And Cheese & The Pod

nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 07:30 (eighteen years ago)

You forgot:

Prime 5
Erika Peterson's Flaming Crib Death
Live At Stubb's
Live In Toronto
All Request Live

Z-Rock Hawaii with the Boredomes probably deserves to be there too.

I decided to not include the live albums, except for Painting The Town Brown because it was a comp. I haven't heard of Prime 5 or Flaming Crib Death. You are definitely right about Z-Rock. I'm sure some people would have voted for that.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

Oh dip, I also forgot "Craters Of The Sac," although most of those songs are on Shinola Vol 1.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

In descending order, the ones that I've actually heard:

GodWeenSatan: The Oneness
The Pod
The Mollusk
Chocolate And Cheese
Pure Guava
White Pepper
12 Golden Country Greats
Paintin' The Town Brown
Shinola, Vol 1
Quebec

Boo-ya.

J, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

early Ween discography:

1986: The Crucial Squeegie Lip

1987: Axis: Bold As Boognish

1987: Erica Peterson's Flaming Crib Death, has some songs from previous albums as well as new songs. If you can find this for download, the already released songs are better sound quality from this source.

1987: Synthetic Socks. Geaner solo album that Deaner plays on a little bit. Out of all of their early stuff, this may be the easiest to listen to.

1988: The Live Brain Wedgie/WAD Excerpts. Side A is live versions of previously released tracks, side B is all new (although most of these songs wound up being rerecorded and released on GodWeenSatan).

1989: Prime 5. A "greatest hits" that has a few new songs.

The Craters Of The Sac songs are kind of different versions. They've been remixed and overdubbed and edited for Shinola. I think the original Monique The Freak was twice as long.

I voted for The Pod, but I really like all of their official albums equally. When I had only heard a couple of Ween albums, I thought they were just okay, but as I gathered more reference points I appreciated them more and more. They're probably my very favorite band at the moment. Their ugly, jokey side gets a lot of attentions, but their discography has a lot of tender, beautiful moments as well.

flamingrev, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

I think the original Monique The Freak was twice as long.

Correct, and "Big Fat Fuck" was originally something like 9 minutes.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

For a long time, Quebec was my least favorite. It took awhile to grow on me, but I love it now. Originally the tracklisting was pretty different. I can't remember what it was, but it reflected the fact that this is Geaner's "issues" album more. Divorce, drug addiction, etc.

flamingrev, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

Best pure Ween is godweensatan, for me but I listen mostly to All Request Live.

christoff, Thursday, 14 June 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

These guys have even worse album titles than the Melvins,

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 14 June 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

haha, I like the album titles!!

billstevejim, Thursday, 14 June 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Sunday, 17 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Monday, 18 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, a lot more people love GWS than I thought. I totally would have expected the results of GWS and Pure Guava to be reversed, and I'm actually kind of sad Pure Guava recieved such low numbers, but seeing as how none of the official full-lengths recieved less than 2 votes, I'm actually very happy with this. Thanks everyone. !!!

billstevejim, Monday, 18 June 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

haha I voted The Mollusk because I didn't think it would win!

marmotwolof, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

Jesus, who voted for "Quebec", it's shit

Tom D., Tuesday, 19 June 2007 09:16 (eighteen years ago)

I love Quebec!! "Chocolate Town"!!!!

billstevejim, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

I cannot believe that "The Pod" only received 3 votes. It is clearly the brownest.

Davey D, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

Holy God is the new EP bad. And this is coming from probably ILX's biggest Ween fan.

Reatards Unite, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

OMG NO! The new EP is one million different kinds of awesome!

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

well one thing I can say about new Ween is I still have no idea what the shit's gonna sound like until I hear it, like White Pepper had a song on some Steely Dan shit and then you put on Quebec and it's Motorhead. What's the new one like?

marmotwolof, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

The title track of the new ep is totally GAYTASTIC Pet Shop Boys/Erasure-style big dancefloor awesomeness. The rest is typical half-baked low-concept Ween genre hopping, but better than usual.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha sold

"Friends," the title track of the EP was mixed by Reinhard Raith, of "Crazy Frog" fame. Ween sent files back & forth to germany for the past few months. He captured exactly what ween was looking for.

King Billy was mixed by King Jammy in Jamaica. He had his crew put down some of the rhythm tracks, too.

Friends: Gayed out euro-dico. Think Cher's "Believe" covered by Erasure.
Put The Hammer Down: Deaner sings. Squelchy, electronic song about a gay junkie living on the streets.
King Billy: reggae. Very good.
Light Me Up: The best song here. If Miami Vice were a musical, this would be the song sung by the south american drug dealer before getting killed by Don Johnson.
Slow Down Boy: Tears For Fears, Morrisey sounding song about a gay love affair gone wrong.

flamingrev, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

Really? I thought "Slow Down Boy" was vintage low-key Bowie.

That's cool about "Friends," though. Raith got it perfect.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

Didn't get a chance to vote but I concur on the Mollusk. There's so many bands now trying to capture that authentic early 70s sound, especially the English folk/prog, and Ween not only nailed it better than the rest of the 'serious' sycophants they did it with a parody subtext.

I also concur that they've never recorded a duff record. Though 12 Golden Country Greats wasn't all that hot, still the concept was solid and it had a few songs (Piss Up A Rope).
