was he working or just rocking out? My boy J's fiancee used to work for him as an associate producer and editor.
also, did you happen to catch Charlie Louvin? he played an outdoor gig here recently and was on fire. you know, for a really old dude.
― will, Friday, 15 June 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)
did not see charlie, wonder if he has played yet. i just watched uncle earl and they were great! they can all do everything. play everything, and yodel, and buck dance. they rule.
d.a. was showing monterey pop and talking about it, in a rumpled linen suit. asked "which of you films would you most want to stand for you?" he said "blow em all up."

― gr8080, Saturday, 16 June 2007 00:54 (eighteen years ago)
well today's update is that hot chip in a complete non-shocker are hogging EVERY FREE IPOD.
there was a sign up sheet for them and you had to write what band you were in beside your name and it was like HOT CHIP HOT CHIP HOT CHIP HOT CHIP HOT CHIP HOT CHIP HOT CHIP
as if they need a fucking ipod, let alone all of the ipods. So they had me sign up anyway and were like "we'll email one to you." ?????
also, ?uestlove whining and having a baby fit over the free beer selection (puhLEEZE) john paul jones scoring free $250 sunglasses lewis black NEVER LEAVES THE ARTISTS HOSPITALITY BAR david cross hanging out with the black keys drummer, apparently bffs el-p hugs each sound man and crew member after a performance, very cute aes-rizzle is actually extremely hot in pers, and like 9 feet tall (and hangs out at the Garnier Fructis stand?!?!) dj shadow is mysterious! he disappears and then suddenly appears onstage! maybe it's just that no one knows what he actually looks like tortoise are OLD. nonshocker. they have the guy from 90 Day Men playing with them now. i recognized him from this, and asked "where you in 90 day men?" and all the torti loled. asked ziggy marley where he got his cigarettes and his entourage gasped
t00l were RIDICULOUS (in the best poss way), Maynard G. Krebs just made hippie jabs between every song, and bragged about being able to use soap in his air conditioned trailer. everyone cheered anyway, 90,000 people. why do hippies like t00l? it's such sinister sounding stuff. my friend chris says they just call that kind of thing "deep" or "heavy", and like to prove that they "can get into 'deep' stuff too."

i've seen them!!! they're in a plebian area
― roxymuzak, Saturday, 16 June 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)
the two most humiliating moments so far, aside from the hot chip ipod embargo, were definitely my nothing band being forced to do a "signing" at a table directly next to tom fucking morello, who had a giant snaking line going throughout the entirety of bonnaroo. of course we had ONE DUDE (far more embarassing than zero dudes) covered in tenderhooks paraphernalia and getting autographs on it. everyone in line acted like he was completely insane (he probably is). Then the Newbury Comics staff actually had to kick us out to make way for Brazilian Girls.
The other embarassing thing is this: my friend (who is also in a nothing band) was like "hey, they're giving out free tents to artists! go get one!" so i walk over there and ask for a tent and they also have these really nice bags. i ask for just the bag and the girl is like "oh, someone from your band already claimed yours actually." untrue, she just didn't want to give one to such a non-fame. and then she was all "YOU CAN HAVE A FREE SPIN MAGAZINE THOUGH." humiliating
did i mention we have to camp next to Wolfmother? talk about pricks. we basically have a feud going at this point. the guy with ridiculous pants and hair (is that all/both of them?) makes fun of constantly, because we think we are a band, and he is also in a band and wears long pants, or something. he's retarded, and i hate him.

holy fucking shit jim jarmusch is here. he is floating around artist's hospitality, being impeccably cool, making kings of leon look like steve urquell.

looking like a frosty delight!
last night my friend and i told john paul jones that he should stick to the mandolin and maybe he can make something of himself. he was visibly annoyed. my chum accused him of writing stairway, to which he denied responsibility. i complimented him on black dog, which he apparently did write, but his P.A. said "well, that wasn't very good either."
LOL

and JPJ was also complaining to his manager guy that he did not want to go see the police or even put in an appearance there, while the manager tried to coax him there.
also, lol @ pete yorn standing around artists hospitality hoping anyone recognizes him, ever.
you could see sting's DENTAL WORK frm the giant monitors on teh stage last night.

Ornette collapsed onstage mid-song, and no one knows yet if he is alright.
The idiotic members of the audience (most) clapped as he was carried offstage (as if something triumphant were happening). It was an affecting effective end of everything. The whole festival felt slammed shut for everyone sentient that was there.
― roxymuzak, Monday, 18 June 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)
Found this through google news:
Jazz legend Ornette Coleman suffered a medical emergency during his performance on the last night of Bonnaroo in the 'Something Else' Jazz Tent. Midway through a song, the innovative alto saxophonist collapsed on stage. According to his publicist, the incident is believed to be caused by heat exhaustion. Following the collapse, Coleman was alert alert and speaking, telling folks backstage that he wasn't suffering any symptoms prior to his performance. However, Coleman has been taken to a local hospital in Tennessee's Coffee County for further treatment.
Hopefully it's just as they say and he'll be ok.
― marmotwolof, Monday, 18 June 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)
Man, if there's anywhere I'd like to recover, it's Coffee County
― Hurting 2, Monday, 18 June 2007 03:16 (eighteen years ago)
i just got back. i saw roxy's band, they were good! (roxy's good on the vox and on the bass too.) i have no exciting backstage stories, since our backstage experience was confined to the guest areas. but as for the rest, it was mostly lots of fun except for seeing ornette collapse. he was playing a good strong set and a good number of the crowd seemed to be hanging in with him, like they got what he was doing, but then suddenly it was just...over. i'm really glad he's ok, but at the time it was really alarming. walking out of that tent through the dust clouds down to the big field where white stripes were playing felt sort of apocalyptic. of course after 4 days in the sun like that it's easy to feel apocalyptic.
what i could tell from the chatter, the big crowd-pleasers were rodrigo y gabriela, manu chao and tool. (why do hippies like tool? because of the lasers! awesome lasers.) the police sounded good, there was just the problem of having to look at the giant sting head on the jumbotron. his fundamental cheeseballness overwhelms even his best songs if you have to actually watch him sing them. lily allen was way better live than i expected, had a good tight band. the hold steady got people to pump fists at all the fist-pumping places in their big brucey songs. girl talk's set was great. (he was on before sasha/digweed; when he finished i went to bed.) the jazz tent was a nice touch, the cabaret tent too. i mean, it is what it is, a giant commercial enterprise and all, but there was a lot of good stuff.
― tipsy mothra, Monday, 18 June 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)
You should have said hi!
Yeah, I heard a lot of good about Manu Chao, too.
I agree with you about Ornette's collapse. It did feel somehow apocalyptic. You couldn't (or at least I couldn't) help but feel "I'm possibly witnessing something very imporant", and then feel a slight guilt about that thought because there is a man on stage that is still possibly not okay.
Marc Ribot maintained a turtle face throughout the Ornette situation.
The collapse definitely ruined my date with Jarmusch.

i saw smokin dave twice, they were great (the second time by accident, and it was so hot at first i thought i was hallucinating them). i also ran into todd a couple times just wandering the grounds, he was having a good time. pretty much every time i turned a corner i ran into somebody or other from knoxville.

Revive!
So, I'm heading to this thing this year. Anyone else?
For right now, I'm most excited about seeing the Bluegrass Allstars - Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Myer, Bryan Sutton and Luke Bulla. But I'm still working through the artist list.

I am mostly going for a chance to hang out with a bunch of friends from back east, and am somewhat disappointed by the lineup as a whole, but there are some promising entries.
Also - I like watching hippie chicks do the spinnies. Awesome.

I am pretty damn stoked, especially for The Tony Rice Unit, Del McCoury Band, and The David Grisman Quintet to get my acoustic jones fixed.
Also - Bruce, Snoop, wilco, Erykah Badu, and some group called Phish.
I will be dancing all weekend.

We’re ecstatic to announce a historic night of hip-hop, funk and R&B with a brand new SuperJam featuring Wu-Tang Clan founder and musical visionary The RZA who will perform along with Schoolboy Q, Earl Sweatshirt and Solange backed by funk supergroup Lettuce featuring DJ Jazzy Jeff and Chad Hugo of the Neptunes.
The other superjam sounds like a good time -- Jim James, John Oates, Zigaboo Modeliste, Larry Graham, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Cyro Baptista.
