deej, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

"Children's Story"'s a no-brainer, but I'm going with "Mona Lisa" to keep it interesting. I used to hear that on the old school midday mix on the radio like twice a week.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

this is actually a pretty hard one for me to be honest...real consistent album

deej, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

It's obviously "Children's Story" but a part of me wants to vote for "Lick The Balls".

HI DERE, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

Such a great album.

Children's Story.

B.L.A.M., Wednesday, 13 June 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

Children's Story will win this, but it was hard to pass up "Treat Her Like A Prostitute"

John Justen, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

Please do a The Ruler's Back poll next, Oilyrags. Cuz I soooo know my answer.

Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, I don't think I've ever heard that whole album. Hmmm...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder if maybe I should have put La-Di-Da-Di and The Show in this poll. I mean, obviously they're not on "Great Adventures" but still.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 14 June 2007 00:57 (eighteen years ago)

Mona Lisa!

R -- ravishing
I -- impress
C -- courageous; so careless
K -- for the kangols which Ive got
That I wear everyday and
Y -- why not?

dlp9001, Thursday, 14 June 2007 01:10 (eighteen years ago)

ARGH! I was just about to quite that part, but I guess I'll have to settle for "Great Scott! Are you a thief? It seems that you have a mouth full of gold teeth!" "Mona Lisa" ftw.

Treat Her Like a Prostitute vs. Two Way Street

Oilyrags, Thursday, 14 June 2007 12:11 (eighteen years ago)

I read an interview sometime back with slick rick where the interviewer asked him if "Indian Girl" was an allegory for how native americans were treated by the colonists. I think his response was "no, not really." Pretty funny.
I think "treat her like a prostitute" ranks up there among the great moments in late eighties/early nineties hip hop misogyny along with Too $hort's "Ain't nothin but a word to me." It's so wrong it's almost right, or if not right, at least hilarious.

Jrom, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

Real funny. The most mysogynistic song in the universe (about the joys of rape) from a complete jerk. Can I vote "he should suck one?"

humansuit, Thursday, 14 June 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

what song is about the joys of rape?

deej, Thursday, 14 June 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

Indian Girl baby.

humansuit, Thursday, 14 June 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

'joys'?

deej, Thursday, 14 June 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

i mean, no question that song is questionable, dont get me wrong

deej, Thursday, 14 June 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

Overstated on my part? Yeah. But such gleeful revelry around a rascist song about rape - um, no thanks.

humansuit, Thursday, 14 June 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

yeah its not one of my top tracks or anything for those reasons but all the same, i'd say its going for ironic contradiction there, thus the crabs-gotcha at the end

deej, Thursday, 14 June 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah I see your point, although in terms of ironic contradiction it's not my cup of tea. An ironic song about a skinhead raping an African American woman, anyone? I'd like to see Eminem pull that one off without comment. I have turned into an old fogey.

humansuit, Thursday, 14 June 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

Rapper in Neanderthal sexual politix shockah!

Oilyrags, Thursday, 14 June 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

Please don't forget that there is a consequence to Davy Crockett's actions, Humansuit.

da croupier, Thursday, 14 June 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

"treat her like a prostitute" and "indian girl" are pretty ill...although great...but man the song "Adults Only" on art of storytelling is disgusting...so bad....

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 14 June 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

oh come on i'm not saying its right or morally cool but its also not celebrating rape

deej, Thursday, 14 June 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

plenty to criticize w/out having to read something into it that isnt there

deej, Thursday, 14 June 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

Telling a jovial story about a man who rapes a girl who secretly wants it isn't celebrating rape, because Rick reveals that the girl has VD.

da croupier, Thursday, 14 June 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

ok thats not what i said, the vd reveal was important only in that it was another example of the undercurrent of intentional morbidity in the face of the lighthearted pop song its pretending to be

maybe i'm reading too much into his intent and he's a creep who thinks rape is ok but i assumed that while it wasn't an allegory for caucasian rape of north america its still not an endorsement of such

its a creepy song regardless

deej, Thursday, 14 June 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

still not an endorsement of rape in general, i mean

deej, Thursday, 14 June 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

because you may get VD.

da croupier, Thursday, 14 June 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

no

deej, Thursday, 14 June 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

because sometimes people tell stories about characters whose actions they don't necessarily endorse

but fuck it, i dont know, maybe he is a rape-y crepe and the song is weird enough that i'm not spending any more time playing cap'n save-a-con

deej, Thursday, 14 June 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

because sometimes people tell stories about characters whose actions they don't necessarily endorse

And Rick, at least, is a lot more straightforward about his status as what amounts to a fiction writer. "Indian Story" is a third-person narrative, like a lot of his songs, which is much rarer than first-person perspective in rap. And of course, a lot of the first person story-raps are fiction as well (or what people obsessed with 'realness' might call 'fronting.') Rap is such a strange case when it comes to lyrical content being conflated to represent the performer, probably because the persona of the rapper has becomes such an important marketing tool. Shit, when Rick first went to jail on attempted murder how impressed a lot of (mostly pretty stupid) people were.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 14 June 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, you don't want just assume that the author of "Treat Her Like A Prostitute" is permissive when it comes to misogynist violence.

da croupier, Thursday, 14 June 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

want to just assume, rather.

and "Children's Story" is the winner, obv.

da croupier, Thursday, 14 June 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

yes, obv if i think that there is some authorial distance that means i think that no authors have any intent whatsoever in their stories and are totally not responsible for anything they say

deej, Thursday, 14 June 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

but man the song "Adults Only" on art of storytelling is disgusting...so bad....

haha yep - that tune came up on some other thread tho, I think ethan was the one who really dug it

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 14 June 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

Please don't forget that there is a consequence to Davy Crockett's actions, Humansuit.

All you need do is go back to the 'skinhead raping the African American woman' thought exercise. Does consequence make the song less dispicable, "Because sometimes people tell stories about characters whose actions they don't necessarily endorse"? As others have pointed out, just because it is a story with no basis in fact does not put it above moral evaluation. In other words: I hate this fucking song. :(

humansuit, Thursday, 14 June 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

he's agreeing with you, he was clowning a misread of my contention

deej, Thursday, 14 June 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

Well it comes as no surprise to me that I didn't pick up on that.

humansuit, Thursday, 14 June 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

art of storytelling is excellent though i've been listening to it quite a bit lately.

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 14 June 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 14 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

I thought I'd be the only one voting for Moment I Feared.

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 14 June 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

More low turnout. I better not do a Kool Moe Dee poll or it'll be so depressing I'll kill myself for the 11 votes it attracts.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 14 June 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

Let's do a Dana Dane album next!

dlp9001, Friday, 15 June 2007 01:02 (eighteen years ago)
