Cheap Trick: Classic Or Dud

Fred and I thought this might be an interesting one. 2 C-O-D threads in a day. I should be ashamed of myself.

Tom, Wednesday, 11 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

classick. but of course. i can see why it might go dud, but that would simply be due to IGNORANCE. anyone within the, say, 21-25 year old age range might only know them for "the flame" and their cover of "don't be cruel." some might even know "i want you to want me," but even then i bet the majority would consider them a one-hit wonder, particularly since cheap trick don't seem to be a part of any rock n' roll pantheon, none of yer mainstream critics are placing in color in their top ten lists or what have ya.

so, yes, classic. as i've said many a time, if i liked the who outside of a small handful of songs, they'd be more like cheap trick. that is to say a vocalist who has more than one gear, a guitarist who knows more than one key, and a drummer who played with baseball bats (no dis towards mr. moon, one of rock's finest). and, of course, they'd be influenced by glam and punk, so in a way, cheap trick are to the who what guns n' roses are to led zeppelin.

search: the first four records and the authorized greatest hits, which has many of their best tunes of the 80s, a decade unkind to many a great 70s act.

fred solinger, Wednesday, 11 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

ha, i just saw them in concert...after a hockey game. maybe they were amazing but i never heard of them before the concert. they played a few songs that were new and sorta sucked but the "early material" was good. and playing 9 songs after a hockey game means that your only in it for the money..a clasud

Kevin Enas, Wednesday, 11 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Up through 1980 or so, utterly, totally and completely godlike and glorious. After that merely sporadic, but just about every good power-pop-rock band since wishes they were them. Weezer aren't fit to kiss their boots, frankly.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Genius. "Surrender" contains one of the great pop moments of all time, moving from "Before we married, Mommy served in the WACS in the Philippines." to "When I woke up, Mom and Dad are rolling on the couch." -- I still haven't figured out quite what this is all about, but I'm fairly sure it has to do with alienation and rock and roll and something about the war.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 11 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Thank you, Fred, for reminding me why I DON'T like talking to you 90% of the time. Just when I was starting to enjoy your company again, too - "IGNORANCE", eh? I say Cheap Trick are shit, dud, awful, and I've heard tons of their stuff. They're just useless to me, the voice makes me want to shoot myself and the songs themselves are not my style at all. But feel free to call me ignorant if you like. You already have about every OTHER band I've disagreed with you on, so why not Cheap Trick as well?

:P

Ally, Wednesday, 11 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm sorry, Weezer = the new Cheap Trick? Am I woefully mistaken or does that seem like a stretch? I mean, I could dismiss Radiohead for not living up to the legacy of Ted Nugent, but that wouldn't really make sense.

OR WOULD IT??????????? (cue extreme zoom and sinister organ)

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 11 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Nah man, Weezer are the New Bachman Turner Overdrive.
& that's the word from someone who actually likes Weezer, I personally have no opinion.

Duane Zarakov, Thursday, 12 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

...about Weezer I mean, re: C.Trick (if you care) I'd say album #1 is pretty great, #2 is really great, next few are pretty good, after that I don't know/don't care.

Duane Zarakov, Thursday, 12 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

.....& on reflection, I'd say more or less the same applies to Bachman Turner Overdrive.

Duane Zarakov, Thursday, 12 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I consider the vague Weezer/Cheap Trick parallels along these lines:

1) horny adolescence as subject matter

2) Kiss records mentioned in "Surrender," Kiss itself a Rivers Cuomo obsession

3) loud, poppy rock, man

Obviously this is hardly scientific. And as mentioned, one succeeds and the other eats.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

then the ignorance part doesn't apply to YOU. ;) it was said mostly in jest anyway, because there are other reasons to dislike them...i guess. however, there probably are a lot of people out there who only know them for the above mentioned songs and might like the older material if given the chance. similar examples are rod stewart and the beach boys...two more of your favorites. ;)

fred solinger, Thursday, 12 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think I'll borrow something from Mike and note that the drum hit at the beginning of Weezer's "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here" does more for me than any Cheap Trick I've ever heard. As you say, Ned. Hardly a scientific comparison. Or even, uh, sensible.

Josh, Friday, 13 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Classic, IN COLOR being a/the quintessential power-pop LP: ten songs, nine perfect, one merely listenable fluff. HEAVEN TONIGHT almost as good. I largely haven't heard their variously described "corporate" or "lost" years LPs, though the SEX! AMERICA CHEAP TRICK 4CD comp suggests those maligned albums have songs to rival their best. And I'd vouch for 94's buried-by-mass-label-sackings WOKE UP WITH A MONSTER non-comeback comeback. Place to start: IN COLOR or LIVE AT BUDOKAN.

totally classic. i can even forgive zander's haircut. and back in 1980 my sister, aged 9, had a weak spot for their bassist.
_auf wiederseh'n_ is one of my favourites, but all their first 4 albums are great.

As to their classicness, lemme just say that for anyone going to arena-rock shows in the midwest in the late 70s, Cheap Trick were incomprehensibly fresh and original and fun. I'll always love 'em for making it worthwhile to go see Foghat or any of the other boogie bands they always seemed to open for.

is it just me or does Cheap Trick cop the lead-in riff of the Move's "Brontasourus" right in the middle of "On Top of the World Tonight" on "Heaven Tonight"? There's this monster riff right in the middle that is an obvious quote of *something*...

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 1 November 2004 22:44 (twenty years ago) link

totally conscious quote. cheap trick were always major league Move fans. there's a great cover of "down on the bay" on their box set.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Monday, 1 November 2004 23:56 (twenty years ago) link

thanks - that riff's been stuck in my head - it just occurred to me that it might be a Move thing while I was here at work (and not, y'know, in front of my record collection where I could easily verify it). Been on a major Cheap Trick kick this year. What can I say, I'm late to the party... but I love the purty songs with the slightly evil subtexts (a la Steely Dan, Sparks, so many other 70s pop folks)

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 2 November 2004 00:07 (twenty years ago) link

Actually, it's in the middle of "California Man"--which is itself a Move cover--that they quote "Brontosaurus."

Man, I love The Move, but Cheap Trick's version of "California Man" just slays theirs. And it's never too late to arrive at Cheap Trick: the older I get, the more I believe the purty songs with evil subtexts (which would be, like, virtually the entire early Trick catalogue) are about as great as rock and roll ever got.

Dark Horse, Tuesday, 2 November 2004 00:35 (twenty years ago) link

ah! Thanks for pointing that out - I didn't even register that California Man was a Move song (like I said, I'm at work, records aren't in front of me - I have a Move collection, but California Man's not on it...)

As much as I love "Ghost Town" (cowritten w/the great Diane Warren! Unless there's another good MOR D. Warren) and "All We Need is a Dream" and even sort of (under pressure) "The Flame" (AND a few of the fast ones off this rec which is pretty obv "Lap of Luxury" isn't it) I'm still wondering, does ANYONE know what happened to them after "Dream Police"? They don't seem happy about what happened (whatever it was) in interviews, but noone ever seems to press them on the issue. Is it just accepted that people SOLD OUT in the 80s and we can't hold them to blame? As far as I know the orig rockin CT wasn't exactly a total failure saleswise ("Budokan" at least, right? Single AND album?), so, hmm. Prob just dull record co. "pressures" and so on but it seems odd for a reasonably successful band w/a pretty distinct personality to give up on themselves so completely (sound, songwriting, happily not the coverart as far as I've seen tho, still Tom/Robin on the front Rick/Bun E. on the back). It is 5am, pretty much.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 15:39 (twenty years ago) link

Well somebody mentioned on the Motley Crue thread that allegedly Tom Werman got Robin Zander to actually sing Vince Neil's vocals, so maybe they sold out because they secretly got a cut of the MC checks and therefore didn't have to do much for a while.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 15:43 (twenty years ago) link

One theory (put forth by the Rough Guide, I think) is that the first 3 records all came from the same batch of songs. But based on the recorded evidence and what I've read in Reputation Is a Fragile Thing, I think their mid-80s artistic collapse had more to do with the fact that their sales were slipping and CBS started insisting on them using outside writers. I mean, I don't know them all by heart, but best as I remember, All Shook Up, One On One and Next Position Please are all pretty decent — at worst, a little flat, but none are outright embarrassing.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:21 (twenty years ago) link

Bad production choices? It's hard to fault the Rundgren or Martin picks but they just didn't work in the end. Jack Douglas though? That's when it started to smell of desperation. Whenever I see them live I'm amazed at how good the songs off the moribound 80's albums sound. It seems like they never quite got the right production after Dream Police, and it could be argued before as well (though the albums are still brilliant).

How about this theory ... maybe the most important member of the band was the bassist?

I saw them at Shellac's ATP in 2002, held at Camber Sands. From what I remember they played for an audience of around 200 people on the second stage, and yet they were still giving it absolutely everything, with Rick Nielsen still duck-walking across the stage and throwing plectrums into the crowd. Really great, and a privilege to see them in such an intimate setting.

The first weekend they were upstairs but it thinned out massively about halfway through for (I think) The Fall downstairs (or, rather, a queue to get into The Fall downstairs) and they closed the set to about 200, still acting like they were at Wembley.

"Taxman, Mr. Thief" is so cool. also one of the rare sequel songs. imo it is a sequel to the original "Taxman". it pays tribute to the New Wave angular guitar stuff the Beatles were playing w on Revolver (their most futuristic/New Wave record). but its its own song w its only harmonies melodies and as always they are great and backed with cool angular guitar stuff. if you pay attention to the guitar parts, this is basically a Strokes track in 1977.

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 6 April 2018 00:52 (six years ago) link

and there is a sequel to "Hot Love" also in a way (and the "Get It On"-referencing intro to "Oh Candy"). its rare to find a band that wears their influences on their sleeve like this while still sounding super unique and one of a kind. Cheap Trick rules so much.

vocals, guitars, drums, they all know what they are doing. the vocals are so perfect for this kind of music. i guess the closest other bands i can think to them would maybe be Roxy Music or T-Rex. they all do that 50s teenage emo pop-via-70s glam, punk & New Wave.

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 6 April 2018 01:05 (six years ago) link

Oh Candy. That is my favorite.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 6 April 2018 02:08 (six years ago) link

Worth noting that in the late '70s, the Beatles were not terribly cool. Then you get this young band out of Rockford, of all places, that somehow manages to synthesize not just Beatles but hard blues rock and glam and power-pop, the sort of mix that could equally influence punks and new wave dorks as well as, eventually, '80s hair metal bands. Listening to "In Color" today, I think Zander may be key. He's such an awesome singer.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 6 April 2018 04:16 (six years ago) link

my "adjacent to inside" scoop, based on what i can glean, is that yeah Tom and Robin are not cool w/Bun. Rick seems like he's okay with him. Rick's son is cool w/Bun himself. I think Bun is okay w/Rick and his kid playing drums is probably for him a more respectful move than some random dude taking over.

I watch this dude's channel all the time, and this particular episode is great -- Douglas has a lot of fun stories about this recording, including the fact that it isn't the Budokan show at all, but a different venue in Osaka. They had to resort to all sorts of chicanery to get a decent drum track, too, because the drums were only miced up with two overheads.

The debut is all killer / no filler. In Color, Heaven Tonight, At Budokan, and — in a pinch — Dream Police are similarly fulfilling.

It’s true that, if you lived in the Chicago area in the late ‘70s, Trick was much more visible than in other parts of the US. “So Good To See You” got regular airplay on WLS, and when At Budokan came out (I remember TV ads for it; I don’t remember TV ads for any other record, ever), it was very much a “local boys make good” situation. So we heard “I Want You To Want Me” hourly, and usually semi-hourly.

Their career seemed front-loaded: Neilsen apparently had a stockpile of material, but didn’t really add to it, so by All Shook Up they were essentially bereft of solid material.

I agree with this. I think for a while the most common CD compilation from them focused on their later recordings which actually discouraged me from looking into them further - eventually I gave them another chance and I was surprised how much was overlooked from those first three studio LP's. Kind of crazy that when they finally broke through commercially, it was downhill from there musically speaking (though Dream Police isn't bad).
