.. at least, not yet.
So how did this happen? I don't remember a "deluxe reissue" even making the chart for a good 20 years or so. OK, so the who album is also in the top ten, no doubt due to some cheapo sale, but hey that wilbs one is 2 cds and a dvd. And not dead cheap either.
HAve so many 'dads' been waiting for a cd reissue for so long?

That is wild.

Is this the Amazon.com chart?
― If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Monday, 18 June 2007 00:56 (eighteen years ago)
I ask not so much because of the Wilburys, but because of the Who.
I should note that Mark is referring to the UK charts.
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 18 June 2007 01:05 (eighteen years ago)
They are #1 because they are clearly funnier and more moving than anything on the charts.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 18 June 2007 01:07 (eighteen years ago)
First album unavailable for about ten years. It's the Disney DVD formula.
― mulla atari, Monday, 18 June 2007 03:22 (eighteen years ago)
their 2004 best-of then and now was reissued with one of the new 2004 tracks ("real good looking boy") replaced with something from endless wire. "old red wine" is still on there.
― Lawrence the Looter, Monday, 18 June 2007 03:51 (eighteen years ago)
This doesn't surprise me at all. When I worked at a record store, people would ask for Traveling Wilburys all the time, only to be (surprisingly) disappointed to find out that it was all out of print.
I get the sense, too, that ebay prices were wildly inflated. Thus, when it finally comes back in print, all those people who've been trying to get it for years and years rushed out and bought it.
Yup.
― novaheat, Monday, 18 June 2007 03:57 (eighteen years ago)
No, I'm glad to see it, for the Wilburys anyway. (And this is someone who bought a replacement copy of The Who Sell Out just a few days ago.)

God, so the Who are now reissuing their reissues.

I wonder if before "Handle With Care" comes on, you have to sit through a bunch of Coming Attractions for Warner Bros releases after you put the CD in.
― Pleasant Plains, Monday, 18 June 2007 04:44 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, it's the Disney DVD effect plus it's been pretty well hyped, doc's on Radio 2, Barbra Orbison and Olivia Harrison doing press etc but most importantly Father's Day. Quite savvy timing from Rhino releasing it last week, the ideal gift for the Dadrocker in your life, though mine got a bottle of whisky. Apart from Rihanna the album chart looks like something from 1972 at the moment.
― Billy Dods, Monday, 18 June 2007 09:20 (eighteen years ago)
i blame wogan. he plays the wilburys all the time. when i was working in a record shop circa 2002 i would get at least one request a week for this album.
― acrobat, Monday, 18 June 2007 09:22 (eighteen years ago)
It's because it's Father's Day weekend. The Wilbury's album has been advertised on TV as "the perfect Father's Day gift", along with The Police (#3), Genesis (#5), Hank Fuckin' Marvin (#7), The Who (#9), The Clash (#13), and Van Morrison (#23).
Or XXP.

Wait, is the Clash thing the reissue of the Singles album with a different cover that just came out in the States? I mean, I sort of understand putting out new packages every few years, but again . . . reissuing the reissues, bleagh. That'll be the next ad campaign, of course.

Dom's right; it's insanely good timing for this release. Nice job, marketing people.
My girlfriend used to work in a Virgin megastore and has maintained for the last 6 years that this is the single most enquired-about record from her time there. Apparently every week she'd get someone coming in asking about it, and it got to the point where the conversation would go "Um, have you got this record, by this band that's got Bob-" "It's deleted, sorry, can't get it."
When we found out she contemplated getting a job back at Virgin just for the week of release so she could finally sell it to people.
― Scik Mouthy, Monday, 18 June 2007 09:46 (eighteen years ago)
As a record store employee, I concur--someone would come in about once a month looking for this album. The thing I don't concur about is the "Dadrock" assumption. The people looking for the Wilburys have been, in my experience, usually women, and my 30-year-old wife was one of the people most excited by the prospect of a reissue. Apparently she listened to this shit all the time back in junior high.
The first album IS pretty good. The second one (which I was confused about for a week) has more Dylan but isn't as good. I really like the dramatic Orbison song on the first one.
― dr. phil, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)
I really like the dramatic Orbison song on the first one.
"Not Alone Anymore," and, yeah, it's astonishing.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)
Dads already own those albums. This is because younger people have are finally able to buy the "Volume 1" masterpiece (and then the ever so less masterful "Volume 3" in the same breath)
― Geir Hongro, Monday, 18 June 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)
I bought it for myself on thursday and for my dad on friday.
He and I used to listen to the cassette of the first album all the time when I was younger. Really fond memories of it.
And the DVD, despite the documentary not talking about the second album at all, is pretty sweet. Got the set for 23 bucks at HMV, not bad for a decent DVD and two cd's with bonus tracks.
I forgot how much I dug the first album and "Inside Out" from the second one.
― Erock Zombie, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 00:35 (eighteen years ago)
I really like "Maxine," one of the bonus tracks on the first disc. Funny that they ended up with more than they needed for an album, given that the whole thing started as a B-side session.
― If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 01:01 (eighteen years ago)
how's the Dylan song ("Like a Ship," right?)?
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 01:34 (eighteen years ago)
Oh, that's good, too. "Maxine" just came to mind first.
― If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 01:45 (eighteen years ago)
Yep, you have to give mad props to the marketing people on this one.

Pretty amazing this whichever way you slice it. As a Beatles fan it always bothers me when the Fabs lose out to the Stones. Their reissues didn't chart as high, so.. HOW has this happened? I don't get it.
― piscesx, Sunday, 23 May 2010 22:55 (fifteen years ago)
well the beatles released like 13 reissues at once, whereas the stones are eeking them out more slowly. and the stones are adding bonus material. i don't think it's quote correct to overlay both groups of consumers

(or...)
So, basically, it's not part of the two CD 'deluxe' edition.

Depends on what tracks are on it - if it's just all the bonus material from 'Peel Slowly & See' and some live stuff that's been available on bootlegs for decades, then no-one's going to buy it.
― a great poke for Jet Set Willy (snoball), Monday, 8 October 2012 17:39 (thirteen years ago)
Disc 2 has a compilation of stuff from the alternate/early sessions acetate, some of it from the original session tapes.
Which means you *might* not need the big box..
― Mark G, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 15:24 (thirteen years ago)
Right, there are two different "the very best of ELO" albums in the TOP TEN!
Along with Jeff Lynne's solo album, which will presumably plummet next week!
― Mark G, Monday, 15 October 2012 10:40 (thirteen years ago)
I have to admit I am a bit disappointed about Jeff Lynne returning after a 21 years hiatus (OK, 11 years as the "Zoom" album was basically Lynne solo) with just a collection of covers. At least, unlike the disappointing Peter Gabriel covers album a few years back, the covers do indeed sound very much typically Jeff Lynne.
