^^^ I agree with this post

A B C, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 06:01 (eighteen years ago)

man, is that tab off.

John Splith, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 07:45 (eighteen years ago)

Choosing between the two of them is both impossible and unfair.

kwhitehead, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

My Husker love will always be tempered by how godawful those records sound (I think it was Xgau who dismissed "the appropriately named Spot"). I'll pick NDR, realizing that "Celebrated Summer" doesn't live up to the song I've got in my head.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

Zen Arcade, now and forever.

Now let's see a "Reoccurring Dreams" transcription!

OK, fine: "How To Skin A Cat" then.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

so so close, but i give the edge to zen arcade for "never talking to you again" and for the album artwork, and for NOT including "celebrated summer," which gets my vote as the huskers' most overrated moment. the title song from new day rising, on the other hand, is my favorite two and a half minutes of huskerdom of all.

new day rising.

Hey, I don't much like "Celebrated Summer" either!

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

This is just as good of a place as any to request that if anyone finds a clip or mp3 of Robert Palmer covering "New Day Rising", please let me know.

WAHT

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

Someone mentioned that on my best Husker Du albums poll thread.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

Though he had nurtured his ambitions to record torch songs, Robert had also enjoyed the opportunity of singing hard-rock numbers in his live sets and sampled such songs as "Eat The Rich" together with snatches of Husker Du's "New Day Rising".

Man, the more I learn about Robert Palmer the more I respect him.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

I remember reading an article on Palmer in Musician magazine (1987? '88?) that mentioned that he was covering New Day Rising.

i wish the hüsker albums sounded like the sugar albums

mookieproof, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

(production, i mean)

OTM. I was going to write this myself.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

i am very very glad the husker albums didn't sound like sugar albums. the writing and production of the husker albums evokes the actual word "sugar" to me more than anything on those sugar albums does.

i think i like new day rising as a whole better... but zen arcade has some awsome moments

Fans choice beats critics choice then (again)

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Sunday, 24 June 2007 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

I love the Huskers, but I am suprised Zen Arcade not only lost this one, but by this much. Zen Arcade is the monolith and it should get bonus points for inspiring Double Nickels on the Dime.

I concede on the song New Day Rising and a few other songs being as good as Husker Du ever did, but the second half of that album isn't near as strong. Zen Arcade really pushed things and the crazy noisy stuff like Hare Krishna, What's Going On, Dreams Reoccurring and I Will Never Forget You is so much better to my ears than something like How to Skin A Cat.

They are both raw recorded albums, but all of that reverb that Spot drenched on SST records starting about that takes away some of the impact. Zen Arcade is real dry and direct sounding.

I like New Day Rising, but Zen Arcade to me is the zenith of what Husker Du accomplished.

earlnash, Monday, 25 June 2007 01:10 (eighteen years ago)

I concur.

Speaking of Spot's productions, though -- I can't think of any that I really dislike. Even the ones that don't sound super-great through speakers are much better through headphones. And there are some that I simply love: the Minutemen's 'The Punch Line' and the Meat Puppets' 'Up On The Sun' being cases in point.
