So there's a Getz/Gilberto thread but not much of one and I'm listening to the The Complete Roost Recordings this morning. Talk about him as you like.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)
I have something called "The Roost Quartets" - is that the same thing or does the "complete" one also include trios, quintets, octets, even nonets?
I never got all that excited by that one. I like him best in the bossa nova setting - otherwise I find his sound a bit too sweet. Coltrane cited him as a big influence though.

This is really nice, although sound quality is disappointing:

I love Mary Lou Williams.

Let's see, according to this -- quartets, quintets (live and studio), plus sessions with Johnny Smith and Count Basie's mid-50s band, or part thereof.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)
Except for Getz/Gilberto, the only one I have is Stan Getz and Bill Evans. Which is a lot more propulsive and energetic than you might expect from a title like that, except that the drummer is Elvin Jones.

What am I supposed to getz?
ah.
oh.
er...
nevermind.

Some of my fellow jazz-school-dudes used to rate Captain Marvel highly. I remember listening to it back then and not liking it all that much, but I'd like to give it another shot - Stanley Clarke, Tony Williams & Airto = can't be that bad.
― Hurting 2, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)
Captain Marvel is pretty groovy & not too fusiony. The Latin stuff is ably & naturally handled by a band sympathetic to the material. The CD bonus tracks, namely Corea's "Crystal Silence" are worthwhile. Getz's first album featuring Corea, "Sweet Rain", from 1967 is worth seeking as well.

Stan Getz mod as all get out and this is a really good show. Again while they really don't care, American's should thank Europeans for capturing their culture for history. High quality TV production and sound for the era. It is really cool to see close up video of to really see Tony Williams, 'Stan' Clarke and Chick Corea play. Stan's tone is as always butter. From this gig you could see where the first couple of Return to Forever records sound comes. Worth a view.

Ah shit...search for Stan Getz/Chick Corea/Stanley Clarke/Tony Williams - Montreux 1972 on the Tube.
Outstanding set! I have often had a soft spot for 70s Getz and this one is a good reason why. Thank you for posting. Also I'd like to offer a retort on this:
while they really don't care, American's should thank Europeans for capturing their culture for history.
I get this. I'm not offended, and I'm asking somewhat in jest, but you do know how racist Americans are, right? It's not just a meme — and especially not in 1972.

sweet, thanks for the link earlnash
i love seeing all that great footage of tony williams' hands, especially
― Karl Malone, Sunday, 27 March 2022 14:53 (three years ago)
I'm assuming that as soon as the set ended, Stan Getz went outside and rode a motorcycle through a flaming hoop.

second the pick of Sweet Rain, also w Bill Evans Quartet, judging from the tracks I've heard, Oscar Peterson's combo, prob anything he did w Kenny Barron, ditto w Roy Haynes, incl. this opener to Focus, the album arranged by Eddie Sauter:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmnBgZ0yQHs
wiki sez: The theme of the opening track, "I'm Late, I'm Late", is nearly identical to the opening minutes of the second movement of Béla Bartók's Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. Bartók had been an early supporter of Sauter, who intended the track as an homage. "I'm Late, I'm Late" also features drummer Roy Haynes, the album's only soloist beside Getz.
― dow, Sunday, 27 March 2022 17:26 (three years ago)
That's the only track w Haynes, but whole alb is worth hearing. Focus is a jazz album recorded in 1961, featuring Stan Getz on tenor saxophone with a string orchestra. The album is a suite which was originally commissioned by Getz from composer and arranger Eddie Sauter. Widely regarded as a high point in both men's careers, Getz later described Focus as his favorite among his own records.[6] The pair would next collaborate on their soundtrack to the 1965 film Mickey One.[7]As noted in the booklet for the 1997 CD reissue, Sauter's orchestration did not include melodies for Getz. Rather, Sauter left spaces in the arrangements in which Getz would improvise.

Yeah I gotta check out Stan Getz Plays Music from the Soundtrack of Mickey One:
Stephen Cook reviewed the album for Allmusic and wrote that Getz was "well-prepared for the demanding task of soloing atop expansive movie soundtrack charts...Amidst Sauter's kaleidoscopic and mercurial backdrop, Getz offers up a fine mix of fluid improvisation and solo commentary. Never overpowered by the, at times, monumental full-band outbursts, Getz is able to remain poised and even break through the walls of sound with vigorous yet cogent statements of his own".[2]

I of course highly recommend any of his stuff with Bill Evans (I also just happen to prefer the 70s recordings). Have tried many times with Focus and I just can't crack it. The whole thing sounds directionless to me and the title isn't changing my mind the more I try.
Would pray to Getz Christ.

Not even the track with Haynes? Jazz Samba, with Charlie Byrd, is pretty good, and then Jazz Samba Encore really gets Getz going, in a suave way, of course. With Louis Bonfa on guitar, also Antonio Carlos Jobim shows up, good rhythm section too.I still need to hear the fuckin finally (2019!) released Getz at the Gate---good?
― dow, Sunday, 27 March 2022 18:06 (three years ago)
Jazz Samba Encore is about as classic as it gets in my book. Maria Toledo! I could listen to her sing forever. I haven't heard the Getz at the Gate stuff, but it looks wonderful — long set times, so I'd expect plenty of stretching out.
This morning I'm checking out the collaboration he did with the Clarke Boland Big Band. I didn't even know this existed! Apparently only ever issued in North America once in the late 90s on a limited run CD. It sounds a lot like the Clarke Boland stuff of the time —that is: big adventurous horn charts, lots of dynamic shifts, and plenty of busy solos— just with Getz as the featured soloist. Wonder if the Clarke Boland stuff will ever see a larger revival. Anyway, this album is good. Very unlike anything else he did at the time.

Continuing with "Stan Getz records I've been ignorant to", I'm checking out the Joao Gilberto 'reunion' album from 1976 right now and it's great. Besides the Bill Evans stuff, why have I neglected 70s Getz?
― Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Thursday, 31 March 2022 18:27 (three years ago)
i know i've mentioned it several times but the But Beautiful recording with bill evans continues to be in my rotation. i loved that show from Montreux with Williams and Clarke and Corea, but they're so brilliant (and from a different generation...seems like a factor) that Getz ends up bing overshadowed. it's amazing to hear him with Evans, within a year or two of that same gig, just playing so beautifully. that show is a real keeper, an all-timer for me now
― Karl Malone, Thursday, 31 March 2022 18:46 (three years ago)
(sorry, "i know i've mentioned it several times" in reference to austin, who introduced me to that recording upthread i think? thanks austin!)

Agreed that the younger guys steal the show. That's kind of what it makes it fun. Not sure how much props Sweet Rain gets these days, but it's another Getz I have a soft spot for and of course it's him and a bunch of youngsters — Chick Corea among them.

Ahh, I see dow already mentioned Sweet Rain. Consider that a co-sign from me! Such a classic.

Can't squeeze a note out of memory, but remember liking his album with the Oscar Peterson Trio: afternoon sun power to album with Evans Trio's moon waves.

Well maybe not waves all of the time, but moon-influenced movement.

OTM. Seems like all of the Peterson trio collab albums with a horn player have that similarly warm vibe.
Live-Evil Knievel sounds like the traveling revival tent where Getz Christ would appear.
