WHERE THA HOOD AT

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 02:24 (eighteen years ago)

I only remember five of these.

Tape Store, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

I might vote "Party Up" for nostagia-related reasons.

Tape Store, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 04:05 (eighteen years ago)

(and because it's AWESOME)

Tape Store, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

One more than I can remember. Party Up definitely wins though!

musically, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 04:29 (eighteen years ago)

"Get At Me Dog"/"Stop Being Greedy"

when he was at his best

gman, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 04:58 (eighteen years ago)

ugh. like "How's It Goin' Down/Ruff Ryders Anthem" aren't both his best rowdy and reflective tracks. One of the best flip of the coin rap singles ever.

talrose, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 05:55 (eighteen years ago)

deej, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

could have easily voted for party up or any of the first four, i forget how the aaliyah single sounds and i havent listened to that cd in a long time

deej, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

someone shd do a swizz beats poll

deej, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

This is fucking impossible, and that's without "It's All Good" or "Lord Give Me a Sign". I pick...no, I choose...ummm....fuck. I could pick about eight of those with no qualm. I'd actually thought about doing this myself, but kinda forgot about it.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, there are only seven that I'd vote for if I could, (and once again, missing the two I already mentioned, and with the tracks from It's Dark and Hell is Hot combined) but still, that's fucking SEVEN!

The Reverend, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

party up

someone shd do a swizz beats poll

yes plsssssss

bell_labs, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

Ruff Ryder's Anthem only reached #94? Party Up only reached #27? America, what the fuck is wrong with you? These songs were fucking omnipresent!

The Reverend, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

DMX's era was one where rap had mega sales but not Hot 100 dominance.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

hell, Jay-Z's only had a handful of top 10 singles and they were all 2001 or later.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

wasnt his biggest single 'me and my girlfriend'?

deej, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

not counting guest spots on other people's records, yeah!

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

But still, there were most definitely NOT ninety-three songs that were more popular than "Ruff Ryders Anthem" at its peak. The idea boggles my brain.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

hell, Jay-Z's only had a handful of top 10 singles and they were all 2001 or later.

"Hard Knock Life" wasn't a top 10 single?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

it was in a few countries (I don't know about Finland), but it peaked at 15 in the U.S.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Sunday, 24 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Mods please change my vote to "What's My Name"

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 24 June 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

Oh fuck, I vote for "Who We Be", just because I know its not going to get many votes. DUH-DUN! DUH-DUN! DUH-DUN! DUH-DUN!

The Reverend, Sunday, 24 June 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

"How's It Going Down / Ruff Ryder's Anthem" by a couple of miles.

ablaeser, Monday, 25 June 2007 07:00 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

ugh, I know "Party Up" was a big hit, but do people really like it that much more than "Ruff Ryders Anthem" or "What's My Name"?

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

Preacher tellin' the truth and it hurts?

jim, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

Ahhh, I'm glad "X Gon' Give It To Ya" got a couple votes.

X gon' give it to ya
Fuck waitin' for you to get it on your own
X gon' deliver it to ya!

The Reverend, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 04:34 (eighteen years ago)

It's probably because of seeing videos like "Where Da Hood At" that my elderly Asian neighbor never wants to rent out his house out to black people.

Cunga, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 07:00 (eighteen years ago)

X gon' give it to ya

Such a good track

Erock Zombie, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

Y'all gon' make me lose my mind
up in HERE, up in here
Y'all gon' make me go all out
up in here, up in here
Y'all gon' make me act a FOOL
up in HERE, up in here
Y'all gon' make me lose my cool
up in here, up in here
One fish two fish red fish blue fish
up in here, up in here

<---- Why I don't like DMX. Basically Dr. Seuss rhymes to crappy beats with zero lyrical skill.

humansuit, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

Sure, if you ignore, say:

"Or you gon' find yourself, buried next to someone else and we all thought you loved yourself
But that couldn't have been the issue, or maybe they just sayin that, now cause they miss you
Shit a nigga tried to diss you
That's why you layin on your back, lookin at the roof of the church
Preacher tellin the truth and it hurts"

milo z, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

That's not a very good lyric to be honest although I understand it's personal taste.

humansuit, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

yeah nice work using a hook as an example of his lyricism dude

deej, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

His flow is as good as anyone in that class under Nas/Biggie/etc.. Compared to Jay-Z, it's no contest - more passion, more listenable, more texture, better hooks, better flow. The way he switches from those big 'Dr. Seuss' choruses to double-speed lines to quick asides to jokes, with the thickness of the grunts/growls/barks. Just fantastic.

milo z, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

get at me dog got my vote.

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 23:41 (eighteen years ago)

yeah nice work using a hook as an example of his lyricism dude

Oh, come on, it's the dumbest hook EVER. I realize I'm just an Outkast apologist, but seriously, DMX? PFffft.

humansuit, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

how so

deej, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

eh?

humansuit, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

how is that hook the 'dumbest ever'

deej, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

Well, an A-B-C-B-D-B-E-B lyric pattern is a little more involved than a lot of pop-rap hooks, but you have to admit, the way his cadence is just straight quarter notes for every single syllable in that chorus does make it sound pretty simple-headed.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

how can a hook be smart or dumb?

for me, it's either catchy or not.

or annoying or not.

if it's catchy and not annoying than it's done it's job.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

its shit for the clubs, its a great club hook about losing yr mind

deej, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

and that's probably limiting its appeal more than it deserves

deej, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, stop with the semantics, Matt my friend. I'm not saying you can't like it. I'm just saying I HATE it!!! Outkast rulez :) xpost

And I've heard better club tracks, deej, but I'm really not trying to rain on your guys parade. Perhaps I'll slink off now.

humansuit, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

you don't like the song, ok, i'm just saying its silly to be like 'check how bad a lyricist hook writer he is!!!' like we're just supposed to take yr expectations that he sound more like wu tang or whatever (making that up, no idea what you are into really) as an insightful critique

deej, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

oops that bold was supposed to be lyricist

deej, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

My GOD what are you going on about? He sounds more like wu tang? What?

humansuit, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

I could be all "nobody else voted for slippin'?!" but really choosing it over "Up In Here" was totally sentimental.

da croupier, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

humansuit what is your idea of a good rap hook

deej, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

Hate it or love it has a great hook, off the top of my head. I like something with a little more rhythm. It doesn't have to come with a heavy message, but I like 'em when they're not so repetitive either.

four years pass...

dr. seuss my ass this is amazing

What we seeing is!
The streets, the cops, the system, harrassment (uh-huh)
The options, get shot, go to jail, or getcha ass kicked
(aight) The lawyers, the part, they are, of the puzzle (uh-huh)
The release, the warning, "Try not, to get in trouble" (damn!)
The snitches, the odds (uhh), probation, parole (what?!)
The new charge, the bail, the warrant, the hole (damn!)
The cell, the bus, the ride, up North (uh-huh)
The greens, the boots, the yard, these hearts (uhh!)
The fightin, the stabbin, the pullin, the grabbin (what?!)
The riot squad with the captain, nobody knows what happened
(what?!) The two years in a box, revenge, the plots (uhh!)
The twenty-three hours that's locked, the one hour that's not
(uhh!) The silence, the dark, the mind, so fragile (aight!)
The wish, that the streets, would have took you, when they had you
(damn) The days, the months, the years, dispair
One night on my knees, here it comes, the prayer

j., Thursday, 29 October 2015 05:12 (ten years ago)

i have been listening to so much DMX lately, listened to what's my name on NYE like ten times

he's a preacher now

this verse shows the sense of humor sometimes buried in his oeuvre, and points to alternate world where he incorporated a dancehall style into his raps
