I was skeptical, but the clip played in this WNYC show is very convincing and nearly fools Jon Schaeffer (who admits if he didn't know one of the three clips played was synthesized he probably wouldn't notice the difference)

It's also pointed out that these are short clips, and that flaws would become more apparent in entire works. Still, it's pretty incredible.

The main point made in favor of the tech was that it gives composers who lack funds (meaning most of them) a chance to hear roughly what their works would sound like performed and/or make demo tapes for a lot less than it would cost to rent and record an orchestra. It's still expensive software and it's still an extremely labor-intensive process.
