Does Soul Have Soul?

When did it get it? When did it lose it? How can you tell? What does it all mean anyway? Who'll be the first to make a David Soul gag?

R&B has rhythm. But does it have blues? Tweet does!

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In both senses! Anyway I thought the R and the B in R&B were like KFC now in their not-really-standing-for-anything. I'm kind of eh about a music which has blues but I'm pretty keen on a music which has a good dose of B!!!

'Soulful' - secular version of gospel/religious 'uplift'? (eg Sam Cooke )

Why aren't recs praised for being full of 'rock'?

Andrew l, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought that's what was going on with Andrew WK?

Dan Perry, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rhythm and Blues once meant just that. Now it means that even if you are fat and ugly, you can laid to this music. R&B and heavy metal are currently tied for the fattest demographic. Only classic rock tops them.

Yancey, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I guess critics have to praise WK for it since he seems to be really didactic about the whole thing. "ROCK! PARTY! PARTY! PARTY! ROCK! WET! STROH'S!"

I also believe that "soul" is too often used as a cheap catch-all euphemism for "black". This makes it kinda suspect when you try to apply it to, say, Van Morrison. Or Lenny Kravitz, for that matter.

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Now it means that even if you are fat and ugly, you can [get] laid to this music.

If this were true it would be the best music evah and world peace would surely follow. I suspect it isn't though. Alas.

Tom, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Stroh's!!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yancey: thanks for the tip. I had forgotten that fat people are stupid and that equating things with fat people makes those things stupid and makes smart, thin people like us laugh!

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Yancey: thanks for the tip. I had forgotten that fat people are stupid and that equating things with fat people makes those things stupid and makes smart, thin people like us laugh!"

Right. Except that I wasn't being serious in the least, only to say that the main thrust, so to speak, for modern R&B is fucking. Which I'm down with.

Yancey, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think R&B is way less fuck-music than old-style R'n'B ever was. At least half the time the singers in current R&B are frozen over or out, unsatisfied, calculating, too busy with the whole fractal world around the fuck (i.e. with "dating" or "relationships") to care much about the physicality of it. Also for all the protestations that's the way they - and we - like it.

We're well on our way to declaring Kraftwerk the most soulful band ever.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well duh.

mark s, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

R. Kelly = fuckmusic, as does 112.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Listening to R Kelly's indulgent 'I'm the greatest' yowl all I can think of is onanism.

Barnaby, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Or has Sterling left an 'inggodawful' out of his post?

barnaby, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

doesinggodawful 112? That doesn't even make sense.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wet!

Sean, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Van Morrison was pretty clearly influenced by black music and trying to go for that whole thing, so the 'soul' signifier is pretty appropriate.

Up the ass, no less.

Michael Daddino, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

[x] is A => "influenced by" => [y] is A ????

This is why "influence" doesn't exist QED

"did the animals have soul? rene descartes, you first..."

mark s, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nu soul disturbs me. the dysfunction, lies and the illusion of a rewarding relationship are all so close to the surface. so bleak even in the most upbeat jammy jams. shade to shade

bc, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

''What does it all mean anyway?''

After some, er...soul searching I think the word 'soulful' is used to describe things that are full of life.

The problem is I think that, say, Throbbing Gristle's Heathen Earth are full of life and joy.
