I'm going to be CONTROVERSIAL and vote for "Today"

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 22 June 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

I Don't Believe in You
I Believe In You

Talk Talk is it's own contrarian!

Mark G, Friday, 22 June 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

new grass

beautiful

gman, Friday, 22 June 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

I was as close as Curt1s to voting for 'Today' then I changed my mind at the last minute to 'Living In Another World'.

I think this could be one of the closest polls yet, each song has its own merits.

aldo, Friday, 22 June 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

Living in Another World is another fav for me!

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 22 June 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

but being the synthpop purist I am, y'know

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 22 June 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

i voted for new gass but i could just as easily have voted for 5 other songs.

jed_, Friday, 22 June 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

grass

jed_, Friday, 22 June 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't think anything off LS got released as a single?

Scik Mouthy, Sunday, 24 June 2007 07:35 (eighteen years ago)

this is according to Wikipedia :/

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 24 June 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

"Dum Dum Girl"

- yeah, I too prefer "New Grass" et al. but as far as Talk Talk singles are concerned, this one has one of their best ever hooks (the chorus just explodes out of nowhere!) and is an incredible opening track to their best-ever POP MUSIC album.

stephen, Sunday, 24 June 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

and yeah, there were no official "singles" from Laughing Stock - there's a talk talk singles comp on EMI that has all their singles (i believe) in chronological order, though

Natural History: The Very Best of Talk Talk

1 Today
2 Talk Talk
3 My Foolish Friend
4 Such a Shame
5 Dum Dum Girl
6 It's My Life
7 Give It Up
8 Living in Another World
9 Life's What You Make It
10 Happiness Is Easy
11 I Believe in You
12 Desire

...which eliminates I Don't Believe in You, plus all the Laughing Stock stuff, and aside from leaving off Mirror Man sounds just about right, but i could be wrong still...

stephen, Sunday, 24 June 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

i don't believe in you is amazing, so i'm picking that, though I could just as easily pick almost anything else

akm, Sunday, 24 June 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

^^^ came out before Laughing Stock dude

xpost

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 24 June 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

(Natural History is my main TT joint fwiw but it's not comprehensive)

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 24 June 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

you'll also note that it contains "Desire" which wasn't a single

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 24 June 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Life's What You Make It

Vice City memories. Released or not, I wouldn't consider Spirit of Eden or Laughing Stock singles material.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I missed this. I would've voted for "New Grass."

stephen, Thursday, 28 June 2007 07:45 (eighteen years ago)

eleven years pass...

Let's sat that they were purposely silly.

You like queer? I like queer. Still like queer. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 28 October 2018 01:41 (seven years ago)

I'm such a pathetic stan for Laughing Stock that I picked up one of these on eBay earlier in the year:

I'm increasingly coming around to the idea that Colour of Spring is 'the one' but Spirit of Eden is too low (by one)!

Have the Rams stopped screaming yet, Lloris? (Chinaski), Sunday, 28 October 2018 10:04 (seven years ago)

Yeah I can't see any argument for Spirit being less than top three (though actually separating then is a task)

You (bleeping) need me. You can't Finn without me (fionnland), Sunday, 28 October 2018 10:41 (seven years ago)

The thing about The Colour of Spring is that it is positively inventive but the hooks (and there are so many) mean that you don't have to be fully in the mood, maaaaan.

(Laughing Stock is still No.1 for me.)

riposte malone (King Boy Pato), Sunday, 28 October 2018 11:46 (seven years ago)

spirit of eden towers above the rest

niels, Sunday, 28 October 2018 12:04 (seven years ago)

and everybody knows

niels, Sunday, 28 October 2018 12:04 (seven years ago)

London 1986 is the one I listen to the most these days, actually. Has an absolutely GODLIKE version of “Tomorrow Started”

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 28 October 2018 12:32 (seven years ago)

Life's What You Make It often pops into my head. A belated vote for that

imago, Sunday, 28 October 2018 12:36 (seven years ago)

Yes, this - and the version of "Renee" is quite amazing as well.

I'm such a pathetic stan for Laughing Stock that I picked up one of these on eBay earlier in the year:

My brother once worked in a record shop and stole got one of those for me - I've got no idea what happened to it though.

Alma Kirby (Tom D.), Thursday, 1 November 2018 11:56 (seven years ago)

Laughing Stock is my favourite, have yet to listen to the albums from the debut to and including Spring in their entirety, but man - Such a Shame is clearly my winner as the best single. Incredible quality song on every possible level.
