Barbara's new 3 CD reissue of Lately I Keep Scissors & One Perfect Green Blanket is just out and is wonderful along with the two dozen outtakes, demos and live cuts. I think her entire output (28th Day, World Of Pooh, SF Seals, solo) is classic. Except -Sings With The Original Artist-, which has never grabbed me. Unfortunately the last couple of EPs have only come out in Germany, which is a shame because they're tremendous.

What say ye about the folk-punk queen?

Mr. Odd, Friday, 22 June 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

CLASSIC!

Alex in SF, Friday, 22 June 2007 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

Where do you find this btw?

Alex in SF, Friday, 22 June 2007 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

I got my copy on eBay but Mod Lang has it cheap.

Mr. Odd, Friday, 22 June 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

i'm curious now...

Surmounter, Friday, 22 June 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

Love the Lately I Keep Scissors / One Perfect Green Blanket CD, not so keen on 1212 or SF Seals really. Would you say this box is just for completists?

Matt #2, Friday, 22 June 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

huge fan of 1212

Steve Shasta, Friday, 22 June 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

where can you get the box set other than ebay? doesn't seem to be on amazon ... i really liked I Keep Scissors, but lost my copy of it a while back.

tylerw, Friday, 22 June 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

totally rules, esp the in NZ ep! class act all around. "aramoana" is such a tight jam.

"end of the rainbow cover" on 1212 is v v good.

69, Friday, 22 June 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

um move cover out of quotes blah blah

69, Friday, 22 June 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

and, um, classic! at least for that particular record. Haven't heard everything she's done, though. Wasn't nuts about 1212, liked some of the SF Seals stuff (I still have that baseball-themed 7 inch). Seem to recall that her tune on the No Alternative comp was ace too. Though now it seems weird that she was on that! And I don't have it but i remember liking the NZ ep with the Clean peeps. Nice cover of "Everything I Do Is Right"

tylerw, Friday, 22 June 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

If you've already got the CD two-fer with Scissors / Blanket, the box is really for completists. I think AmazonUK has it listed, check the usual suspects - Darla, Mod Lang, Aquarius, etc.

Bab's has stray tracks and guest appearances all over the place and they're all wonderful. She does a cover of The Fall's "Paintwork" that is totally worthy. And her appearances on David Kilhour's Heavy Eights record is great as is JC Hopkins -Athens By Night-.

Mr. Odd, Friday, 22 June 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

Is there any way to get the World of Pooh stuff yet?

dlp9001, Friday, 22 June 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

Could someone please supply a track listing, so I can see how completist I actually is / be?

David R., Friday, 22 June 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

No CD reissue for World Of Pooh yet, sadly. Rumored to be in the works.

Lazy sods! The track listing is on Amazon.co.uk, title is "Super Scissors".

Mr. Odd, Friday, 22 June 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

World Of Pooh comp was delayed by Brendan, no fault of the person trying to put it out.

David R., Friday, 22 June 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

I really like her previous rarities collection (the great Verlaines track is compiled on there.) The two SF Seals records are amazing (except for that nine minute noise thing on the first one.) I like 1212, but I actually prefer the tracks after the Arsonist suite on that record.

Alex in SF, Friday, 22 June 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

The only meh thing she did was that Sings With The Original Artists thing which I just couldn't get into.

Alex in SF, Friday, 22 June 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

JOED OUT!!!!!

David R., Friday, 22 June 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

I think one of my earliest NYLPM posts was all about comparing 2 Verlaines songs she covered (that one, & one off of Over the Moon).

David R., Friday, 22 June 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

I love the Bats' cover too! B4 WE GO UNDER!

Alex in SF, Friday, 22 June 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

To counter act the two "meh" votes for Original Singers, I'll go on record as liking it (tho, to be honest, I haven't listened to BM in a looooooong time).

David R., Friday, 22 June 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

David - you're welcome. Now I have to wash my foot.

Alex - I concur about -Original Artists-. I pulled it out recently and it still is just "meh". Oh, and "B4 We Go Under" is a Magick Heads song, beautiful it is.

What's the other Verlaines cover? Her kiwi pals say nice things about her in the -Super Scissors- liner notes.

The only side project I couldn't stand was Glands Of External Secretions. Noise stuff, not my scene.

Mr. Odd, Friday, 22 June 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

"Oh, and "B4 We Go Under" is a Magick Heads song, beautiful it is."

Same diff.

Alex in SF, Friday, 22 June 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

Are her singles on that rarities comp? I wish they were on this box, there were a couple of good ones (a split with Glands etc iirc, plus the one on Forced Exposure and another one).

Pretty classic, my favorite in the In New Zealand record but I like it all. There was also at least one excellent live torrent floating around that had some good cover tunes incl. Tom Lehrer and Amon Duul.

From her myspace site:

Now that Barbara is back in California, she finished a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She hopes that having a "real" job will enable her to continue her passion of making music. She plays solo and with other local heros in her current home town of Chico California. check out her website at: barbaramanning.com

would anyone really say dud?

the SF Seals are amazing.

babyalive, Monday, 14 January 2008 03:28 (eighteen years ago)

One of my favorite songwriters ever. And one of the best songs-by-other-people-coverers around, too.

Douglas, Monday, 14 January 2008 04:03 (eighteen years ago)

There's a great cover of "Crazy Man Michael" in the most recent ish of Ptolemaic Terrascope.

Alex in SF, Saturday, 19 January 2008 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

Doubtless there'd be some more World of Pooh on these if I had any more, but "Druscilla Penny" is the only track I've ever been able to get my hands on (Glands of External Secretion, otoh, are unrepresented due to their total suckage).

Hey, she's playing in Seattle on Friday.

clotpoll, Thursday, 2 December 2010 06:38 (fifteen years ago)

Will she come back to the US East coast?

curmudgeon, Thursday, 2 December 2010 13:54 (fifteen years ago)

glad to hear she's still making music! thread is reminding me i still need to get that super scissors set, all these years later.

tylerw, Thursday, 2 December 2010 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

I think she's been too busy doing molecular biology or something to tour. Our loss entirely.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 2 December 2010 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

She is studying Forestry.

Saw her tonight opening for Codeine at Black Cat. Great solo set with her Gretch guitar, plus one song with Codeine bassist and drummer. She opened with a Moody Blues cover . Was very chatty between songs and beaming during songs. She’s now a drama and guitar teacher in high school. She did a new song called “Cantor’s Mind was Rocking “ and tunes from throughout her career.

curmudgeon, Saturday, 11 November 2023 05:45 (two years ago)

She also sang “Strawman,” “ Number Zero” “Never Park”. “Better By Bounds” ( dedicated to late singer George Jones) “Ladies of the Sea” “Deep Sea Diver” and “ Scissors “
