Taking Sides: Suzi Quatro vs. Lene Lovich

Chicks with Detroit in their backgrounds found fame and some fortune in 70s Britain, then lost it before getting anywhere back stateside. Suzi played up her Motor City roots in a glam decadence framework (cf. scuz-tastic 1st LP cover), while LL drew from her Yugo heritage to fashion a New Wave gypsy-occult entranced weirdo persona. After a few great singles each, the songwriting dried up and the gonzo image got watered down. So who had the tunes, the legacy, the heart of Detroit-babeness?

I'll take Suzi Q. anyday, if only for her tenure in the Pleasure Seekers and her appearances on Happy Days.

Suzi Quatro was presenting some kind of Brummie chat show called 'Gas Street Basin' or something about 10 years ago. She was quite respectable. Whatever happened to that? I'm surprised her old mate Ron Howard hasn't done a smashing film about her, the miserable sod.

Calling the first LP cover "scuz-tastic" is perfect. For me it's Quatro all the way; I love that sound and aesthetic to death. Lovich's first album was cool, and was among the first twenty or so LPs I ever bought (!).

Simillar to that AC/DC- Joy Division query, I'd have to say that they don't realy warrant a strong comparison, apart from the points you mentioned. Beyond their gender and their geographic affiliation, they are worlds apart.

That said, I'd opt for Lene every time, if only for "Lucky Number," "New Toy" and "It's You, Only You (Mein Schmerze)"....a song originally by a Dutch band called The Meteors (not the British psychobilly band)

No versus here. Both Quatro and Lovich rule. Quatro's cameo on Absolutely Fabulous was totally awesome
