please help. i need to know more artists that have put out albums of pretty piano music. i'm looking for stuff like that one song on drukqs.

i'm sure this thread is just going to get hijacked by cat pictures (just like any other thread that isn't a poll). but if anyone wants to help, that would be neat.

also, please no classical stuff.

Maybe Harold Budd? His stuff is pretty in a noodly ambient way. Particularly his stuff with Eno, and his "Moon and the Melodies" thing with the Cocteaus (tho not pure pianner).

Wim Mertens - Close Cover

Terry Riley - The Harp of New Albion

Ooh I'm curious about this, whats it like?

Trayce, Sunday, 24 June 2007 09:15 (eighteen years ago)

seconding Gonzales - Solo Piano and contributing Kate Bush - Cathy's Home Demos. These demos are basically Kate Bush playing piano and singing and it's the greatest thing I've heard in a while.

i'd strongly recommend "Goldmund - Corduroy Road", really beautiful short minimalist piano stuff. theres also a 7" with 6 or so very short tracks thats even better!

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 24 June 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

and Satie's Trois Gymnopedies are good even though you said "no classical," v. sparse and accessible

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 24 June 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe Ludovico Einaudi? Marketed as classical, closer to TV theme music really. Ditto Michael Nyman's score for "The Piano" I guess.

Craig Armstrong put out a collection I think called "Piano Works" that are piano-only interpretations of his more famous songs and film scores. Whether you like it depends very highly on whether you like Craig Armstrong. Some of it is very pretty and worth seeking, some of it is very boring.

Ditto on what Wookie Rookie said but for Mitchell Froom's solo piano album and selected Jon Brion tracks.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 05:01 (eighteen years ago)

btw FF, I know what you're talking about...I went through a pretty piano phase a few months ago...I also heard that AT track as a result of looking for Avril Lavigne songs...

Try this one: Spiegel Im Spiegel

It's Arvo Part (my favorite composer), and it's reallllllllllllly beautiful

Tape Store, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 05:16 (eighteen years ago)

oh, and warning: it's also really sad...I just cried when I listened to it. :(

Tape Store, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 06:10 (eighteen years ago)

seven years pass...

I'm currently making a Spotify playlist that is 'serious' classical music alternating with some piano interludes by non "classical" composers (such as the afformentioned Aphex Twin, Goldmund, Gonzalez, Akira Rabelais, et al).

Need to add Radicalfashion's Odori in here because the whole album is amazing and it never gets enough love.

Well, here it is but it's still pretty much a work in progress as many of the 'classical' versions I want are not available in Spotify and I need to hear the different interpretations of several of those to see which ones I like the best. Also it's not arranged as a playlist right now and there's many songs I'll keep removing and adding. Follow at your own risk if you don't mind receiving notifications about it in the following weeks:
