Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

There should have been a "no" option. :)

Jordan, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

But I voted for Scofield for his 90s records.

Jordan, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

I just got that Tal Farlow Quadromania thing, mostly for the Savoy trio sessions with Mingus and Red Norvo, but basically the whole thing is incredible... probably still gonna vote for Grant Green, though, because Idle Moments was the album that really got me into jazz.

bernard snowy, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:44 (eighteen years ago)

does that django guy count as jazz?

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

Why not?

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

FUCK, HOW DID I NOT PUT HIM ON THE LIST?!

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

I specifically remember typing his name, then thinking "I'll move him down the list so he's not next to all my other favorites." I must have forgotten to move him.

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

So I guess if you want to vote Django, just write in Django and we'll tally the numbers.

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

Shall I go ahead and make an uninformed vote? I know one guy and I like him.

dean ge, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

You filthy swine.

Oilyrags, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

Grant Green.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

Brandon Ross? Masujaa?

Oilyrags, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

I guess I could have included William Ash too. And Jeff Parker

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

I already forget who I voted - Jim Hall? I'm fucking beat tired.

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

SHARROCK

Rock Hardy, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

Most underrated - Bauer

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I gotta lot of love for a lot of these dudes, but I think it's going to inevitably be Sonny.

Oilyrags, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

Sharrock gets huge love on ILM. I won't be surprised if he wins.

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

Oooh! Wait! Ben Monder--really under-rated, and what about Lenny Breau?

Jubalique die Zitronen, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I also thought of Ben Monder too late.

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

I have never heard of Ben Monder.

Oilyrags, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

There should have been a "no" option. :)

OTM

Saxby D. Elder, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

Well, that's more for me then!

Wait. That's not true, is it...

Oilyrags, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway, I have a hunch that the Paul Motian Trio's version of "Tinkle Trinkle" with Frisell handling the monk-chords might make you think twice about such intolerance.

Oilyrags, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

count this as one django vote

no harm, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 00:54 (eighteen years ago)

Bill Frisell is my guy.

The Macallan 18 Year, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)

not that i think he is especially adept at his instrument or a great song writer but i listen to EAST/WEST a lot.

The Macallan 18 Year, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)

Sharrock gets huge love on ILM. I won't be surprised if he wins.

-- Hurting 2, Monday, June 25, 2007 10:25 PM

I'd never heard of him until a few couple days ago, but I now own like 3 of his albums.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

The fact that I have to choose between McLaughlin and Joe Pass is a fucking crime though.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:03 (eighteen years ago)

Got "Ask the Ages"? That's the one to have, if you have to only have one (but luckily you don't.)

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:07 (eighteen years ago)

That is the one End of an Ear didn't have, the bitches.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:08 (eighteen years ago)

OOP, not their fault.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

I mean, check it:

11 New and used available from 11 New and used available from $29.989.98

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:11 (eighteen years ago)

Uh, $29.98, that is. But still.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:12 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah I was being half-serious.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

But you know the time, right?

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:14 (eighteen years ago)

Another underrated dude (admittedly I only know him from one Oscar Pettiford session) - Atilla Zoller.

I left out Pete Cosey because I think of him more as a rock guy who played on some fusion albums, but I don't really know him that well.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:15 (eighteen years ago)

Phil Upchurch

Andy K, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

Django, but Grant Green is pretty great too.

talrose, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:22 (eighteen years ago)

Guitar is the Sharrock to have, but Ask the Ages is almost as good.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:23 (eighteen years ago)

There's a Sharrock collection on eMusic that has a few Ask the Ages cuts. I think it's the one title they have of his, so it'll be easy to find.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:53 (eighteen years ago)

Does anyone else think Joe Pass is just a flashy robot? I might've heard the wrong stuff...

Rich Smörgasbord, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 02:27 (eighteen years ago)

I never cared much for Joe Pass - even the "Virtuoso" recordings everyone raves about. I think "robot" is harsh, but he's kind of like the Oscar Peterson of guitar.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 02:29 (eighteen years ago)

"like the Oscar Peterson of guitar"

This is rather otm, but that's part of what I like about him.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 02:29 (eighteen years ago)

He's a little too perfect and pleasant all the time.

I do like the Joe Pass/Herb Ellis stuff. Have you guys ever heard them do Seven Come Eleven live? Holy fuck!

I noticed there are some Russell Malone references on this thread. His latest release Time for the Dancers is sick.

calzino, Thursday, 24 August 2017 10:22 (eight years ago)

Wow, thanks for the tip re: the book.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Thursday, 24 August 2017 14:26 (eight years ago)

Looks like that Abercrombie book is lead sheets plus commentary. No solo transcriptions, if that's what your after.

When I Get To The Borad (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 26 August 2017 11:56 (eight years ago)

Abercrombie tears shit up on Enrico Rava's Katcharpari from 1973, which was just remastered by the MPS label. It's a very Jack Johnson/On the Corner-ish album, and Abercrombie's guitar playing is ferocious.

Ooh need to check this out. I always thought he was kind of a slept on guitarist in hipper jazz circles although he has had some commercial success.

I reviewed the new Malone album in my Stereogum column. You can stream one track there.

I just remembered I have 3 Billy Cobham albums from the '70s with John Abercrombie on 'em. Gonna dig those out.

grawlix (unperson), Saturday, 26 August 2017 18:03 (eight years ago)

That´s correct. There are 32 tunes from his entire career, from "Timeless" to "Within A Song" + a discography. It also features some alternative chord voicings heard on record but not listed in the lead sheets. You´ll learn about his obsession with minor flat six chords that imply the aeolian mode.

EvR, Saturday, 26 August 2017 18:10 (eight years ago)

Well, in that case, I'll have to get it then

When I Get To The Borad (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 26 August 2017 19:03 (eight years ago)

But really came to post about that other motif, that I recently discovered Rudy's had reopened on Broome Street. Went there last week and at the top of the stairs leading to the basement level is a picture of Russell M.

Spotify has an album now with Ted that I had never heard before, a 1973 Albert Heath record called Kwanzaa. Kenny Barron is on it too. Pretty good.

Ted Dunbar that is

I believe I may have mentioned before, perhaps on this very thread, that Albert 'Tootie" Heath's brother Jimmy assigned your teacher the nickname Texas Ted.

I may have mentioned that he took over for Ted after Ted died and I had a semester of lessons with him. He was a very nice guy and a good teacher but I was in a really bad emotional place at the time and couldn't absorb much. I did gain one very useful lesson from him, which was to think about setting up your next improvisational moves on the neck of the guitar the way a pool player sets up for his next shot.

The Thin, Wild Mercury Rising (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 11 September 2023 02:41 (two years ago)

Surprised by the zero votes for Metheny, only because the biggest jazz fanatic I knew in school (which is saying a lot because I knew quite a few who were dedicated fans, playing in bands, hosting a jazz radio show on the school's radio station, etc.) was also a guitarist who worshipped Metheny, and now that he's teaching somewhere I'm sure he's pushing him on to his students. I would never vote for him but despite my reservations I have grown to like him, he's a good sideman on a good number of albums I really like and I love the one he did with Ornette Coleman.

birdistheword, Monday, 11 September 2023 10:35 (two years ago)

Having his name misspelled might not have helped his vote count.
I'm enthralled by about half the tracks on his debut, respect his outing with Ornette, and everything else I've heard completely escapes me. Especially when he plays that guitar synth sound that sound like my cat talking to the birds: "mew mew mew mew mew mew...mew mew mew mew mew".

More to the point, where's Terje Rypdal?!?

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 01:03 (two years ago)

...who I see was mentioned once above. As was Lenny Breau, who deserves attention though I wouldn't have voted for him.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 01:07 (two years ago)

For people who never clicked with Metheny or have only heard his smoother side, check out his playing on Kenny Garrett's Pursuance record,it's fierce.

This is how I feel about a lot of his music. His sound ranges from tolerable to awful on most records for me, and sound/tone is everything to me. He smokes on that Trio 99/00 album though and sounds better than usual as well.
