I guess the obvious answer is probably some Tito Puente or Charlie Palmieri record from the 70s, or some Fania thing, but what?

Hurting, did you ask LaRue's permission before starting this thread?

I just put on Eddie Palmieri's The Sun Of Latin Music before I opened this thread- does that count?

I've been listening to Vamonos Pal Monte, which is the same era, and it's good, but it doesn't kill like that live clip. But that might just be a matter of nothing kills like a live outdoor set in the Bronx.

I was actually going to say most 70s Eddie Palmieri (even though this clip is Charlie Palmieri). Unfinished Masterpiece smokes like that, but of course there's a catch, which is that the sound quality is really bad. (It wasn't released on Fania either, and I don't think it's going to be caught up in their reissue process. Anyway, it's not a matter of poorly mastered CDs or anything--the original vinyl sounds bad too, from what I've been told.)

I'll have to think. I don't love Ray Barretto so much, but some--some--of his late 70s material might fit the bill. Try the track "Indestructible" (my favorite song of his). (Actually there's a live recording of that from possibly the 90s or later that's even more intense than the studio version.)

None of the solo Charlie Palmieri I've heard sounds like that live track you linked to either.

Look for Nicky Marrero on timbales. I think his studio recordings might actually smoke more than Tito Puente's (but then there's an awful lot of Puente I haven't heard). Willie Colon/Hector Lavoe's "Aguanile" would be an example. (At least I think that's Nicky Marrero, now I'm doubting my memory.) I haven't even looked at it, but here's his myspace:

I realized from the comments section that the Puente track (the first one in the clip) is "Para Los Rumberos" - and it's on an album of the same name, which is on emusic. Unfortunately it's done at a slightly slower, less smokin' tempo, but it's still pretty great.

That is a sick video.

I think part of what's good about it is how dirty the sound is. Salsa records rarely seem to sound that dirty.

i think it was a video of tito puente's band (or maybe it was palmieri) playing outside in nyc in the 70s, pretty sweet.
