Elephant > White Blood Cells > Icky Thump > Get Behind Me Satan > De Stijl ... The White Stripes (I haven't heard the latter)

zeus, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

De Stijl for me - I don't get the White Blood Cells love, that's the one I listen to the least. Its both their ugliest-looking and ugliest-sounding album.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

altho I haven't heard the new one yet - vinyl was sold out at Amoeba on Saturday :(

De Stijl , 1st one i bought.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

White Blood Cells. I'll be sad if Elephant wins.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

De Stijl is the only one i dont own yet, and for some reason or another i'm sure it will win.

Erock Zombie, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

no love for s/t? I like it almost as much as De Stijl (prob. my favorite)

will, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

yeah the first two are pretty close in quality, sound is perhaps a bit more refined and developed on the second one.

elephant

white blood cells

icky thump

it's gotta be de stijl for me.

spastic heritage, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

White Blood Cells just squeaks by De Stijl. The rest are all tied for second with the exception of Get Behind me Satan which is by far their worst.

Preview of the Matrix 12, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 02:31 (eighteen years ago)

make that tied for third

Preview of the Matrix 12, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 03:16 (eighteen years ago)

yeah the first two are pretty close in quality, sound is perhaps a bit more refined and developed on the second one.

Nah, songwriting is already improving on the second album.

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 03:44 (eighteen years ago)

Icky Thump has really grown on me over the past week ... I shouldn't have been so initially disappointed

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 03:45 (eighteen years ago)

ELEPHANT BY A LOT

gman, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 04:24 (eighteen years ago)

I should give Icky Thump a third chance, I guess. I still it sags a lot in the middle, not even counting CONNNQUUEEEEEEESSSSSSTTT!!!!

kenan, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 04:34 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah i would. Give it more chances that is. I needed to. It's def a "grower". only problem it had was that 'Get Behind Me Satan' is one of the best rock albums of the 00's..

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 05:06 (eighteen years ago)

Top 5 reasons I voted for the first one.

1) Yeah monkey! Jimmy The Exploder = love at first sight
2) Cannon is my all-time favorite WS song.
3) Stop Breakin Down, The Big Three Killed My Baby, Sugar Never Tasted So Good,
Astro, Broken Bricks, Slicker Drips, Screwdriver, Little People.
4) I Fought Piranhas one of my favorite WS tracks, and one of my all-time favorite closers.
5) Cuties dedicated it to Son House. You know their heart is in the right place.

I have White Blood Cells and Icky Thump tied for second.
The other 3 I have tied for 3rd, but I love all 6. I'm most positive that 30 years from now
I'll be playing these as loud as New World Order housing will allow me to.

I went with White Blood Cells.

So far (after spending a few days in my CD changer), Icky Thump is by far my least favorite, but I do like a couple tracks, so maybe it will grow on me.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

4) I Fought Piranhas one of my favorite WS tracks, and one of my all-time favorite closers.

very much on the money

"Conquest" evokes Leslie Nielsen in Mexican drag – it's great!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

White Blood Cells just squeaks by De Stijl. The rest are all tied for second with the exception of Get Behind me Satan which is by far their worst.

i wholeheartedly agree

bakerstreetsaxsolo, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

Swap the WBC for DS and I agree.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

I've been fearing this poll. Icky Thump is still a little close in time - what the heck, White Blood Cells.

the Dirt, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

I just find WBC to be too bloated, especially in the latter half.

Good record, but way too long, in retrospect.

Erock Zombie, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

fwiw:

White Blood Cells

Get Behind Me Satan

don't know the debut or new album yet.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

like I said before, I would be curious to hear any of the numerous WBC boosters on this thread elaborate on why they think its the best - I don't get it.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

Tape Store: Why would you be upset if Elephant wins? That's almost their best album. No, wait...it is. It is their best album!

brightscreamer, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

whichever one has black math is the best one, it's a doozy. too much of their stuff is deadly dull despite all the flailing and carrying on (not to mention the 'signifyin' like on that new single...shudder).

tremendoid, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

Which new single would that be, "Icky Thump" or "Rag and Bone"? (not sure if the latter's a single yet but if I recall correctly it's next)

Telephone thing, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

'rag and bone' i'm pretty sure. listened to a Jack interview last week, seems like a decent guy.

tremendoid, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

"like I said before, I would be curious to hear any of the numerous WBC boosters on this thread elaborate on why they think its the best - I don't get it."

I like to put it on because the first 10 songs just flow for me. So I'll say the songs, I guess.

Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground
Hotel Yorba
I'm Finding It Harder to Be a Gentleman
Fell in Love With a Girl
Expecting
Little Room
The Union Forever
The Same Boy You've Always Known
We're Going to Be Friends
Offend in Every Way

nicky lo-fi, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

I never really been able to love Elephant. Some great tracks - 7 Nation, Black Math, Hardest Button etc - but some filler too. That squirrel song is annoying and the cover of Just DOn't KNow What To With Myself, while suitably wracked sounding, beats Bacharach's gorgeous melody into pulp. Also that awful Kate Moss video spoiled it forever. To be fair, the band were reportedly unhappy with it.

WBS and DS are my faves for sure. I think WBS will always be my favourite as it was my first WS album and so refreshing to me at the time. I'd not been keeping up with new guitar bands and it reconnected me with that, as well as leading to my discovery of a rich underground and all the good things I'd missed.

First album rocks and Satan is really fun. After Elephant, which seemed self-consciously their world beating big album, this was where they got weird and fucked with the formula. Didn't always work, some of it was underdeveloped, but it was pretty great and sounded amazing live, especially Red Rain. Holy shit!

Still not heard Icky Thump. I suppose I'll get round to it, I guess I'm just not that desperate to hear them. But I'm sure there's much to enjoy, especially the bagpipes, heh heh.

Stew, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 23:21 (eighteen years ago)

I like to put it on because the first 10 songs just flow for me.

For me it's the last four. With the exception of "I'm Finding it Harder" and maybe a few others, these last few songs are what make the album for me. They flow so well that I kinda consider them one long song. I never listen to just one, always all four in a row.

"I Can't Wait"
"Now Mary"
"I Can Learn"
"This Protector"

What a way to end an album!!! Especially with "Aluminum" sort of setting them apart from the rest of it and adding a little bookend to the "Same Boy" -> "Rat" sequence... Quite possibly my favorite album of all time and certainly one that made a huge impression on me.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 03:14 (fifteen years ago)

so are they really done for good or what?

akm, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 04:04 (fifteen years ago)

man, i hope not

ksh, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 04:20 (fifteen years ago)

they'd been reliably releasing an album every summer every 2 years -- Elephant, 2003; Get Behind Me Satan, 2005; Icky Thump, 2007 -- in which case we would've been due last summer. and now it looks all we'll get this year is some crummy live album. doesn't look good

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 04:31 (fifteen years ago)

I don't believe for a minute they are done for good. As soon as people stop caring about Dead Weather or his side project of the month, he'll round up Meg for another surefire seller.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 04:32 (fifteen years ago)

lukevalentine, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 13:20 (fifteen years ago)

I couldn't care less about most live albums but this is really good - suitably ragged and sweaty-sounding. The Union Forever sounds like someone having a nervous breakdown and Seven Nation Army has an amazing coda which sounds uncannily like Underworld's Rez.

gotanynewsstory? (Dorianlynskey), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 13:45 (fifteen years ago)

they're such a great live band... for the longest time, my favourite stripes 'album' has been a CD i made myself of their first two Peel sessions, one recorded at Peel Acres itself, which are totally off the hook. 'when i hear my name', from july 2001, is just crazed - Jack's equipment goes totally awry after the first verse, but the way he wrenches back into the song, from feedback and chaos, reminds me of just how great this group is live. and there's a deranged medley of 'lookin at you/st james infirmary blues' from the peel acres session which just slays me every time i hear it, switching from home-made garage-rock hurtle to blood-splattered vaudeville in a flash.

ade or nabisco - i get em confused (stevie), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 13:56 (fifteen years ago)

raconteurs are pretty fiendish live, too - their cover of 'bang bang' from the 2006 tour is sublime.

ade or nabisco - i get em confused (stevie), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 13:57 (fifteen years ago)

their forum gig from 2001ish is amazing. tbh most of the bootlegs i had of the elephant tour were almost all brilliant. after that my interest in seeing them live declined a bit as i had to put up with tracks like doorbell.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 14:05 (fifteen years ago)

ill prob buy this on vinyl tho.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 14:06 (fifteen years ago)

but their albums are:
elephant>>WBC>>DS>>TWS>>icky thump/satan

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 14:08 (fifteen years ago)

satan's their best studio album imho, but we've had this debate before i think

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 14:16 (fifteen years ago)

i might reinvestigate but im doubtful.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 14:21 (fifteen years ago)

Icky Thump was robbed here, I think.

All of their albums seem to me worth owning/listening to. They were great.

www.gbokchoymail.com (admrl), Friday, 13 July 2012 22:38 (thirteen years ago)

they were.

really don't get why folks here are so stuck on White Blood Cells - is it a "first album I heard" kind of thing...? Cuz the albums on either side of it are way better imho.

the alternate vision continues his vision quest! (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 July 2012 23:01 (thirteen years ago)

i was a little down on white blood cells at the time of its release. it seemed to restate things that de stijl had done much more interestingly (despite the undeniably pop immediacy of "fell in love with a girl"), and i was still very much in love with the raw intensity of the debut. to my mind, elephant was the great leap forward, though it definitely dragged a bit here and there.

in the long run, i see WBC less as a weak sister to their other albums, and more as an intersection point where all their strengths as a band come together successfully. it's got enough sprawl and ambition to impress, but it never wears out its welcome. it's still got some of the scrappy punk exuberance of their early work (a quality they'd soon shed), but the songwriting is more distinctive and the production is much improved. it covers at least as much ground emotionally and musically as the albums that bookend it, but is more radio ready than de stijl and less ponderous than elephant.

contenderizer, Friday, 13 July 2012 23:25 (thirteen years ago)

for me they were a definite 'off the bus' after Elephant, even though Alice liked them enough to pester me for 'Icky Thump'

Mark G, Friday, 13 July 2012 23:46 (thirteen years ago)

I wish I'd been here to do a write-in for "Redd Blood Cells." Best thing they ever did.

dlp9001, Saturday, 14 July 2012 01:05 (thirteen years ago)

I had never really listened to anything after White Blood Cells until literally this last month and it was a real treat to discover that there is still so much great stuff there. There is a lot of music weirder than The White Stripes, but for such an apparently popular band they were weirder than I gave them credit for. Good weird.

www.gbokchoymail.com (admrl), Saturday, 14 July 2012 03:16 (thirteen years ago)

get behind me satan is still my favourite, but they're all great, and de stijl will always have a soft spot in my heart because it was my first.
