'Orinoco (Mad) Flow' if only cos of it being sampled on Rebel MC's 'Tribal Base'

blueski, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 00:30 (eighteen years ago)

I gotta go for Oxygene.

Trayce, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

Jan Hammer any & every time

blunt, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

"orinoco flow" should be judged "bomb" on its own merits

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure I bought that Jarre album on vinyl for cheapo at a yard sale a year ago and never listened to it. Really need to pull that out.

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

hmmm "crockett" or "toxygene", tough call

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

you're mixing yr Orb w/yr Jarre there

blunt, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 01:52 (eighteen years ago)

it's true

i started a post about how it was intersting that "crockett" and "oxygene" were both improved via 90s dance remixing but that "the x-files theme" got worse and whether that meant that the "the x-files theme" wins

see also charlemagne palestine's comment about the most successful minimal composer of the 20th century being john williams for the "star wars" theme ... by that criteria the x-files theme should probably be judged with the greats

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 02:04 (eighteen years ago)

which one of these could the average folk on the street hum?

probably most likely it'd be "x-files", though i admit i was just humming it to myself but then i realized i was humming "dr who"

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 02:05 (eighteen years ago)

the X-Files theme is great!

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

it's Hammer time

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

"My Wife with Champagne Shoulders" - Mark Isham

What's this? Is it as terrible as the title makes it sound?

Neil S, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 11:50 (eighteen years ago)

Deep Forest.

matt2, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

That monk chant hook from Enigma's "Return to Innocence" is impossible to resist.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

curtis i kiss you for this poll

max, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

and i cant believe no ones mentioned the theme from the mission which is one of my most played songs on itunes

max, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

"Crockett's Theme" - Jan Hammer

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

this poll is my gift to you, max.

I'm really having a hard time deciding here.

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

Is it okay to vote in this poll if you find these songs campy?

Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

yes

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

theme from the mission for sure

deej, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

The Promise = the theme from 'the piano'!! i should rep for that, but i like Oxygene a bit better.

, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Thursday, 28 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

crockett's theme definitely wins this one. jan hammer is unstoppable.

the table is the table, Thursday, 28 June 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for Sadeness because I am totally lame

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 28 June 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

i really want to post more on this thread, but my words are so tainted compared to the purity of the moods embodied in these songs

max, Friday, 29 June 2007 02:31 (eighteen years ago)

There aren't many songs I hate more than "Lily Was Here."

Eric H., Friday, 29 June 2007 02:34 (eighteen years ago)

"orinocco flow" i guess, though i've been digging on the oxygene album alot recently.

why doesn't this cd include "forbidden colours"?

creme1, Friday, 29 June 2007 02:42 (eighteen years ago)

also, the sakamoto side of the last emperor soundtrack is much much better than the byrne side

creme1, Friday, 29 June 2007 02:43 (eighteen years ago)

it turns out the Jarre album I have is Equinoxe, not Oxygene

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 29 June 2007 02:52 (eighteen years ago)

Hey Forbidden Colours isnt that cheesy! :( I love that song.

Trayce, Friday, 29 June 2007 04:45 (eighteen years ago)

I have Oxygene btw Curtis. And Zoolook. I think.

Trayce, Friday, 29 June 2007 04:45 (eighteen years ago)

Crocket's Theme. Always.

Edward Bax, Friday, 29 June 2007 05:49 (eighteen years ago)

who said it was cheesy? it's one of my favourite songs! (and it is totally cheesy!)

creme1, Friday, 29 June 2007 08:22 (eighteen years ago)

It is bootiful.

Trayce, Friday, 29 June 2007 09:09 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Friday, 29 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

disappointed w/ adiemus's showing

max, Friday, 29 June 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

No one voted for Tubular Bells!? Thats kind of suprising.

Trayce, Saturday, 30 June 2007 00:33 (eighteen years ago)

Read it again!

Mark G, Saturday, 30 June 2007 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

Oh god. One vote sorry. Its saturday morning here and I think I'm gettin a cold and I need coffee and I'm in a bit of a cranky mood.

Trayce, Saturday, 30 June 2007 01:07 (eighteen years ago)

Trayce, Saturday, 30 June 2007 01:08 (eighteen years ago)

woah, what does Nyman's stuff sound like? i've read his Cage book for a class before, had no idea that he was a new age moodsynth composer.

why the hell did Deep Forest only get four votes???

rock_is_dead, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

because it's balls, but 'Yeha Noha' is seriously the worst shit of the 90s or indeed any decade

I wish more New Age music was like "Orinoco Flow", so much of it is so tuneless, but that one's a classic.

Really surprised that "Children" by Robert Miles isn't on here, but maybe it wasn't released yet

frogbs, Monday, 1 August 2011 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

1994 iirc?

basically its what i wish all these songs outside of "Oronico Flow" and "Oxygene 4" were more like

frogbs, Wednesday, 5 March 2014 16:14 (eleven years ago)

I kind of miss Deep Forest actually

Oh god, me too.

Eric H., Wednesday, 5 March 2014 16:18 (eleven years ago)

What was the other song that came out about the same time as Deep Forest and also (IIRC) sampled pygmy chanting? Was it another Enigma song?

inside out trousers (dog latin), Wednesday, 5 March 2014 16:20 (eleven years ago)

Well there were several other Pure Moods volumes that followed this, with the seres ending in 2004. That last volume has the likes of Joss Stone, Kings of Convience, Dido, Pink Martini, The Polyphonic Spree and the acoustic version of Dirty Vegas's Days Go By on it.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 5 March 2014 16:21 (eleven years ago)

LOL

inside out trousers (dog latin), Wednesday, 5 March 2014 16:22 (eleven years ago)

For more information on where the Pure Moods series went after the first volume, consult your local Wikipedia.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 5 March 2014 16:32 (eleven years ago)

Looking back at the OG Pure Moods, at the time it was probably the kind of thing that was considered extremely naff, music for your dad to play in the car on summer holidays etc... But what with bona fide classics like Tubular Bells and Oxygene, critically reappraised tracks like Orinoco Flow, appearances from David Byrne, Angelo Badalamenti, Jan Hammer and Morricone; not to mention the nineties eurocheese nostlagia of Enigma and Deep Forest, this looks kind of essential.

inside out trousers (dog latin), Wednesday, 5 March 2014 16:35 (eleven years ago)

much like the "Tubular Bells" series it appears this dropped off pretty sharply from volume 1. though I do think Moby's "Porcelain" was a pretty obvious choice

frogbs, Wednesday, 5 March 2014 16:36 (eleven years ago)

Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence is another good omission from the first vol.

inside out trousers (dog latin), Wednesday, 5 March 2014 16:37 (eleven years ago)

you know "3 + 3" by Vangelis would've been pretty tight on this one

frogbs, Wednesday, 5 March 2014 16:40 (eleven years ago)

While I didn't grow up with Pure Moods, my mom owned the two volumes of Escapes, a Canadian compilation series that had quite a bit of overlap with Pure Moods, except with worse cover art:
Escapes
Escapes II

MarkoP, Wednesday, 5 March 2014 16:46 (eleven years ago)

12. "Yeha-Noha (Wishes Of Happiness And Prosperity)" - Sacred Spirit 0

A former boss of mine used to play this on repeat for an hour on a Friday afternoon before going for a pint. He's a super-stressed manager and the least "Native American chanting about being at one with the world" guy ever. I'm not aware of him ever listening to any other music.

every time you sneer at "white boys with guitars" a Ramone dies (onimo), Wednesday, 5 March 2014 17:06 (eleven years ago)

What was the other song that came out about the same time as Deep Forest and also (IIRC) sampled pygmy chanting? Was it another Enigma song?

Enigma had a big hit in 1994 with tune that sampled Native American chanting, maybe that's what you mean?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rk_sAHh9s08

Or maybe you're talking about Deep Forest's follow-up to "Sweet Lullaby"?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x05BUoXCXjM

Btw, contrary to common belief, "Sweet Lullaby" is not based on pygmy chant, but on a song recorded at Solomon Islands. There's a video on Youtube where some dude travels to Solomon Islands to track the origin of the tune, and interviews some family members of the singer sampled on the track (she had already died by then).

I have a huge affection for New Pure Moods, a sort of cut-and-shut of the first couple of volumes, which I bought when it came out in my early teens:
https://www.discogs.com/Various-New-Pure-Moods/release/2738830

No Orinoco Flow, oddly, but I remember the finding the lines it drew between new age, world beat stuff, soundtracks, modern classical and trance opened a lot of music doors for me. That kind of scene-trotting is fairly commonplace today, but felt new to my ears at the time.

(Also, the US series and the UK series seem to have very similar track listings in a variety of different configurations, which I find endlessly confusing)

There aren't many songs I hate more than "Lily Was Here."

I somehow never knew of this song until just now. It definitely evokes its era, I’ll say that for it.
