You have, say, "Wet Wet Wet"
Apparently taken from "Getting, having and holding" Scritti. "his face was wet, wet with tears"
added another "wet" for the hell of it.
Why not say "We love this band and no other" ? It's ACH! bad.

Sometimes it's a good thing. A Certain Ratio from "The True Wheel" by Brian Eno isn't bad.

I wish I had phrased the title of this thread more like the title of this one.
― Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)
Are bands who take their name straight from another bands song title included in this? Because that's even worse. Like Eric's Trip.
― sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)
What about bands that take their song titles from other bands' song titles?
― Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)
Did the modern lovers take their name from The True Wheel? (NB: this may be my favorite rock eno)

What about people who take their login names from song titles? :D
Sonderangerbot, My band is named after a La Dusseldorf song!

xpost: No. They were going for years beforehand.

Is the song a nod to them? I like Mark E Smith's nods to people in songs:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badly_Drawn_Boy
# Famously, Mark E Smith once hailed down Gough's car mistaking it for a taxi. Honourably Gough drove Smith home and was thanked later when Smith realised who he was. He later contributed to The Fall's song "Calendar". # The Fall also refer to a 'Badly Boy Drawn' with an 'acoustic case' in the 2002 track Susan Vs Youthclub.[1]

Catsup dude, it's cool in german obviously.
― sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)
I like the Lilac Time (from "River Man" by Nick Drake)
― Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)
xxpost: I think it's probably a nod to the Modern Lovers. Eno was living in New York at the time where the Modern Lovers were based. In fact they had broken up by the time this album was released. Then there's the Jerry Harrison connection, which proves nothing but is interesting.
"A Certain Ratio" was snagged by Eno from something Hitler said about Jews in Europe, I believe.

― sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)
Supposedly, Eric's Trip were good, someone said once.
― dean ge, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

― everything, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)
Radiohead - great band, mediocre song Warm Jets - great song, ok band (at least I liked the way the guitars sounded on the album. haven't heard it in ages tho)
― willem, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)
So maybe a thread for bands named after lyrics from 70s Brian Eno solo albums?
― Bill in Chicago, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, Talk Talk did this to themselves!
(They were previously called "The Reaction" and had "Talk talk talk talk" on a various artists comp)
― Mark G, Thursday, 28 June 2007 07:51 (eighteen years ago)
Radio Birdman.
Named after a misheard lyric from The Stooges' 1970 ("radio burnin' ")
― StanM, Thursday, 28 June 2007 08:05 (eighteen years ago)
Deacon Blue, please die.
― Noodle Vague, Thursday, 28 June 2007 08:42 (eighteen years ago)
That band Boys Don't Cry were pretty dreadful from memory.
― Trayce, Thursday, 28 June 2007 09:08 (eighteen years ago)
But Cocteau Twins got their name off an old Simple Minds song. So yes, it is a good thing sometimes!
Then there's bands who take their name from part of another bands name, Elastica from Hey Elastica
― Tom D., Thursday, 28 June 2007 09:16 (eighteen years ago)
and Coldplay, who took their name from one of Chris Martin's mates who had a band. Called Coldplay.
― Mark G, Thursday, 28 June 2007 09:21 (eighteen years ago)
Cocteau Twins got their name off Simple Minds who got their name off David Bowie, who I believe got his name off a dry cleaners.
