so, am i the only one excited about this, or has anyone here seen any of these 'secret' gigs and can tell us this is going to suck the big one :

Stiff Records is proud to announce the debut single from The Producers: a true super-group, in the proper, old-fashioned sense of the word. As individual producers and artists they've scored over 200 hit singles and albums, now they've come together to get back to basics and write and perform in their own right. The Producers are:

Lol Creme: guitars/vocals
(10cc, Godley & Creme, Kate Bush)
Trevor Horn: bass/vocals
(Buggles, Yes, Pet Shop Boys, tATu)
Stephen Lipson: guitars
(Rolling Stones, McCartney, Annie Lennox)
Chris Braide: keyboards/vocals (Will Young, Kylie Minogue)
Ash Soan: drums (Marianne Faithful, Faithless, Natasha Bedingfield)

The Producers started out playing a string of impromptu, secret gigs at venues like the Camden Barfly at the end of last year, joined on stage by friends and collaborators like Will Young and Jamie Cullum. Since then, they've been holed up at Trevor Horn's infamous Sarm West studios recording their debut album and single, Barking Up The Right Tree.

Having been responsible for some of the most lavish and extravagant pop music and videos of the past 20 years, The Producers is a group getting back to their roots, playing and writing for themselves and creating something quite different: hand-made and hand- crafted. A beautiful, shuffling ballad, Barking Up The Right Tree is a perfect summer single, whether it's sunny beaches or washed-out seaside towns.

As well as taking lead vocals on Barking up the Right Tree, Lol Creme delivers a unique, hand- drawn animated video. The genius behind classics like Frankie's Two Tribes and Herbie Hancock's Rockit, this is Lol's first new video for 13 years and his first ever animated work.

YAWN.

That said maybe the video will be interesting.

the cover art for the single aint exactly going to get the blood rushing ned, so if its part of the animation prepare to be, umm, yawning some more.

I'll only accept this 'hand-crafted' nonsense if they're actually etching the CDRs with a handheld needle.

doh. now i look like a fucking PR machine.
even now, i never thought to look on myspace.
30 seconds into it, and i'm bored by the Traveling Wilburys styled crap.

Ah, no worries. Truth be told, I didn't think the song was that bad when I heard it a few weeks ago.

i've been told that the trademark big production tracks are on the 'b-side'. time will tell ..

mark e, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 07:48 (eighteen years ago)

I look forward to their cover of Faust's "Don't Take Roots."

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 07:57 (eighteen years ago)

"Barking up the right tree" is a title that gives me no hope for anything too spectacular or special, I have to say.

Mark G, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 08:50 (eighteen years ago)

It reminds me of that one about "stepping in the right direction" by soul passion honesty not plastic cocktail crap 1983 two-hit wonders The Truf.

Also, Back On The Right Track by Sly Stone was an obituary prompter if ever there were one.

Yes, but Confusion hits us every time!

Ah, the days when buying records got you t-shirts at the same time for free.

Having said that, I did have a chance of getting a free Adidas t-shirt with Rod Stewart's "Baby Jane" single. No. You have to draw the line somewhere!

Mark G, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 09:02 (eighteen years ago)

Wasn't "Baby Jane" the one with the free beach ball? I know that Annabel Lamb's "Riders On The Storm" came with the free video.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 09:04 (eighteen years ago)

Well, i'm sure the outcry was about giving something that had no actual connection with the record which brought the big freebie fest to an end.

Yep, the video one.

The bananarama's "Cruel Summer" came w/ free "really sayin" 12" and was autographed, and oh was it a frisbee or a beachball? I forget.

Mark G, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 09:08 (eighteen years ago)

If this was total over-the-top bombast I might be interested. The first song is pleasant enough folk-pop. I like the synth poppy Freeway better.

leavethecapital, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

Freeway isn't bad at all -- def. has Horn's stamp on it.

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and Marcello: don't forget Heard Ya Missed Me, Well I'm Back...

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

Indeed. And to complete that particularly lamentable trilogy, let's (not) hear it for Ain't But The One Way...
