what kind of crowd is it btw

The Macallan 18 Year, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:59 (seventeen years ago)

also "dance floor filler" is a term that dj types might us to describe a track that they would put between two anthems to give the crowd a catch to catch their breathe, buy a drink, make out with the dj

For the most part, the crowd is pretty narrow minded and annoyingly won't dance to something they don't know. There are the standards i usually play (I want you Back, Shout, Cotton Eyed Joe, Jockjams Megamix, Twist and Shout, I predict a Riot, Panic, Blue Monday, Ignition Remix, I Feel Love etc...) but I yearn to get away with more than that. I'm hoping to give some different songs a try this weekend.

I want songs that will get people dancing and moving despite the fact that they aren't as familiar with them or familiar at all.

try the Knife, Prince, Doctors Cat (and basically italo in general), something other than Blue Monday by New Order (Everything's Gone Green works well), "Percolator," "Never Let Me Down Again," anything by Clipse, Kylie Minogue, TI, etc.

i mean, this is what i would use to build up to things, get people drunk enough and dancing enough so that i could slip into house for a bit. also i did an all-request hour at a party once and this was what people wanted to hear. also a lot of Biggie.

"You Spin Me Round"

What kind of house do you usually slip into? Yeah, I sometimes put on Temptation, True Faith or even some Joy Division (Transmission and Love Will Tear Us Apart work very well, as they should). Everything's Gone Green should do the trick. I have tried Prince many times but no one seems to give him a chance, doesn't matter which song I play. TI's a good one, he works wonders. Clipse and Kylie Minogue will be used, as will Never Let Me Down Again (although Enjoy the Silence seems to be accepted).

And The Macallan: Those are some good suggestions. Groove is in the Heart, Music Sounds Better with You and Rendez-Vu are all fairly popular at these gatherings. I also have to mention that No Diggity and Regulate never fail.

Bizarre Inc. - "I'm Gonna Get You"
currently: Justice - "D.A.N.C.E." doesn't seem to matter which mix.

Justin Timberlake - "Rock Your Body"

Kind of surprised but this still seems to work absolutely every time at my sets.

Tom Tom Club
LCD Soundsystem - Get Innocuous
Prince - 'Erotic city' is hard not to dance to.

I think the fastest I've ever gotten back on the dance floor was when the DJ spun "Living on Video" by Trans X, but I am an anomaly

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

The Time - Cool
The Time - Jungle Love

HI IM COLELGE PARTY DJ THREAD

i identify, is why i can make fun

deej, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 03:35 (seventeen years ago)

prince can be hard bcuz his rhythms aren't really funk/r&bish, kind of stilted and rock-y in parts, he gets by a lot on recognition factor

deej, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 03:35 (seventeen years ago)

some good suggestions so far. need some more songs to get people dancing though.

impudent harlot, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 06:25 (seventeen years ago)

anyway the first answer in this thread is the right one

impudent harlot, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 06:25 (seventeen years ago)

This probably isn't "getting away" from your usual stuff, but maybe:
some Madonna tracks (esp. "Hung Up" and "Into the Groove")
Ace of Base - "The Sign"
Notorious BIG - "Mo' Money, Mo Problems"
Tupac - "California Love"
Missy - "Get Ur Freak On" and "Work It"]
Nelly Furtado feat. Timbaland - "Promiscuous"
Dirty Vegas - "Days Go By"
Daft Punk - "One More Time"
Ying Yang Twins - "Wait (The Whisper Song)"
Ciara feat. Ludacris - "Oh"
Abba - "Dancing Queen"
TLC - "No Scrubs"
Britney Spears - "Toxic"
Justin Timberlake - (any fast songs of FS/LS)
...and you could always try for complete nostalgia (e.g. "He Loves U Not," "Show Me Love," "Flagpole Sitta")

Tape Store, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 07:13 (seventeen years ago)

randomrules, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 10:11 (seventeen years ago)

The Jungle Brothers - I'll House You

I once heard this three times at the same party, alright, maybe one of those times was freom hearing it from the venue upstairs while walking in, but still. Glorious either way.
