Which musicians from the pre-rock era are still performing today?

Having witnessed the last date on the last ever Andy Williams tour last night (in Nottingham, though he continues to perform at his own theatre in Missouri), and in the light of the death of George Melly, I was wondering which other pre-rock stars were still out there, performing regularly.

My criteria: they must have made their professional debut before 1955, in a musical genre which pre-dates rock and roll.

My list thus far:

Humphrey Lyttleton (86)
Tony Bennett (80)
Cleo Laine & John Dankworth (both 79)
Al Martino (79)
Andy Williams (79)
James Last (78)
Ornette Coleman (77)
Debbie Reynolds (75)
Petula Clark (75)

I’m ruling out:

Rolf Harris (77) – a TV presenter before 1955, but didn’t debut as a singer until the late 1950s.
George Jones (76) - debuted around 1955/56.
Shirley Bassey (70) – made her debut in 1956, aged 19.
Jack Jones (69) - debuted in 1957, also aged 19.

Who else should go on the list? There cann't be too many left...

Wade Mainer played banjo at his 100th birthday party this spring, over seventy years after making his recorded debut (1935-ish) with his brother's Mountaineers. He was born two years before Maybelle Carter, which is mind-boggling.

one year passes...

this thread is a regular dead pool, isn't it? a few country stars (aside from those mentioned above) are still active:

Bobby Osborne (79)(of the Osborne Brothers) performs without his brother now & still has that wonderfully smooth tenor voice.

Wanda Jackson (73) began recording country music in 1954, so she counts.

Jimmy C. Newman (83) still performs at the Opry every week.

Jim Smoak (a fiddler for Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys, who also recorded some Cajun-inflected bluegrass with his own group) is 77.

the country siblings The Browns (78, 76, and 73) still perform together occasionally, but the youngest one doesn't count b/c she debuted in 1955.

Ray Price is 85 and still touring.

Curly Seckler (91) has been performing since 1935 and has worked with just about every bluegrass legend you can name.

Kitty Wells (91) Johnnie Wright (96) have been married for 73 years, but they haven't performed live in over a decade, so to hell with them (kidding).

old bluegrass dude Mac Wiseman (85) apparently stopped touring in 2007.

one of the Andrews Sisters (Patty, age 92) is still alive, but she doesn't, like, do anything.

I don't remember when his debut was, but Mose Allison is still touring.

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Friday, 11 February 2011 04:33 (fifteen years ago)

Mose Allison's first lp was in '57, but he was already 30, and probably had been at it for awhile then.

Your cousin, Marvin Cobain (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 11 February 2011 05:38 (fifteen years ago)

Might not exactly fit the description, but Quincy Jones got his start with Dizzy Gillespie in '55 or '56.

Is Dick Raaymakers still composing?

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Friday, 11 February 2011 05:58 (fifteen years ago)

Or Morton Subotnick?

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Friday, 11 February 2011 05:58 (fifteen years ago)

Morton Subotnick is not only still composing, he's playing Silver Apples of the Moon live here in Vienna next week.

Marshall Allen is 93 and tirelessly leading the Sun Ra Arkestra.
