Recommend to me books about Australian music (no genre restrictions)

Specifically I'm after well written, non-technical histories of specific movements. I'm looking for books covering a wide range of genres, including, but not limited to, rock, jazz, classical, indigenous and electronic, to beef up our music library here at work. I'm not after 'how to' books - eg, how to promote your band on the internet, how to negotiate a contract or land a record deal - we have plenty of those already. Cheers!

I take your point, scott, but I wouldn't consider myself an expert, not at all. My music journalism days are ten years behind me and I'm out of touch.

If I were recommending books I'd probably start with everything ever written by Clinton Walker, I suppose.

Thanks also to you and badg for your recommendations so far - have a prawn on the barbie from me.

Sorry, shrimp.

I should stress that don't just want any book with Australian music themes, esp not the commercial ones or general guides, or song books, and certainly not academic compendiums of musicological articles - I'm after well written histories and biographies for the general reader.

haitch, that's the kind of book I mean - though I believe we already have that one, and most of Clinton Walker's stuff as well.

scott, you are uncovering some gold there. Some green and gold, even.

that other clinton walker book 'stranded' is fantastic. though it's a bit naughty the way he inserts his own bands in there!

Has anybody read David Nichols book "The Go-Betweens"? Nichols was in the Canaanes

curmudgeon, Monday, 9 July 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

Umm that Stevie Wright one isn't particularly well written. That guy's lived though, holy shit.

re: Stevie Wright - Jack Marx's "Sorry" is meant to be good, isn't it?

avoid: The Sell-In

energy flash gordon, Monday, 9 July 2007 09:02 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, I enjoyed 'Sorry', though it's a harrowing read. The sell-In I didn't see the point of: and there's a lot of Oz rock books like that. Most devote a chapter or two to Powderchair, always a warning sign.

moley, Monday, 9 July 2007 09:14 (eighteen years ago)

Jack Marx is a cock on the Age website, is his other writing any good?

Trayce, Monday, 9 July 2007 09:15 (eighteen years ago)

not really, but the book is quite gripping
