Ok THESE songs pretty much all blow.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 00:04 (eighteen years ago)

I completely forgot that Fastball ever existed.

Z S, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 00:25 (eighteen years ago)

who the fuck is fastball? it is 'All My Life' in a walk. then Backstreet Boys and toss the rest for scrap.

tremendoid, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 00:29 (eighteen years ago)

i take that back i like mmbop a little and i miss everclear man's voice

tremendoid, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)

"Karma Police".

Although the first Now, That's What I Called Music was actually with Culture Club, Paul Young, Duran Duran, Kajagoogoo, Heaven 17, Human League etc.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

That's why I specified US...I think someone did a poll for the first UK volume a while ago though.

musically, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

ahhhhhhhhhhh...nostalgia. The soundtrack to my early years.

Like every other boy, I pretended to hate "MMM Bop," but deep down, I loved it. "All My Life" was my slow jam...both "The Way" and "Flagpole Sitta" made me feel cool. I always skipped Imajin and Radiohead...But my answer?

"Never Ever" forever.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 01:57 (eighteen years ago)

I thought "Flagpole Sitta" was so edgy. And 10 years later I finally get the whole "when I'm feeling naughty/I run it up the flagpole" line.

musically, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 02:01 (eighteen years ago)

'Flagpole Sitta' and 'Sex & Candy' are surprisingly solid (compared to the indie and alt-rock hits of 1998)

Tempted to vote for "Zoot Suit Riot."

milo z, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

Zoot Suit Riot is a severe pain in mah balls.

Drooone, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

MAN 10 YEARS AGO SUCKED

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 02:12 (eighteen years ago)

brilliant poll.
"barbie girl" is about bubble gum as bubble gum will ever get... so i'm with that.

Jordan Sargent, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 02:13 (eighteen years ago)

"Together Again"'s retro thing has somehow aged terribly, but it still got my vote of this lineup.

Guilty pleasure: "Anytime."

Eric H., Tuesday, 10 July 2007 02:43 (eighteen years ago)

"Anytime" is tremendous. No guilt needed. So dark and ambient and haunting. It's "All My Life"'s creepy ( and less played-out) cousin.

<i>Still have your picture in the frame
Hear your footsteps down the hall
I swear I hear your voice driving me insane
Oh how I wish that you would call</i>

Gets my vote, anyway.

2. "Say You'll Be There"
3. "Flagpole Sitta"
4. "All My Life"
5. "Together Again"

The Reverend, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 03:21 (eighteen years ago)

Damn tags.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 03:21 (eighteen years ago)

I always skipped Imajin and Radiohead

The two token "not hits but let's tack them on anyhow" tracks. I was listening to the radio pretty obsessively in 1998 and I cannot for the life of me remember hearing either of those songs. All the other ones though...I can still sing them backwards and forwards.

musically, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)

the Imajin song's OK in a "didn't have to hear it too often and it broke up the monotony when it did play" way

Eric H., Tuesday, 10 July 2007 04:18 (eighteen years ago)

Hold on, there was a band called "Cherry Poppin' Daddies" which even had a hit song?!! How did that happen?!

Tuomas, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 05:56 (eighteen years ago)

These threads should be great

Cunga, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 06:05 (eighteen years ago)

I'm excited about the vol. 2 thread!

Tape Store, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 06:10 (eighteen years ago)

Hold on, there was a band called "Cherry Poppin' Daddies" which even had a hit song?!! How did that happen?!

we would never tolerate such silly band names in Europe.

blueski, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 09:30 (eighteen years ago)

this album is tremendous until the last few songs!

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 10:28 (eighteen years ago)

Ok THESE songs pretty much all blow.

no YOU blow

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 10:28 (eighteen years ago)

"Karma Police" did sell, but obviously to different people than the ones who usually bought singles, so I guess the kids weren't into it much.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

Loads of students bought singles and liked Radiohead and bought Radiohead singles.

blueski, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

Vol.4 had the Eiffel/Sonique one-two punch

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

god all this is bringing back horrible memories

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

Vol 2 is the FIRST CD I EVER BOUGHT so I am pretty jazzed for it too.

musically, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

billstevejim, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

I actually really like the s/t Marcy Playground album.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

Karma Police was a video hit, and it did ok on Modern Rock radio (peaked @ #14 and IIRC it had some staying power)

C. Grisso/McCain, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 23:24 (eighteen years ago)

Karma Police was a buzz clip on MTV, which were played often for a month or 2 at a time. There was a time when lots of kids would come home from school, turn on MTV, and see Thom Yorke sitting in the back of a car. It wasn't just a dream; this really did happen.

TS: All Saints: "Never Ever" v. Lil' Jon/Eastside Boyz: "Neva Eva"

Jordan Sargent, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 03:17 (eighteen years ago)

"MMMBop" for me. Thank gawd I was old enough at the time so I didn't have to pretend to hate it.

I have never understood the love for "Never Ever." What am I missing?

Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

You can comb my hair... undress me anywhere...

Come on Barbi, let's go party! Ooo. Ooo. Ooo. Ooo.

It's the only song (besides Mmmbop) on that list that I remember the lyrics and tune to. Thus, it gets my vote.

Mordechai Shinefield, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

several semi-classics there, and "mmmbop" is indisputable. but i voted for "the way" because a.) catchy as hell and b.) i never understood what the hell happened in that song. parents abandoning their kids? it's like the psycho inverse of "she's leaving home."

tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

I heard "Karma Police" a LOT on the radio. For some reason, I got the feeling that a large chunk of the station's listeners were into Radiohead, and were latching on to the one song off OK Computer that was actually getting play. I like "Karma Police" and all, but it's not what I want to hear on the radio.

Vinnie, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

ok what is it with songs from 5-10 years ago suddenly coming back to haunt me: http://www.accessatlanta.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/accessatlanta/radiotalk/entries/2007/07/10/78_most_spun_ou.html

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

"Together Again" and "The Way" hold up pretty well.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ROCKISTS

Tape Store, Thursday, 12 July 2007 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not so surprised that I was the only one to vote for "Anytime", but only one vote for "All My Life"?

The Reverend, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

"barbie girl">>>>>>"mmmbop" :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Jordan Sargent, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:17 (eighteen years ago)

No, that's not true at all, and I don't even like "Mmmbop".

The Reverend, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:21 (eighteen years ago)

(Actually, now that I think of it, I haven't heard "Mmmbop" since it was a hit, so judgment reserved on that one.)

The Reverend, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:22 (eighteen years ago)

also, thoughts on whether "barbie girl" is just freaky/nasty or a disguised feminist joint?

Jordan Sargent, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:28 (eighteen years ago)

the only way I would ever be happy with this poll is if all the options received 0 votes

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:32 (eighteen years ago)

It's funny how almost every post in the thread is about how one is definitely not going to vote for "Karma Police" and then, most of us (well, I mentioned it upthread) just vote silently for "Karma Police" anyway ;)

Geir Hongro, Friday, 13 July 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

Lene's solo debut single was hardly very feminist at least.

those were other people, you see

gabbneb, Friday, 13 July 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

I can't even remember what my vote was for, but I don't think it was Karma Police. Probably the Spice Girls.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 July 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)
