"hey. we're in a band. we don't really like anything much - except maybe sitting in diners - but we're not that menacing either" has been the standard band photo for far too long.

The thing I don't get is how normalcy isn't idiocy. If the whole point of these photos is to make your band look interesting, then how is it not idiotic to take a bland photo of yourselves wearing gap pants in a park?

filthy dylan, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

But I'm not sure that is the whole point of these photos.

This is actually a really fascinating thread because it puts much of the indie ethos on display, namely, that forever unresolvable conflict between art and commerce. Most indie bands aim to shake off as many markings of commerce as possible and thus probably don't even want to be in a photo much less labor to make it interesting. After all, these are publicity photos. For some, even putting themselves on display at a live show can be uncomfortable.

But this is what people who like indie like about indie, gap pants in a park/café/basement and all.

those tortoise pics are really cool. and I didn't know it was tortoise until I went "dang who is this cool band" and checked the URL, so it's not like my pro-tortoise bias is coming into play here.

Gosh, I sure hope that's the name of the band because I was silly enough to wonder too.

boring band pics should be blamed on the photographer / publicity people, no?
