A young, brash, sloppy Ian McKaye or a Older, more laid back "sophisticated" (*cough*) Ian McKaye?
Which do you Prefer?

Lord Custos II, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

they're both overrated, souless, bland groups. the minor threat guys became druggies at least. fugazi's "cred" is just annoying.

chaki, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Fugazi's CRED is just annoying..."

actually, putting down people trying to make a difference by judging them is annoying...

Gage-o, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but you asked us to judge them!!

mark s, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh shit. now i'm confused. Someone get Lyle Preslar to thread...

Gage-o, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

every article i read pertaining to fugazi talks less about their music and more about their "cred." it gets tiring afer a while especially when they're not really doing anything! they keep their shows and their cd's cheap? so does ipecac! who cares? its like ladytron always talking about their hair and clothes. also fugazi just screams "bland" to me. from their wallpaper like music to their album covers to their clothes. everything is just boring. ian mckaye cant sing and his guitar playing is worse than neil young.

chaki, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

also, i really havent seen fugazi make a "difference" in the music buisness whatsoever. at leat not in my eyes. what? so they're a self contained entity selling their own records and t-shirts? can anyone say gratefuldead?!

chaki, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

could we have a moratorium on the following subjects: fugazi, shakira, idm, aphex twin, neo-garage...

jess, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

only if you stop hyping awk.

chaki, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Minor threat: if only because you can get all of their stuff in on CD.

Also, I think if Webern were alive he would've loved them.

Julio Desouza, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

On one CD, that's what I wanted to say.

Julio Desouza, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Minor Threat. Fugazi is ultra-boring, musically and otherwise.

Kris, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ian mckaye cant sing and his guitar playing is worse than neil young.

chaki attacks! when criticism goes grouchy...

not that i'm a fugazi fan or anything but some of my favorite vocalists are often accused of "can't sing"

secondly, there are far worse guitarists than ian mackaye or neil young. ian's playing is very unconventional and influential (for one: his use of octave 1sts inspired many bands in the late 80s/early 90s) and neil young is a better guitarist than any of his critics, there's no point in defending his style.

chaki attacks! when criticism goes grouchy...
not grouchy, just honest. ian mckaye's playing sounds like shit to these ears.
secondly, there are far worse guitarists than ian mackaye
see this is all people can come up with to defend him.
ian's playing is very unconventional and influential
i cant name a great band that has been influenced by him. and by unconventional you mean "doesnt know how to play, so he just makes noise" then yes, i agree.
(for one: his use of octave 1sts inspired many bands in the late 80s/early 90s)
big whoop. "dude jerry changed the way the guitar was played! he had missing fingers." fugazi fans = deadheads.

chaki, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

see this is all people can come up with to defend him.

i'm not a huge fan like i said, but say the playing in the first 30 seconds of "suggestion"...? i mean, how familiar are you with his work? or is this just a blanket, black/white, good/bad argument?

i cant name a great band that has been influenced by him.

Drive Like Jehu's first album is pretty great and wears some Fugazi influence: "Spikes To You" in particular.

and by unconventional you mean "doesnt know how to play, so he just makes noise" then yes, i agree.

Honestly, you're coming off like a Guitar Center gearhead. But you're probably not, so I'll set aside the conventional wisdom that's permeating through this "noise = bad" theme.

big whoop.

octave chord = big whoop? pretty bold words from someone who attends smashing pumpkins/foo fighters/strokes shows...

..

-@-.com, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and i walked out of them all!

chaki, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chaki, you do sound pretty reactionary here -- there are about a thousand less-competent, more-universally-praised guitarists than MacKaye. Is it or is it not the case that you feel, when you're dealing with Fugazi, like you're being told that if you're apathetic about some issues then you're a coward, and you dislike being told that? Is you is or is you ain't a person who avoids politics in music unless the music in question admits to the "complexities" of issues-at-hand, i.e. says nothing definitively in favor of or in opposition to a proposition but sits on a rhetorical fence, taking the aesthetic high ground?

Anyhow the answer to the Fgzi vs Mnr Thrt question is Fgzi. Melodies better, singing better, songs better, guitars inestimably better - genius skree-skree of "Bed for the Scraping" on Red Medicine makes the case best.

John Darnielle, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fgz, surely.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Fugazi's treatment and recording of guitar feedback and perhaps precisely why Chaki's so completely bored/unimpressed by Ian MacKaye's guitar playing is that perhaps Ian approaches the guitar very naively (enfant terrible), encouraging feedback, kling/klang muted scraping, unbridled un-playing (his guitar contribution to Sonic Youth's "100%")... I think he's more akin to the guitar school of thought that David Fair, Jandek or even Matmos may subscribe to.

Minor Threat vs. Fugazi - Fugazi. Minor Threat : Pink Flag :: Fugazi : Chairs Missing, 154, etc.

http://gygax.pitas.com, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

he tells me I am a political coward = he plays brilliant guitar

mark s, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

could we have a moratorium on the following subjects: fugazi, shakira, idm, aphex twin, neo-garage...

jess - When did you become ILM's resident grouch?

bnw, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

For me, Minor Threat wins, hands down. The tunes are simply better. Less concerned with breaking ground, more concerned with the urgency. More fun, less po-faced.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i agree with alex. chaki is so right about fugazi fans. i like way ting rhum + that funky one where he's a wifey - but that's it - that video iz shit too

a-33, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jess - When did you become ILM's resident grouch?

feb. 21st, 2002.

(anyway, it's not grouchyness, it's holy war. cf. "recently on ILM" thread on ILE.)

annnnyway, just so i don't look like i'm doing nothing but whining: minor threat is intensely important to a certain kind of 16-17 yr old (coughcough) because a. the music bespeaks a certain type of suburban frustration in the face of jocks/goons/retards/"the man" and b. it's music made by 19 yr olds, made completely (written, recorded, manufactured [more or less].) when it comes to something i'd rather listen to NOW, i'd choose fugazi hands down, although i do listen to them very rarely these days. ("red medecine" blah blah classic...bits of the older records all stand up - "waiting room" or "repeater" close as the int'l pop underground ever came to having actual anthems...okay, and maybe "suck my left one" - "end hits" a huge, huge disappointment. haven't heard the new one enough to comment.)

jess, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

have just relistend to MT - yep - they're shit too

a-33, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fugazi - hands up. (What is UP with that saying "hands DOWN" it sounds so... pervy.) I don't like the production on the Minor Threat records. heh.

nathalie, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chaki, you do sound pretty reactionary here

becasue i list reasons why i dont like a band? Is it or is it not the case that you feel, when you're dealing with Fugazi, like you're being told that if you're apathetic about some issues then you're a coward, and you dislike being told that?

it is not the case. in fact i dont think iver ever paid attention enough to form a political opinion about fgz.

Is you is or is you ain't a person who avoids politics in music unless the music in question admits to the "complexities" of issues- at-hand, i.e. says nothing definitively in favor of or in opposition to a proposition but sits on a rhetorical fence, taking the aesthetic high ground?

what the FUCK are you trying to say? that is such a vague statement. i listen to all sorts of things. some things political some things not. some things militant some things neutral. who gives a shit? i just watched Prince play guitar for 6 hours and watched him call Abe Lincoln a racist in front of thousands of people. Fugazi aint shit.

chaki, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

by the way i know thats comparing apples with oranges but i had to throw in that i just watched prince play for 6 hours!!!

chaki, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You can't let *that* pass by without a full description of the concert. SHARE!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think if you guys sat down and talked to any one of the members of Fugazi about all of this blah blah, you might have to bite your tongue, for at least an hour or so.

Golly jeepers people, they're just people doing what they love, and trying to stand for what they believe.

Irony loves the fact that the new album is called THE ARGUMENT.

Gage-o, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"I just watched prince play for 6 hours!!!"

My condolences.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what the FUCK are you trying to say? That the prevailing consensus around ILM (certainly on this thread) seems to be politically grounded=sucks ass. Seems fair to say that three consecutive responses to the same question was a li'l reactionary. Didn't mean to piss you off, sorry

John Darnielle, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, I think if Webern were alive he would've loved them.

Phew, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks about this every time they're trying to decide if they like something!`

Clarke B., Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

politically grounded=plays "non-bland" guitar??

mark s, Sunday, 21 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

''Phew, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks about this every time they're trying to decide if they like something!`''

hey, Clarke, we think alike, don't we?

Julio Desouza, Sunday, 21 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

seven years pass...
