actually, putting down people trying to make a difference by judging them is annoying...

Also, I think if Webern were alive he would've loved them.

chaki attacks! when criticism goes grouchy...
not that i'm a fugazi fan or anything but some of my favorite vocalists are often accused of "can't sing"
secondly, there are far worse guitarists than ian mackaye or neil young. ian's playing is very unconventional and influential (for one: his use of octave 1sts inspired many bands in the late 80s/early 90s) and neil young is a better guitarist than any of his critics, there's no point in defending his style.

i'm not a huge fan like i said, but say the playing in the first 30 seconds of "suggestion"...? i mean, how familiar are you with his work? or is this just a blanket, black/white, good/bad argument?
i cant name a great band that has been influenced by him.
Drive Like Jehu's first album is pretty great and wears some Fugazi influence: "Spikes To You" in particular.
and by unconventional you mean "doesnt know how to play, so he just makes noise" then yes, i agree.
Honestly, you're coming off like a Guitar Center gearhead. But you're probably not, so I'll set aside the conventional wisdom that's permeating through this "noise = bad" theme.
big whoop.
octave chord = big whoop? pretty bold words from someone who attends smashing pumpkins/foo fighters/strokes shows...

Anyhow the answer to the Fgzi vs Mnr Thrt question is Fgzi. Melodies better, singing better, songs better, guitars inestimably better - genius skree-skree of "Bed for the Scraping" on Red Medicine makes the case best.

I think Fugazi's treatment and recording of guitar feedback and perhaps precisely why Chaki's so completely bored/unimpressed by Ian MacKaye's guitar playing is that perhaps Ian approaches the guitar very naively (enfant terrible), encouraging feedback, kling/klang muted scraping, unbridled un-playing (his guitar contribution to Sonic Youth's "100%")... I think he's more akin to the guitar school of thought that David Fair, Jandek or even Matmos may subscribe to.
Minor Threat vs. Fugazi - Fugazi. Minor Threat : Pink Flag :: Fugazi : Chairs Missing, 154, etc.

feb. 21st, 2002.
(anyway, it's not grouchyness, it's holy war. cf. "recently on ILM" thread on ILE.)
annnnyway, just so i don't look like i'm doing nothing but whining: minor threat is intensely important to a certain kind of 16-17 yr old (coughcough) because a. the music bespeaks a certain type of suburban frustration in the face of jocks/goons/retards/"the man" and b. it's music made by 19 yr olds, made completely (written, recorded, manufactured [more or less].) when it comes to something i'd rather listen to NOW, i'd choose fugazi hands down, although i do listen to them very rarely these days. ("red medecine" blah blah classic...bits of the older records all stand up - "waiting room" or "repeater" close as the int'l pop underground ever came to having actual anthems...okay, and maybe "suck my left one" - "end hits" a huge, huge disappointment. haven't heard the new one enough to comment.)

Golly jeepers people, they're just people doing what they love, and trying to stand for what they believe.
Irony loves the fact that the new album is called THE ARGUMENT.
