Although almost every song is excellent, "Golden Lady" and "Don't You Worry Bout a Thing" are outstanding for me. I chose "Golden Lady."

Living For The City

but it's a pretty impossible poll, I don't even know why I voted that

bakerstreetsaxsolo, Thursday, 12 July 2007 01:37 (eighteen years ago)

"Don't You Worry Bout a Thing."

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 12 July 2007 02:20 (eighteen years ago)

yeah (but Too High in 2nd place)

Dominique, Thursday, 12 July 2007 03:21 (eighteen years ago)

Too High!

ryan, Thursday, 12 July 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)

Fuck. This is cruel. I've narrowed it down to, like, three, but I'll need to come back to this.

The Reverend, Thursday, 12 July 2007 04:36 (eighteen years ago)

"Too High" I guess...

This album is really overrated and sort of boring, though. I find Stevie's music in general to be really cheesy.

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 12 July 2007 04:46 (eighteen years ago)

No one forced you to answer in this thread.

Eric H., Thursday, 12 July 2007 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

Just for that, I might do a Hotter Than July poll.

Eric H., Thursday, 12 July 2007 05:12 (eighteen years ago)

I would somewhat agree with this album being overrated, and I am a pretty big Wonder fan. To me Don't You Worry About A Thing stands far above any other song on the album.

ablaeser, Thursday, 12 July 2007 05:13 (eighteen years ago)

I still think it's his "best" album, but I'll admit I like and listen to some of the others more.

Eric H., Thursday, 12 July 2007 05:17 (eighteen years ago)

I'm suspicious of anyone who doesn't think this is his best album. Talking book--no. I'm going to pick the melodramatic All in Love is Fair just for that jazzy minor key run up and down the keyboard at the end, although the midpoint where that segues into the jaunty start Don't You Worry Bout a Thing is actually my favourite bit.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, Thursday, 12 July 2007 08:07 (eighteen years ago)

Haha, well I'm suspicious of you! I rate it no higher than #3, behind "Talking Book" and "Key Of Life" (which I've owned since I was 9.)

I'm going with "He's Misstra Know-it-all"

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 12 July 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

I'mma with Misstra 'swell.

t**t, Thursday, 12 July 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

and me

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Thursday, 12 July 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

Livin' in the City. It's also great for karaoke.

Beep, Thursday, 12 July 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

I think this is probably his best album (but I somehow have never bought Songs in the Key of Life, not that I've never heard it, but it's been a long time since I've heard the whole thing).

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 13 July 2007 01:11 (eighteen years ago)

I love love love the interplay of guitars in "Visions", it is a total trip. The bass is stellar, too.

m bison, Friday, 13 July 2007 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

I went "All in Love is Fair" but it was a crapshoot.

Saxby D. Elder, Friday, 13 July 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

After further research, I have picked "Higher Ground" for rocking out like a motherfucker.

The Reverend, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:05 (eighteen years ago)

"Golden Lady". Personally I see "Innervisions" as the weakest of his 1972-76 albums though.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 13 July 2007 07:05 (eighteen years ago)

Thing. Could almost as easily have been "Golden Lady," tho. Almost. I've owned three or four copies of this one over the years, as well as the "Don't You Worry" 45.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Friday, 13 July 2007 09:17 (eighteen years ago)

I could probably convince myself to vote for anything on here except "Too High" and "Living for the City", but I went with "All in Love is Fair".

o. nate, Friday, 13 July 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

Personally I see "Innervisions" as the weakest of his 1972-76 albums though.

It's too hard to rank these four. I'd say they're all classic.

o. nate, Friday, 13 July 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

misstra for me.

I'm suspicious of anyone who doesn't think this is his best album. Talking book--no.

that would be my favourite, easily...

stevie, Friday, 13 July 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

i... agree with geir!

gff, Friday, 13 July 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's his best, Songs In The Key could be but there are a few clangers (as there usually are on doubles). But my actual favourite is Music Of My Mind because 'Happier Than The Morning Sun', followed by 'Superwoman' is just absolutely incredible

bakerstreetsaxsolo, Friday, 13 July 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

"Songs In The Key Of Life" would have been his best without the worst tracks. On the other hand, it's a "White Album" case in that people don't neccessarily agree which ones are the worst tracks.

For me it's a close call between "Songs In The Key.." and "Fulfillingness..." with "Talking Book" rather close behind them.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 13 July 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

At this point, I'd probably rank Songs as the weakest, oddly enough. But even that has "Summer Soft," which is probably his best song evah.

Somewhere along the way Fulfillingness became my co-favorite with Hotter Than July.

Eric H., Friday, 13 July 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

The worst on Songs, imo, are "Joy Inside My Tears," "Love's In Need Of Love Today" and probably "Easy Goin' Evening."

Eric H., Friday, 13 July 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

... but mostly the first one.

Eric H., Friday, 13 July 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

Innervisions seems the proggiest of the 70s albums, tho, so I can't see why you'd rate it as the worst Geir.

Eric H., Friday, 13 July 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

Songs is even better when you include the bonus EP with "All Day Sucker" - it is a lot to digest in one sitting though.

o. nate, Friday, 13 July 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

"Sitting"? Wuddya mean sitting? Geir dances like mad when listening to melodious music!
...Er, right?

t**t, Friday, 13 July 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

"Joy Inside My Tears" and "Love's In Need Of Love Today" are marvellous. Among his best ever!

Geir Hongro, Friday, 13 July 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

And I don't like one single song on the bonus EP.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 13 July 2007 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

"Innervisions seems the proggiest of the 70s albums, tho, so I can't see why you'd rate it as the worst Geir."

To me it's first and foremost the funkiest, and it has the least ballads. I prefer his ballads to the faster stuff.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 13 July 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

golden lady and don't you worry are amazing, but i'll plump for misstra due to its current poignant topicality.

Frogman Henry, Friday, 13 July 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Friday, 13 July 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Saturday, 14 July 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

I missed this one... Quite disappointed to see that my favourite song is the only one to get zero votes!

Keith, Saturday, 14 July 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

YES! I won

GIRUY "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing"!

ps i love Jose Feliciano's 'Golden Lady'

bakerstreetsaxsolo, Sunday, 15 July 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

how did all in love is fair get ranked so low?

titchyschneiderMk2, Sunday, 15 July 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

it's kind of...ott. and yeh that's the point but it does fit with the cool/mellow/righteous funk vibe of the rest of the lp.

Frogman Henry, Sunday, 15 July 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

it doesn't fit...

Frogman Henry, Sunday, 15 July 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

so for an album that has tracks that are cool, mellow, and righteous, a track thats a bit dramatic (but lyrically, still righteous) cant fit? weird.

titchyschneiderMk2, Sunday, 15 July 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

hey its just an opinion. i find its melodrama out of place on this record. seems like a precursor to songs in the key.

Frogman Henry, Sunday, 15 July 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

whats melodramatic on songs in the key? anyway, stevie was doing melodrama (although i wouldnt put the melo in there cos the drama is very intense IMO) on talking book - songs like you and i, etc. i really adore his intensely dramatic ballads... (just my opinion of course so...)

titchyschneiderMk2, Sunday, 15 July 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

i also voted for city, but "jesus children" deserved at least ONE vote...

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 15 July 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, well all the songs on this album deserve at least one vote.

Eric H., Monday, 16 July 2007 00:44 (eighteen years ago)

If ever a song proved "stevie ballad" =/= good, that song would be "Joy Inside My Tears."

Eric H., Monday, 16 July 2007 00:45 (eighteen years ago)

whats melodramatic on songs in the key?

"Joy Inside My Tears" is an excellent example. May be the best song on the entire double.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 16 July 2007 07:57 (eighteen years ago)

joy inside my tears is a brilliant song. not the best on there though. that might be another star.

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 16 July 2007 08:25 (eighteen years ago)

Do you guys like Zamboni Muzak or something?

Eric H., Monday, 16 July 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

The only thing I like about that song is how the bassline sounds like it's trying to wrench itself free from the song about 10 seconds in.

Eric H., Monday, 16 July 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

Higher Ground

Kenny, Monday, 16 July 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

I can't believe Geir doesn't like "Ebony Eyes"! That always sounded like a classic Tin Pan Allen melody to me.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 16 July 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

WTF? Tin Pan ALLEY!

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 16 July 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

Didn't Tin Pan Allen give Pamela Anderson her start as a Tool Time Girl?

B.L.A.M., Monday, 16 July 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

I can't believe Geir, of all people, doesn't like "Saturn."

Eric H., Monday, 16 July 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

"Zamboni Muzak" = name of my new prog-crunk band.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

seven years pass...

'visions' would be good on a mix w/ sth from 'meat puppets ii'

The most incorrect things I've ever posted on ILM, right there.

Eric H., Friday, 3 April 2015 20:06 (ten years ago)

Glad you came around eventually.

Bees and the Law (Tom D.), Friday, 3 April 2015 20:41 (ten years ago)

Seeing him perform it live (and tear the house down) helped me see the light.

Eric H., Friday, 3 April 2015 20:49 (ten years ago)

Would have voted for Jesus Child of America.

I think Misstra Know It All is my favorite but the way Living for the City fades in with that Fender Rhodes (that's what it is right?) is so badass, maybe my favorite moment in his entire discog

frogbs, Friday, 17 May 2024 21:17 (one year ago)

Yes! The way that the plaintive acoustic guitar notes of get quickly subsumed by that primordial heaviness is form and function in perfect sync

Rich E. (Eric H.), Friday, 17 May 2024 21:36 (one year ago)

notes of "Visions" get quickly subsumed, that is

Rich E. (Eric H.), Friday, 17 May 2024 21:37 (one year ago)

I thought you hated guitars.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 17 May 2024 21:43 (one year ago)

I like that they get subsumed!

VISIONS

brimstead, Friday, 17 May 2024 22:00 (one year ago)

This is somehow a contender for greatest album ever and also not even my favorite Stevie.
