Each of the featured albums comes from a different decade, each artist from a different corner of Australia, and all broke new ground for Australian music both domestically and internationally.
Each episode of Great Australian Albums features never-before-seen live footage, interviews, photographs and artwork.

What, not "Frogstomp"?
― King Boy Pato, Thursday, 12 July 2007 05:42 (eighteen years ago)
i hope they show the house where the (i'm) stranded clip was shot, it still exists!
― haitch, Thursday, 12 July 2007 06:03 (eighteen years ago)
15 year old girls might see the silverchair release as a masterpiece. as for the rest of us...
― Charlie Howard, Thursday, 12 July 2007 06:16 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, Silverchair, obvs just filler because Robert Foster wouldn't have had the inclination to do it.
― Drooone, Thursday, 12 July 2007 06:20 (eighteen years ago)
Is there a decent p2p site for Aussie television akin to UKNova.
I've been on a massive Triffids kick the past couple of days and I'd love to see that doc.
― Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 12 July 2007 06:37 (eighteen years ago)
..I mean Forster.
― Drooone, Thursday, 12 July 2007 06:50 (eighteen years ago)
Surely they could have spun thirty minutes of Lindy "former Federal Senate candidate for the Australian Democrats - remember that party?" Morrison going off about how only students and wanky journalists listened to the G-B's.
Not that I would watch *that* or anything.
― King Boy Pato, Thursday, 12 July 2007 08:57 (eighteen years ago)
For some reason that escapes me, I wasted an hour of my life watching the Silverchair episode. Yep, Daniel Jones whinging and bitching like he shit himself on stage and had cancer and whatever. Fuck that.
The Crowded House ep was much much better and more interesting than I thought it would be - mostly down to Tim Finn being his affable self at the mixing desk.
Looking forward to The Triffids next week...
― King Boy Pato, Sunday, 5 August 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)
Er, I mean Neil.
Not Tim.
Tim was there but being his kinda arsehole self.
― King Boy Pato, Sunday, 5 August 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)
definitely the two less interesting records out of the way already. the crowdies one did hold my attention though, which mildly surprised me as i've never cared about them that much. neil finn was good, yes. how awful was the 'four seasons in one day' clip, though!
wonder if the triffids one touches on dave mccomb's journal (relevant bits of which were reprinted in a book that came with the born sandy reissue), cos that thing's a goldmine for finding out how that record was meant to sound.
― haitch, Sunday, 5 August 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)
i didn't bother w/ the silverchair one.
No Loved Ones?
― I know, right?, Sunday, 5 August 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)
the silverchair one was bizarre. it seemed to be trying to fabricate some premise that the 'diaroma' record was untouchable, existing in an exclusive network of elite records by 'special' artists. from that show's appraisal, you'd think overwhelming good opinion of the record was unanimous or something
― Charlie Howard, Sunday, 5 August 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)
or at least taken for granted
― Charlie Howard, Sunday, 5 August 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)
"Woodface" is great. But I'm puzzled there is no "Back In Black". Must be the most famous album from Oz ever.
― Geir Hongro, Monday, 6 August 2007 01:11 (eighteen years ago)
Haven't watched it yet, but will def watch the Triffids one.
OTM re Loved Ones.
― Drooone, Monday, 6 August 2007 01:14 (eighteen years ago)
Anyone here know the Swingers? I think they were really great. I just bought a CD of them.
― Bimble, Monday, 6 August 2007 01:39 (eighteen years ago)
Geir OTM too. That is very odd!
― moley, Monday, 6 August 2007 02:36 (eighteen years ago)
The Swingers were a NZ band. Definitely Bones Hillman's best band.
― SeekAltRoute, Monday, 6 August 2007 03:21 (eighteen years ago)
The chair episode was great, the Crowded House one not so good. But, it's the material they're working with I guess.
The Triffids one next week though should be phenomenal.
― SeekAltRoute, Monday, 6 August 2007 03:23 (eighteen years ago)
Of course, there are so many Aust albums that could've been in that series... what about Saturday Night Fever for example?
― moley, Monday, 6 August 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)
Perhaps 'A Night On Disco Mountain' blights that as a contender, I don't know.
― moley, Monday, 6 August 2007 04:53 (eighteen years ago)
Back In Black not recorded in Australia, its "story" centered on extra-Austral locations too: death of Bon, importation of Geordie singer.
― energy flash gordon, Monday, 6 August 2007 09:51 (eighteen years ago)
Thoughts on the Triffids episode?
I enjoyed. The keyboardist chick and the dude from the Church scared me a little bit though. But the drummer, I thought, seemed a really nice, gentle, positive guy.
Could have done without Kingsmill's prattling too.
Cool bunch of dudes. http://www.theage.com.au/ffximage/2006/06/15/triffids_2_wideweb__470x347,0.jpg
― W4LTER, Monday, 13 August 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)
yeah that was an excellent episode, though ppl overseas will probably "wtf" at some of the interview choices.
steve kilbey came across like one of his blog posts.
dave mccomb was really hott back in the day, i had no idea!!
― haitch, Monday, 13 August 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)
Great episode, although it didn't really offer much that a die-hard fan wouldn't already know I guess.
Jill Birt (the "keyboardist chick" :) ) came across really well I thought, as did Alsy and Evil. Robert kinda looked like he was going to burst into tears a couple of times though, which was a bit uncomfortable to watch.
And yeah, Kingsmill doesn't really bring much to the table. Not enough Amanda Brown for mine either...
― SeekAltRoute, Monday, 13 August 2007 04:08 (eighteen years ago)
I should really try to avoid using 'really' in every...
― SeekAltRoute, Monday, 13 August 2007 04:09 (eighteen years ago)
"Jill Birt" was indeed interesting, but I just thought she came across kind of crepey..
― W4LTER, Monday, 13 August 2007 04:12 (eighteen years ago)
I didn't think Jill Birt was being creepy at all. However, I almost kicked the telly in after three seconds of that cunt, Kingsmill.
"Seabirds" has been playing non-stop in my head all day today.
― King Boy Pato, Monday, 13 August 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, Kingsmill. Dude's a BIG WANKER.
How's how he was saying "I don't mean to sound pretentious, but..."
― W4LTER, Monday, 13 August 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)
Exactly which corner of Australia are Crowded House from?
― S-, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 04:23 (eighteen years ago)
2/3rds of them were from melbourne!
― haitch, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 04:41 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, two out of three members were Australian, band was formed in Australia, band based in Melbourne, management based in Sydney, business registered in Australia = there's no reasonable argument that can be made for them being from any other country!
― energy flash gordon, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 10:52 (eighteen years ago)
... except that their frontman/songwriter hails from elsewhere?
― Zelda Zonk, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 10:56 (eighteen years ago)
So that makes the entire band as an entity from elsewhere?
― energy flash gordon, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 14:03 (eighteen years ago)
No, it makes the most important person in the band an entity from elsewhere.
― Zelda Zonk, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)
Er, so you're discounting your own argument?
― energy flash gordon, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)
SAINTS NEXT WEEK
― W4LTER, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)
..I think that's what the ad said
― W4LTER, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)
Since they've shown the other three, it seems just a little bit likely.
And the date's at the top of the thread.
― energy flash gordon, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 10:17 (eighteen years ago)
i'm not gonna make a point of being home at 8:30pm on a saturday. but if that's where i have the misfortune of being...
― Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 10:30 (eighteen years ago)
"well all RIGHT!!"
― Mark G, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 10:38 (eighteen years ago)
I have made plans to go on Saturday night.
I don't buy into The Saints myth, kthxbye.
― King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 11:44 (eighteen years ago)
Enjoying the Saints one then? I am. How fierce is Kuepper's live gtr sound from that old live footage?
― moley, Saturday, 18 August 2007 10:48 (eighteen years ago)
In the add break, Sliverchair. Incongruous - what are they doing in this series? They don't belong, they're not in the same league.
― moley, Saturday, 18 August 2007 10:49 (eighteen years ago)
Hmmm, now that they're interviewing Nick Cave - why isn't Junkyard, say, in this series? Perhaps in series two? Wouldn't mind seeing Foetus's 'Hole' in that one too. Huh, that'll be the day.
― moley, Saturday, 18 August 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)
shit, i missed this and it's the only one that i really wanted to see!
junkyard would be a great one for a second series. what would some other possibles, say with the same time spread (one for each decade - '70s/80s/90s/00s)?
― haitch, Saturday, 18 August 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)
Given the way this one went, it'd be High Voltage, Junkyard, 16 Lovers Lane and whatever Grinspoon album had some strings on it.
― energy flash gordon, Sunday, 19 August 2007 05:14 (eighteen years ago)
Yes, haha!
― moley, Sunday, 19 August 2007 06:17 (eighteen years ago)
hahahaha
― haitch, Sunday, 19 August 2007 13:16 (eighteen years ago)
lolz
― Charlie Howard, Sunday, 19 August 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)
Second series coming to SBS soon after the Olympics. The albums being profiled are...
HUMAN FRAILTY Hunters and Collectors
16 LOVERS LANE The Go-Betweens
MURDER BALLADS Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
ODYSSEY NUMBER FIVE Powderfinger
Obviously very interested in the 16 Lovers Lane episode. Rather less interested in the others.

is this

― CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:08 (seventeen years ago)
"MURDER BALLADS Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds"
I'm speechless. Their most pretentious album ever (and Nick Cave knows a thing or two about pretensiousness).
― Marco Damiani, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:10 (seventeen years ago)
(xp) If the Australians don't want to claim that one, can Scotland have it?
― Tom D., Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:10 (seventeen years ago)
absolutely not.
― haitch, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:19 (seventeen years ago)
Oh, I don't mind giving away Nick Cave.
― King Boy Pato, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:24 (seventeen years ago)
We'll even throw in Jet too.
no-one wants jet, don't be stupid.
― haitch, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:27 (seventeen years ago)
'kick' would be much worthier than powderfinger. pato do you think time is ripe for an inxs critcal rehabilitation or what
― haitch, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:28 (seventeen years ago)
i sort of assumed most aussie rock fans would have written off hutchence as a faggot the moment inxs "got the funk".
― CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)
Wow, before I clicked on this thread, I was snarkily thinking "ha, yeah, like they'd do an episode on the Saints or SPK"
And I was half right, holy shit!
I do demand an SPK Information Overload Unit episode. If they do this, I will be officially looking to emigrate to Australia.
― Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 16:04 (seventeen years ago)
Wasn't Midnight Oil's 10,9,8... insanely huge down there? Seems like that'd be one of the first they'd do an episode on.
― Sara Sara Sara, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 17:08 (seventeen years ago)
I would have guess 10,9,8... also. Hell, Cold Chisel didn't even make the list.

Human Frailty isn't even close to being the best Hunters and Collectors album. And I'd prefer any Birthday Party album over Nick Cave, but there you go. SPK won't be there, nor Jim Foetus, nor The Angels, and yeah, where is Highway to Hell and Kick? Or X or Rose Tattoo or Severed Heads (Since the Accident)? The Divinyls?
And you'll never see Tumbleweed, Cosmic Psychos or feedtime or any of those excellent grungebucket bands beloved by Sup Pop either, cos people here haven't even heard of them. What's the point of bellyaching.
I think this all comes back in some tangential way to Everett True's beef with the Australian music press (and, by extension, the way that the Australian media judges Australian music):

― haitch, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 00:54 (seventeen years ago)
This material will be covered in documentaries eventually, I'm sure, but probably twenty or thirty years' hence.
― moley, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 01:04 (seventeen years ago)
Everett True is a big part of the reason why Melody Maker no longer exists. Obv.
― SeekAltRoute, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 02:18 (seventeen years ago)
Melody Maker no longer exists?!
― Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 02:20 (seventeen years ago)
A Cosmic Psychos episode (Go The Hack!) would be the single greatest thing on Australian TV. Ever.
― SeekAltRoute, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 02:23 (seventeen years ago)
they should do one of these for WASTE SAUSAGE
― electricsound, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 02:24 (seventeen years ago)

Murder Ballads is the one with the Kylie song on it right? So probably their best selling album & not a particularly suprising choice.
― badg, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 04:17 (seventeen years ago)
yeah silverchair and powderfinger albums both probably sold well and are both lame though
― wilter, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 04:19 (seventeen years ago)

― electricsound, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 04:20 (seventeen years ago)

― Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 05:52 (seventeen years ago)
if you did it would have to be for the first drop city album (as i don't think the chiaroscuro ep would be allowed)
― electricsound, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 05:56 (seventeen years ago)
If it were a sales-based contest (how typically Australian, though, to equate sales with quality), Saturday Night Fever, Kick and Back In Black would be up there, with no complaints from me!
― moley, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 06:14 (seventeen years ago)
If it was just a sales thing, what about Kylie? Fever IS quality!
But over-privileging sales would be typically Australian. I guess it's more like "big sellers from rock bands which produced Spokesmen and Elder Statesmen. Every vocalist in all the groups profiled still has a relatively high media presence (or is dead, and only recently so).
